Sorry to break it to you, but this pose was getting tired in 1992.
My review:
The event was fun *because* it wasn't just IDMsters who attended. We showed up before it opened, and at first it was just the usual-looking crowd. They all stood behind us with their arms crossed being uniformly boring and undershowered and white and male which are the four traits defining all idm shows. They also seemed to be having some competition where the further you stood in the back and the more your arms were crossed, the cooler you were. I guess that seems to be the popular sport at most of these soulseek user conventions.
But then actual people arrived and filled up the front and started dancing (!). By the time Prefuse 73 came on, the upstairs room was inching towards a subdued rave in vibe and quantity of people dancing around the speakers. The amount of fun being generated came overwhelmingly from people who were clearly not the usual scenesters, although I did notice a few Reaktor users getting a little groove on. I had to go before Richard Devine came on, but I left with hope in my heart for future events where non-generic-rave-music gets played live and people actually react and have fun. Fun! If fun is against the law of IDM, then call me an outlaw. If anyone out there likes to have/make fun at IDM shows rather than trying to project that IDM vibe that says "a little more DeBord, a little less rave," we should all meet up at a show and make a concerted effort to CONQUER.
Let's compare it to a more typical IDM event like the last Autechre show. Oh yeah, remember how boring most of the crowd was? Remember how pointless it was standing there amidst a hundred guys with dark green shoulder bags while Autechre hit "play" on their Nord and sat there smoking weed and talking to some friend of theirs? Remember how everyone in the room was bobbing their head at a different speed? Remember how both members of Autechre were bobbing their heads at different speeds? Yeah.
Ahh idm, the indie rock of the electronic world. We should all start wearing white belts and be done with it.
