All I can say is THANK GOD Autechre is playing at the Trubador and not some monster rave. Who the hell wants to go to all the hassle of waiting through countless DJ's playing stupid floor pumpin' techno until 2 am when Autechre would probably finally get a chance to play. IDM is much better suited to smaller venues (i.e. The Orb's show at American Legion Hall) than some huge rave full of X-ed up 16 year old pacifier suckers. -Fresh ========================================================================= Fullerton College claims no responsibility to the opinion expressed above (This is an automatic stamp from our Email system and not from the user.) =========================================================================

exactly. yeah, the perfect example not to have the tour at a "rave" in l.a. would be the aphex/orbital/moby disaster a few years ago. i also remember watching cybersonik a few years ago and was amazed to find a mosh pit and then seeing someone get the shit kicked out of him. i'd rather go to the troubador myself, although i feel sorry for autechere, stc, etc... who have to deal w/ the door staff/bouncers, etc... i remember the people at the spiritualized show were getting into the springheel jack set inbetween bands. at least it isn't at some piece of shit like the hollywood grand. david *+* on now:this heat

ROTFL!!! Were you even *there*? The people who were inside that saw the decorations and heard the soundchecks were the most disappointed of all, because they said the space was awesome, the decorations were great and that it was gonna completely go off!!! (Paging Dana Watanabe to the blue courtesy IDM phone) Just because Art "Buttwipe" Parent pissed off with the money and conveniently forgot to take care of some of the details (thus leading to the shutdown), does that mean it was "the perfect example [of how] not to have [a] tour"??? The 2 greatest (IMHO) Techno performances I've witnessed in the past 5 years - Aphex Twin outside on Aug. 14th 1992, & Carl Craig on New Year's Eve '94/'95 - were both part of big rave events, with many many people there. I can't think of a *better* setting. Putting them in a little dingy rock club where people just stand there and tap their toes is nuts. Conventional Venues Suck. (As does wanting to keep it in some little place so only the oh-so-smart IDM cognoscente know about it. Phuque THAT. X'ing pacifier-suckers are people too.) - Greg

Lucky for you. Toronto is unfortunately sticking to rave format with a large company called "Transcendance" bringing a whole crew. The nice thing is that they snagged Mixmaster Morris....and raves don't usually have time limits (concert halls closing at 2am?) but I expect around 2000+ ravers to be at the Autechre show, and maybe 600 left by 2am. -------------------------------------------------------------- gas bar and dental supplies has been completely reconstructed! new items include more interviews, more reviews, and plenty of art, graphic and trash. yes, actually, i was there. i interviewed all 4 acts (i forgot vaporspace earlier) and was inside the place for several hours before it started. i heard the soundchecks, or at least aphex's and can only remember wishing i was not interviewing moby anymore and out there watching mr. james especially since i had just smoked him out right before then. at one point aphex was making all these loud shrieks of noise that sounded like the place was being bombed and moby just had the most pissed-off expression on his face. to get back to this thread though... i wasbn't surprised it was shut down. the whole backstage area looked like a fire hazard waiting to happen. it was a maze of little hallways and rooms w/ pvc for walls. there was also only one entrance/exit that was planning on being used as far as i can remember which could have been pretty dangerous had there been a fire.

i'm not saying it can't happen. i know this tour went off in s.f. and am still kicking myself for not venturing up there instead which i originally had planned. the orb show a few years ago seemed to be pretty successful as botha hsow and a "party" at the same time.

i think whoever booked this show could have found a better venue than the troub., but i honestly don't think either of these acts would really appeal to the typical x'ing pacifier-sucker. i think a place like luna park would have been a better choice. laika played an incredible show there and people responded and grooved and DANCED. granted they aren't totally IDM, but hey did use keyboards, sequences. david *+* on now: UI-sharpie ep (their next album is gonna hit HARD)

Absolutely. Circa '93 would've been incredible (and I would have had it on DAT =) ), and I daresay I would have enjoyed Orbital more in that setting than I did when I saw them in LA in '92, which was more of a traditional concert type event. At least I got to trade my Circa '93 T-shirt to Paul Hartnoll for an Orbital shirt... ObIDM: There's this LP called Visit Venus on Yo Mama! records from Germany that's the best jazzy ambient dub/space funk I've heard lately - check it out. Also worth checking is the 4 Hero remix of "I've Seen Rivers" by Courtney Pine. Yes, mom - I finally found a jungle track I liked enough to buy.
