I don't suggest BUYING the record or anything, but try and catch Duran Duran with mel-e mel on MTV. A rather catchy driving number, but not enough of the old school guys, too much lipstick pouting. Why isn't anyone begging those old school guys to make tracks? I want to hear Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five rhyming over Drexciya. this totally pisses me off....if (as i've heard) the song that DD cover is 'white lines' then they can fuck off -- here's the Furious Five rallying against the thing that is hurting their communities - and the Duran covering a song that is against *everything they stood for* in the eighties - mainly greed and abuse of cocaine and wealth. Duran Duran *suck* for this move. Hypocrites. ObIDM: Found at tower outlet yesterday for a measly $4 - 'Blueprint' by WildPlanet on Warp. Nice, somewhat hard, kinda experimental techno - there's some great stuff here, all dancefloor based (some nice acid stuff here)...haven't listened to it all yet but when i do...i'll let ya know. :) mikebee ps - kent - this is in no way meant as a flame to you. :)

Two points and an obIDM: (1) Duran Duran didn't stand for anything in the eighties. They were a pop music band. They still are. Their output is fluff. (I happen to like them, but I like pop-music-fluff sometimes.) (2) Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel readily admit to having been cocaine addicts when they wrote and recorded this song originally. Hypocrites? ObIDM: Thanks to all who recommended the St. Etienne single to me. I disagree with this - pop fluff, yes, but they were of a group of bands who epitomize eighties excess.

I suppose it depends what you mean by "eighties excess". To me, their early work epitomizes the post-Roxy/post-Ultavox "New Romantic" pop movement. And the music videos they appeared in were unsurpassed at the time, helped define what pop music video is (for better or worse), and still stand as excellent examples. What they stood for is pop, art, pop-art, art-pop, and fashion. Unfortunately they haven't fulfilled the promise that _Rio_ made. I would not be at all surprised to find out that they were into the Sugarhill thing when it first happened. I'll buy the covers album (_Thank You_, due in April I believe). Any which way, I'm sure their motivation was to give due respect to the various originators. Frankly, they're not big enough anymore to be self-important hypocrites, so they must be doing it out of the love of the music.

I really hate to carry this on for too much longer...But I was (and suppose still am) a pretty big DD fan, and I can accept this, if I keep imagining this scenerio in my mind: Simon and the Taylors drinking too much and listening to Japan, and saying things like "If David Sylvian was a little more dancefloor and not so musicly highbrow...This band could control America!" Thus... A high concept was forged...and it was just a shame I couldn't discover the innovators before... Doubt it. I see it as the last gasp of a bunch of losers who can't write they're own stuff anymore. A stroke of marketing genius to put these has-beens on the charts once more. "WHite Lines" is a classic song that crossed over usual musical borders. Virtually everyone liked (likes) this song when it was out. Creatively, these guys are done... Peace. Actually I plan on buying it when it comes out domestic - that cover is in my opinion pretty incredible, and I can't wait to hear them also do "911 is a Joke" or "Watching the Detectives". Is this IDM? Uh, no, sorry about that, but this will hopefully be inspiration enough for other bands to start doing more covers, including IDM bands. A wishlist of sorts: band: cover: FSOL Star Spangled Banner (as covered by Jimi Hendrix) Autechre Planet Rock Richard Kirk The Banana Boat song Okay, I'll quit wasting bandwidth.... Brian

needless to say I was SHOCKED when I saw this video a few night ago. White Lines (the song they are redoing) was one of my all time faves back in jr. high when old school rap was my thing. I am not saying I hate the cover (tho i mostly do), it just surprised the hell out of me to see Duran Duran shaking there booties to it on Mtv.

I asked Slick Rick to be on one of my tracks, but he is in the pen. I learned that on Mtv as well. Actually they've probably already covered it and you missed it. Makes me want to dig out my copy of Woodstock and do it myself. The actual subtitle is "Don't Don't Do It" - the possible irony of the double-negative not being lost on at least a few people at the time. C. -- cspot@hyperreal.com (Chris.Hilker) ...electro-spiritual in composition...
