1.-whatever happenned to that alleged Plaid 5.1 surround dvd? Wasn't that supposed to come out last year? 2.Richard Devine supposedly has a 5.1 album in the works, that should be a good one, too. 3. that Glen Velez remix comp that has been in the works... 4.Radio Boy? Whatever happenned to that one? 5. New Boards Of Canada, they should be about due, I guess. 6. Tipper needs to release what he was playing out at Burning Man, that shit is unreal. 7. Two Lone Swordmen the band need to break up, and Two Lone Swordmen the beatmakers need to do more of what they do best. It was probably a pretty fun thing for them to do, nice experiment, but yeah it kinda sucks, I'm over it. 8. King George needs to be overthrown, or just given Texas and the south. That should really be top on my list, but this is a music list. Say okay, you guys won the civil war (sorry everyone in Florida) and call it even. They can grow tobacco and wage meaningless wars on defensless countries and the west can grow legal ganja finally, make the I-5 corridor into a supa mass transit energy efficient transport route, and make friends again with the rest of the world. 9. Aphex needs to stop putting paperclips in his piano and calling it music, or making 200 bpm jungle gabber whatever and release something interesting and evocative. someone mentioned The new Telefon Tel Aviv bieng good except the vocals, which I totally agree with. Same goes for Funkstorungs' new one too. Oh and I forgot to mention Wevie Stonder "Kenyan Harry" ep. Which is both "band" music and has vocals, both of which I was kinda dissing on earlier. Maybe it's that this is stupid and wierd, rather than whiney and dry. Thats why I like that Mike and Rich album still and don't really listen to any of thier other stuff anymore. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? yeah, aphex twin is mostly riding off what he used to be. his last cd sucked. "i care because you do" sucked except for one or two tracks. Until he met Tom Jenkinson his music was really loopy and not very good. After he met Tom he couldn't make a song for more than 3 minutes for he wasn't capable of making a 7 minute drum solo. His music is very good and very innovative (if you call ripping of Squarepusher innovative) but he just doesn't have it in him anymore. ugh, what was polygon window? cutups <cutup@andythepooh.com> wrote:

I just can't agree with that. RDJ Album was classic. ICBYD was classic. Come to Daddy was great stuff. Hello? SAW II? Polygon Window? You didn't like that stuff? Really? Wow. I have never thought of Aphex as ripping off Sqpr. I mean, the thought had never even occurred to me. Musically, they've always seemed like completely different entities to me. But hey, you know. My favorites of the Aphex stuff is for sure the Selected Ambient Works 85-92 era stuff, the Didgeridoos and whatnots..... while most of the DnB stuff is a real let down, the trax with video accompaniment worked from a comical standpoint. But i consider the early things Pure Aphex. And he's by no means a ripoff of Jenkinson.... Aphex is way better. Just don't care for a lot of the newer stuff from him....especially the ickily recent Smojphace rmix crap. np: Aphex Twin--"didgeridoo" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

To start one of this usually long and meaningless discussions about aphex (or sometimes it is ae/boc) that appear now and then I will add my 2 cent: I think most of aphex twin stuff is kind of dull, but then he manage to make good track (as imho alberto balsam, nannou, tha, if it really me, on, iz-us and so on) he makes some of the most beautiful stuff I know and all of them are on my list of the best songs ever. And that why I always check out every new Aphex release... After he met Tom he couldn't make a song for more than 3 minutes for he wasn't capable of making a 7 minute drum solo. His music is very good and very innovative (if you call ripping of Squarepusher innovative) but he just doesn't have it in him anymore.

Surely it's up to Aphex what he wants to release. You don't have to like it. I don't like Britney Spears, but I'm not going to waste my time writing useless threads about her. If you don't like it, you don't like it. Maybe if people could add something constructive to their argument, it wouldn't seem so lame. You want interesting and evocative, culturally subjective by definition, go do it yourself. I bet it's a joke, besides, Aphex is way more techno oriented than Jenkins, who has a big drum'n'bass/jungle influence in his music (like Venetian Snares), Aphex makes jungle-like tunes when it comes to tempo and drum rythmes, but I'd never call em trully jungle, while some dnb DJ's date to mix Squarepusher stuff into their sets but saying on rips the other off... I dunno, lets call it influence :) -- "progress doesn't come from early risers progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things" http://n3wjack.blogspot.com http://www.jungletrain.net - 24/7 dnb radio station --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Many artists produce innovative stuff, and then don't anymore... Innovation only lasts the moment you are innovating. Just because you innovated a few years ago doesn't mean you are still innovative, its a continual thing. The (musical) world would be a sad-sad place if this were set in stone. Know thy history, but keep eyes onto the future... Of course, music is music, is communication, is feeling, is connecting. So in that sense, music doesn't need to be innovative to be good, it just needs to be good. ;) best rgd, -- s. http://www.ArcTone.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Innovation == experimentation that works. Most experiments fail. Sometimes not until after the fact, do you realize they failed. The difference between innovations and failed experiments is determined after the fact when, strictly speaking, they're old news. An innovation can be a new technique or strategy that bears exploration. Said explorations aren't innovations. As listeners, you can A) seek out and listen to only the innovations, or B) Listen to music that makes you feel good regardless of the source. Aphex Twin is (still) occasionally brilliant, but is perhaps too willing to put out underproduced, demo-quality tracks, for his own reasons. Largely I think because he's been put in a position where the money he gets for his music is independent of the music's quality. He's just a bloke from Cornwall that was extraordinarily lucky that his talents, haphazardly applied, have allowed him to avoid actual work his entire adult life. I'd be interested to hear what he comes up with if he starts really caring, and manages to devote sustained effort to making the best music he can imagine. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Good points, I would add though that innovation is expermentation that works because it is *musical*. A lot of people experiment with something but then fail to transfor what starts as an interesting technique/technical idea into a new medium for expression. I think you can tell while you are "expermineting" what is musical and what is not - IF - you are able to be objective and musical to begin with.

Right, well both are interesting. And B) music can often be driving future innovation much as a good album pushes a genre in a direction as other's join the "sound" and copy it... even if it is not innovative.

Agree with all these comments. Oddly enough I also said this exact same comment to someone just a few weeks ago. Richard has the talent to do something incredible, but often I feel like the music isn't taken seriously enough. It's a shame. At least, this is the image he projects to me. Perhaps he is strongly commited, and I just don't get that image from his image - as it were. -- s. http://www.ArcTone.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yeah, i've noticed that everyone i work with is always trying to record things in different ways and it always just ends up sounding like bad micro-sound. Like the other day i was using a mic-preamp thats supposed to be used on vocals for a drum because it doesn't pick up much sound from a source that is far away so i kind of had this gated drum going, after listening to it I decided it just sounded like a basement punk band with a copy of Acid. Oh, I wouldn't say you missed it, Bob. And I even bought the T-shirt, just because I would've seen SQPSHR live 6 or 7 releases ago. I think we were originally talking about (sad, strange) people who don't like SAW I, ...ICBYD or RDJ. So it's more that [the style of music discussed by the] IDM [list] has evolved far enough from its origins that people can like the new stuff without liking the originals. Which is fair enough, of course, but still quite interesting to note. But David, this is exactly what I mean. Many artist have produced albums I simply adored several years ago. But now a days, even though I listen to things from all different people, often I find the most interesting music coming from completly different names - and not the headline players, or previously inovating artists. Autechre, Orb, Orbital, Aphex, Prfuse, BOC, Bola, Speedy J... [and countless others] all these people have left a huge impression on me, but its been year(s) since many of these artists have done something new again that has stunned me as it did back then. Often just because the style stagnates, if nothing else. Only once in a while does an artist make something truely amazing and then come back years later with something equally amazing again... several great albums in a row [and then disapearing or loosing the vibe] are more common than returns [sadly but true, though it needn't be true, and isn't always true] those rare musical moments when you can channel something creative AND connect with large amounts of people are rare momments indeed - and most of the time harder to achieve in the light of success than in darkness... simply because it is harder to be the light, in the light, than in the darkness... s. -- s. http://www.ArcTone.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
