One of my dj friends will buy records that i don't really care for sometimes. When I asked him if he really likes it (out of curiosity), he usually says "it's tightly produced". Which really didn't answer my question. Just because something is tightly produced doesn't make it good.

I always thought Cevin Key was the man, not Trent.

I agree there is some thought in Boy Bands, it's how can we make a shitload of money.

Call it what it means to you. Everytime someone says they don't like something somebody has to say "that's your opinion not the truth", no shit...there are few "universal truths" discussed on this list. Some people will like some artists, some won't...we don't need to remind the people that it is their opinion...I'm sure they know that. Discuss and argue, just stop pointing out the OBVIOUS. EVERYONE can tell the difference between opinions and fact.

Who cares?

Sure, if you can't say something is good or bad, then how can you really talk about anything. I doubt that whatever expression or feeling you attach to it will be universally felt and agreed upon. You could argue about it forever. That's why I always say talk about what it means to you, and not worry about it.

I think there is a fair number of people that don't consider electronic music as music. I have heard some people say that some idm is random for the sake of it, I can agree on that for some things.
quoted 4 lines For many, music is entertainment...or meaning (i.e.> For many, music is entertainment...or meaning (i.e. > lyrics)...or politics...or escape...or sex. It's not > always about your brain going "cool, that sounds > neat."
That seems certainly evident at many raves and clubs I have been to. Party music typically isn't very deep.
quoted 2 lines It's an unfair oversimplification to say that IDM is> It's an unfair oversimplification to say that IDM is > cool and most other music is shit.
I never heard anyone say that. I think most people should listen to a wide range of music. When the whole laptop mouse clicking discussion was going on, it was sort of funny how some people reacted. Some people painted the worst scenario of seeing a rock show, and then compared that to seeing someone click a laptop. I was thinking to myself why are these people trying to be so elitist and act like there are absolutely no good non-electronic artists out there worth seeing. There are good and bad things in every genre. Mouse clicking happens to be one of the bad things for me, that's not a performance.

Just because you like and dislike stuff doesn't mean you are "being cool and unique" at someone else's expense. I don't think one should surpress their opinions or ideas, and worry about what others think. Why join a sea of blandness, and not have your own opinion about anything?

Don't worry about what other people think, express yourself. Who cares if someone does or doesn't like what you like. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? well, i haven't been on this list too long (this time around), and i have one question. why is everybody trying so hard to be right? why don't we all just settle down, now, kids. it's ok. some people like NIN, some don't. some people think he's a good producer, some dont. some people like fuckin NSYNC. some don't. it's gotten to the point where everybody's arguing about arguing, and arguing about that as well. how about somebody starts a new thread? ok... i'll shoot. jimi tenor: making money off of nostalgic cheese or actually has a point? american raves: will we ever pick up some IDM or even downtempo at our parties? other interests: i'd like to know what other styles of music you all listen to. me? deep house, dark techno, downtempo, hiphop (not the glam shit... mostly darker stuff), jazz, classical, post emo fusion shoegazer improv rock whatever you call it stuff. hexstatic: pretty good. makes me want to hear new coldcut and that's it, though. any other opinions? any visual artists on this list? let's share some URL's and stuff. alright. that's my two orange lincolns. let's have yours? a. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I pretty much avoid everything with a four-on-the-floor beat, but music I adore includes but is not limited to: classical - particularly from the romantic and impressionistic periods blues and some rock'n'roll 60s and 70s rock (Beatles, Sabbath, ELP, Donovan, Eagles...) 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s pop (Dusty Springfield, Diana Ross, Aguilera, Queen...) 90s rock (Radiohead, Weezer, Greenday, Living End, Ben & Jason...) funk (Earth Wind & Fire, Prince, Larry Graham...) metal (Gwar, Korn, Pantera, most artists on Roadrunner and associated labels) hiphop (Funkdoobiest, Cypress, Tribe Called Quest, Dre, Anticon, Beasties...) crooners (Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, Frankie Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Sinatra) jazz (Armstrong, Fitzgerald, Monk, Gershwin...) ballad-types (Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, Spiritualized...) drum'n'bass (jazzy, funky, dark and hard, jump-up, intelligent) downtempo (portishead, howie b...) reggae, dub and dancehall some IDM mongrel cross-breeds of these types of music make me very happy indeed =) my three favourite things in music are: funk influence dissonant chords smooth melodies that don't match the chords but sound great anyway hope that was interesting for y'all.

On Friday night at the Xen thing, their performance was breathtaking, especially the visuals. For me, the music left quite a lot to be desired for the most part, but had occasional moments of greatness. The bit with the vocal samples really rang my bell. My housemate went out and bought their album first thing on Saturday afternoon so I expect I'll be hearing a fair bit in the near future.
