Huh?! Sorry, but you seriously need to listen to some Miles Davis. Especially anything from his 1965-68 quintet (E.S.P., Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti). Any of this should transcend all of your prejudices against the trumpet. Miles' beautiful tone on these cd's is definitely not "cloying and nasal" as you put it.
