... Just received Sly & Robbie's "Drum & Bass (Strip to the Bone by Howie B), on Rykodisc/Palm Pictures (1999), and was curious if anyone could provide some background information on this project. The title is sort of misleading, there really isn't a great amount of drum & bass on this superb full length, but rather laid back trip-hop, with dub melodies and the occasional spurt of reggae rhythm's slipped in the background. I understand there was a radio/only promo in circulation in December '98, perhaps that was just a 12" single? I'm not sure... Any input would be great. Thanks in advance... Pietro. _______________________________ Pietro Da Sacco, mbm@netcore.ca The Circular Cosmic Spot http://www.sdriver.com/spot

Pietro: it's a teamup between sly dunbar, robbie shakespeare (cats from the old skool still doin' it) and howie b (nu skooler); drum n bass owes a lot to dub and sly and robbie are masters; it's their interpretation of drum n bass; there was a 3 track promo vinyl ep sent out a month or so back. the album is out in feb. IDM: for those interested in checking some of this out in RA, there's a bit in the Feb 99 Electronics RealAudio chart here: http://www.globalserve.net/~cognition (along with a review) and it's also up for grabs in the auction. The term "drum & bass" was used first in dub-reggae. Since they helped invent it they thought they would recapture the term. There have been 90's d&b remixes of Sly & Robbie, but that's not what this new disc is about. Howie B's dubbing and processing is quite cool and gritty. I recommend this disc and the DVD single with the manga video. CT

I have the promo on cd and it is full length. I believe that the title refers not to the style of music known as D-n-B, but rather the *guts* of the genre of music Sly and Robbie play (and the instruments they use - they're both session men), Reggae-dub.(in many cases anyway) jeff `Pietro wrote:
