I just opened todays LA Times and was shocked to see this staring at me. Something weird is going on: Top techno bands The Orb, Orbital, Chemical Brothers, and Meat Beat Manifesto are among those set for a two day festival at Big Bear June 21-22, presented by rave producer Chaotica. How do you like that? Jason Bentley hinted on the radio last night that Underworld would be coming to LA along with other major acts in the third week of June, so I think we can expect to see them added to the bill. Big Bear, for all those not familiar with LA, is in the Mountains east of Orange County and is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from my house. Lots of nice pines and many ski areas. From the sounds of it so far, this is probably going to be the biggest event LA has ever had. Even the largest raves we've had here have never had this kind of talent together. Well I know what I'm doing that weekend... /""'' /"'RESH Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA

(Meat Beat, "top Techno band"? Hmmn (-: ) Actually, if you read the SoCal-Raves Calendar, this wouldn't have surprised you so much: Friday, June 21 - Saturday, June 22. ? - by Kingfish? 3 day event. Live performances by top UK acts (probably some Brothers and a few spherical things ;). In the San Bernardino Mountains. More TBA. (http://socal-raves.org/calendar/events.htm)

Actually, Big Bear is just a piece of Vermont that was transplanted onto the top of a 9000 ft. flat plateau, so the natives wouldn't know they'd been moved. (-: It's about 90 miles inland from downtown Los Angeles, and it's a beautiful place. Something our non-US readers might not know is that at the right times of year, it's actually possible to drive down to the beach, get a sunburn in the morning, leave the beach by Noon, drive a couple of hours, and go skiing for the rest of the afternoon. I've actually done this ...

Well, that's kinda debatable. Personally Plantasia (Mixmaster Morris, Young American Primitive, Carl Craig, Adam X DJ'ing) was a highlight, and of course the aborted Vaporspace/Aphex/Orbital/Moby event that almost happened, and for sheer "biggest" I doubt it would exceed Millennium (14,000) or K-Rave (17,000). Personally though I think they should call it "Tribal Gathering" and ship everyone else who was supposed to play at TG over here and say it's the makeup event (-: - Greg (Who would personally rather be at Sonar the week before than see The Orb/Orbital/Meat Beat/Chemical Brothers, since I've seen 'em all)

Word on the street is that Orbital is going to be touring the entire USA about that time. I don't know who is going with them (yet). Myself and several friends will most likely make the trip for the show in LA, if indeed that is who is billed. Please forward all ticket info as soon as it is known. We ought to have an IDM pow-wow.

Well size is another question entirely. If 14,000 people show up in downtown LA to see Dee-lite and Aphex, why not just as much if not more to see the Orb AND Orbital AND Underworld AND the Chemical Brothers? Even in Big Bear. As for talent, much respect to Mixmaster Morris but I hardly think Moby and Young American Primitive (at Plantasia) can hold a candle the line up for this event so far. And a million Dj's couldn't duplicate the experience of hearing Halcyon live. But as Circa and Narnia go to show, if it sounds too good to be true in LA, it probably is, if you know what I mean... /""'' /"'RESH Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA

OK, OK! I plan to be there. So where in Big Bear is this concert, oops, I mean rave, going to be? I'm thinking: 1. Snow Summit 2. Bear Mountain 3. The convention center next to the airport 4. That place that used to be a drive in theater 5. The senior citizen center 6. Butler Peak Fire Lookout Station (hehehe!) 7. The place that I haven't thought of and that's where it will be held. Now then, all I need to do is talk Peter into letting me borrow his cabin... Oh yeah, if you're from overseas and you'd like to come over for the festivities, I'd be happy to host you (how about it Sash, Helen, Nick, Mick and Toby?). Woo hoo! I can't seem to wipe this silly grin off of my face... Renee _______________________________________________________________________________ Subject: (idm) Oh my...Something in LA....
