aphex twin SAW and autechre incunabula. very attractive young lady played them for me. I was hooked when I care because you do came out though. albums that really sat me on my head were the blech cassette and blechsdottir cd (thanks pj!). previously from a background of industrial, punk, metal, goth, noise and a wee bit of hip hop. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Ditto on on this one. I remember loving NIN's 'Further Down the Spiral', which had several songs remixed by RDJ. I bought 'I Care Because You Do' shortly thereafter because it was the only Aphex Twin I could ever find in local stores. This was circa 1995? Hooked in a major way ever since. --- michal urbanski <michal@antiflux.org> wrote:

I was 14 or so and had signed up for what I believe was a BMG thing. Don't worry, I only bought CD's when they were "buy 1 get 2 free" :) Anyway, in one of the wonderful catalogs, they had a little blurb for Aphex Twin's "selected ambient works 2" and I thought "hey, that sounds interesting." It was a 2xcd, so I put it down for 2 slots. And they sent me 2 of them :) Apparently they didn't listen to much aphex twin... Anyway, so I listened to it and didn't like it. But I came back to it about 2 years later and was intrigued more. When I found out that other Aphex Twin songs had percussion, I was very intrigued. So I picked up "I care because you do" and the rest is history. Recent history, but oh well. derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- kills germs on contact --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hard to say since there's really no *hard* definition of IDM. I remember first hearing something i recognized is electronic music/techno when i was in 9th grade and tuned into the college radio show that dieselboy had...he played uk breakbeat hardcore back then. As far as IDM...its hard to say...because i listened to things that some people consider IDM for a while, but never with alot of interest. I always avoided it because it seemed like a really full of itself/overly academic genere. I first really started looking into "IDM" artists after picking up the the takeshi muto 12" on schematic from massive records a couple years ago. - cutups ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard" <arkive@btopenworld.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, September 16, 2002 4:57 PM Subject: [idm] Your first time... holy crap, you were in 7th grade in 1995? i feel very very old :) hmm, it's very hard for me to figure out when i heard idm first, but i blame my friend jon who played bola and autechre to me less than 4 years ago, when we were stoned and playing our favorite musics for each other. he has the most amazing stereo, and when i heard all the gorgeous detail (rather than muffled or distorted), i was amazed i hadn't been all over this sooner. -rachel (aka dj pie) -- <underscore> You are in a dark twisty maze of connotations, all alike. piesarenice.net funkier than you. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hmmm... this is quite tricky since it depends on how broad your view of what IDM is... is. My music taste first went left when I bought copies of The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld double LP and Orbital's green album on the same day... Then I moved into ambient music for quite some time... Biosphere's 'Patashnik' being a particular favourite... I suppose the very first solidly IDM record I ever bought was my gorgeous bronze vinyl copy of Black Dog Productions 'Bytes'. I can remember sitting up in amazement listening to all those wonderful electronic oddities through a haze of vinyl surface noise and being totally entranced... ('Bytes' doesn't sound the same on CD - which I bought much later. I have to listen to it with surface noise... the experience is completely different.) The Artificial Intelligence series quickly became a staple. And ever since then I couldn't stop buying IDM... )Jq. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

My first time (short answer): Squarepusher - Big Loda [US version] My first time (long answer): My friend from the floor below me in my college dorm gave me the disc; I went up to my room, put it in my headphones, laid down on the bed and pushed play. The opening loop of Come On My Selector: "okay...nothing new"; about five seconds into it "What the fuck?!" Listened to it the entire way through without so much as moving and as soon as it was finished I pushed play again and ran it through. I listened to it three times like that, which is rare. I often rewind interesting parts of tracks, even if its only three seconds, to really appreciate how something was put together. [everyone I drive around with hates me for it] This entire album was a giant "interesting part". Now there seems to be a few questions: "what is idm? IDM is relative...." No! Perhaps it is, but this was absolutely the turning point of my music life. A new era. Up until then I knew Orbital; this wasn't Orbital. Damn, was this not Orbital! Nin?? HA! Though his Nothing label did put out some quality music here in the United States. From there, Aphex Twin [Would you believe I'd never even heard of him?] from Aphex Twin -> Mu-Ziq -> Bogdan Raczynski -> Rephlex/Planet-Mu in general -> ...the idm list, so not only can I learn but I can also piss people off with these long, meaningless stories. ov. my very fist would have to be aphex twin's on on mtv, but i don't count that, since it didn't get me into the thing... my first therefore was autechre's amber. we were out in the countryside camping and listened to it on a top notch car audio at full volume. i was so stoned that i didn't notice anything around me but the music. i went to buy chiastic slide two days later, and am in love with that particular album since. It must have been "A huge evergrowing..." by the Orb back in 1990 or 1991. That together with what Andrew Weatherall was doing. Man, it seemed strange but still impossible to stay away from. Just loved it from the beginning although I probably didn't know I was just gonna descend more and more into the world of interesting noises. Before that it was only house and techno which I still enjoy but not in the ballpark of how much I love the music of Plaid, Ae, BoC and the likes of them. I'm in the process of unloading all of my vinyl and recently ebayed the 2x12" for Texturology. I was surprised that there seemed very little demand for it because it is an *excellent* release. I got turned onto it by 'che' (I want to see a vh1 'where are they now' show for old time idm folk) although can honestly say I don't recall there ever being a lot of talk about any of the releases on the idm list. Of course, the majority of the material was released 93-94, which is right about when I *really* started paying attention. i remember visiting nyc when i was in late highschool (from way upstate ny) and i was at the virgin megastore and there was a listening station with SpringHeelJack and RDJ on the headphones and if i had bought the SpringHeelJack, well, i probably wouldn't be listening to so much electronic music today. (two days later i was taking acid in a sunshine filled room and trying to to dance)... Lunatic Harness was very key for me as well and is still one of my favorite albums of all time. i was one of those desperate kids who bough Prodigy (which i still secretly love) and Chem Brothers and all that shit (imo), ... i felt there was something very special that could happen, but with rollingstone and mtvspringbreak as my musical guides it was not so easy to find this stuff (internet was not yet popular) np: doo-wop on live365 ... represent!

i was in high school in 94 and a coil fan, having had them introduced to me by a friend's brother, and the only record store in town that had any coil had it on the wall behind the cash register. also on the wall were things like aphex twin, FSOL, the orb, orbital, zoviet:france, einsturzende neubauten, wagon christ, autechre... lots of weird and good music which i soon started buying. also, i heard a lot of tapes of toronto djs through the aforementioned friend, and there used to be a lot of what's now lumped together as idm being spun... the Orb's Blue Room on a hardcore tape, Ventolin on some breaks tape... yeah... and then i saw The Black Dog & PWOG and I became addicted to this stuff... -- JA --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The first time is foggy because I was but a wee raver and my head was clouded with extacy and architecture school...the earliest memorable moment though was seeing and hearing Autechre live in 1994, in NYC, playing music from Amber. It was at Club Vinyl, where Blech was later held. The Vinyl sound system was so amazing, and Amber is an articulate album; it defines and describes spatiality in several different relationships. It's an unparalleled release. hmm, i guess that would probably be The Orb in '91. they played 'little fluffy clouds' and 'perpetual dawn' on the radio around here, and despite my steadfast desire to "hate techno," i started to get into it. if you count Pop Will Eat Itself then it would have been more like '90. but my defining plunge into the electronic world came in early '95 in Mod Lang in Berkeley. i went in there and they were playing this weird, angular, fast music that made geometric shapes fold and unfold in my head. holy shit! i asked them what it was and they told me it was Source Direct. i started buying drum n' bass. then someone played Squarepusher for me, and suddenly a whole new world of listening to expensive imported records was open before me... :) j --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

That was the ones! i been thinking about this thread for awhile, and i was thinking about first electronic 12" which was LFO - LFO, but yeah, the year leading up to that, some new friends me and my buddy were hanging out with had taken us away in their rangerover up into all these weird and wonderful little scottish back roads, introduced us to bongs and mushrooms [not together, tho we never ruled that out] and listening to ambient music. I recently been listening to Chill Out again, its so amazing, and brings back all those memories of originally hearing it, so vividly. <reminisces... reconsiders...> Actually in saying that, i wouldn't actually consider KLF or the ORb as IDM. In fact i had never heard the term IDM until about 97 or so, and thought it was pretty dumb term, but i guess when something is appropriated for so long it takes on its own meaning. I'll stick with my original LFO answer, as it seems more appropriate. -thor

:: I don't know if this has been done before, but do :: people remember their 'first time' listening to IDM? Good topic.. My bro mentioned to me back in 1990 or so to look into this band called "Meat Beat Manifesto".. soon after grabbing 'Radio Babylon/Helter Skelter' i was hooked. Next in the line-up were releases by Baby Ford, Acid Horse, PTP, PWEI, 808 State, Fusion (aka Plastikman), Cabaret Voltaire, and the string keeps tangling from thereon. During this whole time, we'd both head thru the border into Detroit to a record store called 'Record Time' to sift through all the (now classic) 12"s by labels and artists such as Probe, +8, Model 500, No UFO's, Messiah, FSOL, WaxTrax, Soiree, Orb, LOGM, Alkahest, more MBM, UR, Front 242, Altern8, AI Vol.1 (early Warp inc/ Ae), (Detroit radio inc/ Chuck Horn Show), Brave New Waves (Montreal), Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Depeche Mode, NiN, Post Contemporary, Fred Giannelli, DHS.. and several others.. --those were the days.. With all that out of the way, it's always interesting to see the path that these artists and labels have carved for today.. come to think of it, it's refreshing to go back to some of these releases to re-listen and to appreciate the sheer magnitude and influence they've had on our ears over the years.. I lost my IDM virginity by buying Autechre's Tri Repetae at Rasputin's in Berkeley in 1997. Didn't like it at first either. What really got me hooked was the Envane EP, I Care Because You Do, and early Muziq like Tango'n'Vectif (the latter was introduced to me by a coworker who also introduced to me Mod Lang Records in Berkeley and the idea of buying imports... blast!). -Mark --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

PORTER RICKS = Biokinecs CD on Chain Reaction Records. I bought it because one of my all time favorite sound artists is Thomas Koner and I heard he was half of Porter Ricks. I picked this CD first out of the few that were available at the store I was at, mainly because of it's metal case. I would say the sound that came from my spaeakers when I got home changed my life forever. The way Slayer's "Reign In Blood" changed my life when I was 10. A co-worker at Best Buy told me the first Enigma album (MCMXC a.d.) was good "thrusting" music, and by god, he was right. I could not stop listening to the album. This was in early 1996. I kept searching for music that sounded like that album -- roughly dance music with cool, atmospheric melodies. But I struck out with shit like Deep Forest. Later, in January 1997, I was at a local record shop, and they were playing "I Care Because You Do." I thought, "Hmm, this sort of sounds like Enigma [which I know now it really doesn't]; maybe this is what I've been looking for!" So I bought it a few days later. After that, I got into The Orb (mainly a mistake) and of course Ae, BoC, etc. So it was basically the luck of hearing Aphex in a record shop. Needless to say, I feel fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time. forcasa __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! My first time (as I mentioned before) was Aphex Twin's Didgeridoo, cause me and my mate were well into Techno, like the Detroit stuff, etc.. He turns up at my house one day and say's 'You have GOT to hear this. I reckon it's well up your street!' After hearing, we taped it and setup the tape deck to play back double speed (those old 2speed dubbing decks) and laughed ourselves silly. It seems most of us have come accross IDM (in a broad sense) by complete chance. What would be the best track out of your collection? Mine has to be Autechre's Clipper off Tri Repetae. It was 'accessible', sounded different, and had a really nice tune.... Yeah I'm not the oldest on the list :) I've been trying to think of what I first bought for a while and your post reminded me. I thought of the time when a friend sold me Kraftwerks "Electric Cafe" coz he didn't like it. It was the first CD played on my first portable CD player (size of a house brick). But that wasn't it. I thought of the time that a co-worker got me into Tangerine Dream coz the company we where working for was dupin there back catalogue. Concert in Poland, Optical Race (alas the last TD album worth listening to IMO) and all the old 70's stuff is amazing. But that wasn't it. But your post fired a long dormant neuron. It was the Shamen. My bestest m8 said "I've got free tickets to go see this band called The Shamen, I've heard they are great. You wanna go?". Was in Oxford, at the co-op hall. And it was fucking amazing. I absolutely lost it and haven't looked back since. Which all led on to the trips to london for some MegaDogs and seeing Nitzer Ebb and Front 242. Oh my the memories come flooding back :) The Orb doing Little Fluffy clouds at sunset at Glastonbury..... Thanks Paul for reminding me of something amazing that I'll try not to forget for a while. steve ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Chillage" <paulchillage@hotmail.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 7:57 PM Subject: RE: [idm] Your first time...

I am an Aquarius. Maybe you don't put much faith in Astrology. Neither do I. But one thing it gets right is the characterization of Aquarians as fixated on the future. Electronic music has always been the music of the future to me. My best friend and I got into electronic music through our search for great sounding music to which to sit and listen (both sober and otherwise). Pink Floyd was the beginning. Then "Tubular Bells II" (laugh if you like). At that time (the early 90s), 808 State was getting some radio play in Toronto, but I didn't go for the aggressive stylings of Cubik and that other track off "EX:EL". However, a good review for "Gorgeous" in Q magazine made that album my first IDM purchase ("Gorgeous" is a hit-and-miss affair, IMHOP). Heard "UFOrb" on CFNY's "The Alternative Bedtime Hour with Danni Elwell". She played the album through. It scared me, so I turned it off part way through. The music stayed with me though, and it wasn't long before I picked up that album. Those huge, deep sighs that open the album...they should comprise a 10-minute track in themselves! Then: Artificial Intelligence, the "See the Light" tour, Orbital...and oh yes Resistance-fucking-D. By the way IDM means this to me: Around the time of the birth of this list, dance music was getting a lot of airplay; Snap, KLF, Technotronic. With these groups and their ilk defining, for most, the genre known as dance music, announcing "I listen to dance music," was, in most circles, tantamount to declaring "I am an idiot." Saying one listened to *intelligent* dance music was a way of describing the music relative to the most similar music genre with which the person to whom one was describing the music was likely to be familiar. Like this: "I listen to dance music, uh, INTELLIGENT dance music." I never bought the idea that the music discussed on this list was necessarily "intelligent", it just wasn't that *other* stupid shit.
