I think you mean Automanikk (sp?), which came out in 88 or 89. "Hot Lemonade" was a subsequent single I believe. "Voodoo Ray" came before the LP and is indeed a defining track in the history of house/techno - one of the first (if not _the_ first) UK tracks which really sounded right IMO, and one which stands the test of time, hence its inclusion on the excellent "Flux Trax" comp, for instance. When I say "sounded right", what I mean is: at the time a lot of UK "house" had a really dull juddery feel to it - lacking the flow of the US stuff from (principally) Chicago and Detroit. Either that or samplathons with blatant Todd Terry rip-off beats. Voodoo Ray took what sounded to me at the time to be primarily Detroit influences in the main track and twisted that round to sound completely unique. Gerald was a member of the original line-up of 808 state, and co-wrote "Pacific State", which they released after his departure. I saw him play live in Lancaster UK when I was at university, in 89 I think, and he played a storming version of that track in his set. I once passed over a copy of his "28 gun bad boy" LP, on vinyl no less. Very rare I believe. But the shop wouln't let me hear it and I was feeling less than flush at the time. Anyone know this record?
