Overall a really brilliant evening. Good security, adequate parking, relatively organized venue, neat decor for a downtown loft. Highlights- Richard Devine absolutely melting the walls for 60 minutes. Hob-nobbing with a who's who in the Southern California electronic music scene. Complaints- minor ones, but a couple. Both Chris Clark and LFO opted for 45 minute dj sets. Would've MUCH prefered to hear them play live. Chris went new school acid-y hardcore breaks and Mark Bell very generic medium paced techno. L'usine getting squeezed out of his performance because he was the last one on the set list and everybody prior to him in the evening ran long. Jeff played for about 20 minutes from 3:30AM to 3:50. Both stages were a tad on the too loud side. Ongoing question between me and my friends- How long will RD get into his set before he breaks out something from Phoenecia/Soul Oddity/Takeshi Muto/Jeswa/Josh and Rom? We put the over/under at about 10 minutes. Sure enough...

I would have to agree that this was a very enjoyable concert. The security was really laid back about the whole thing, and the crowd was good, a few e-tards, but thats okay because I think they brought quite a few hot chicks to dance with them. Highlights for me are Jamie Lidell and Richard Devine. Lidell seem to enjoy himself so much, and was so entertaining to hear and watch that you couldn't be help but smile throughout his set. Richard Devine was also really into it and kicked some serious ass, the visuals for his set really worked well too. Complaints: Chris Clark fucking sucked, it seemed he brought a pc just he could turn on fruityloops and do as little as possible. The rave kiddies ate it up because he put out a heavy 4/4 beats. Sorry to break it to you, but this pose was getting tired in 1992. My review: The event was fun *because* it wasn't just IDMsters who attended. We showed up before it opened, and at first it was just the usual-looking crowd. They all stood behind us with their arms crossed being uniformly boring and undershowered and white and male which are the four traits defining all idm shows. They also seemed to be having some competition where the further you stood in the back and the more your arms were crossed, the cooler you were. I guess that seems to be the popular sport at most of these soulseek user conventions. But then actual people arrived and filled up the front and started dancing (!). By the time Prefuse 73 came on, the upstairs room was inching towards a subdued rave in vibe and quantity of people dancing around the speakers. The amount of fun being generated came overwhelmingly from people who were clearly not the usual scenesters, although I did notice a few Reaktor users getting a little groove on. I had to go before Richard Devine came on, but I left with hope in my heart for future events where non-generic-rave-music gets played live and people actually react and have fun. Fun! If fun is against the law of IDM, then call me an outlaw. If anyone out there likes to have/make fun at IDM shows rather than trying to project that IDM vibe that says "a little more DeBord, a little less rave," we should all meet up at a show and make a concerted effort to CONQUER. Let's compare it to a more typical IDM event like the last Autechre show. Oh yeah, remember how boring most of the crowd was? Remember how pointless it was standing there amidst a hundred guys with dark green shoulder bags while Autechre hit "play" on their Nord and sat there smoking weed and talking to some friend of theirs? Remember how everyone in the room was bobbing their head at a different speed? Remember how both members of Autechre were bobbing their heads at different speeds? Yeah. Ahh idm, the indie rock of the electronic world. We should all start wearing white belts and be done with it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

welcome to a post wherein no one will be snidely derided. how boring. LA's nesh exceeded underwhelming expectations tremendously. really, i expected a good time, not a (bugles resound) fucking great time. good crowd, mellow vibe, ideal dancing conditions (even if it was a little hot). no one's mentioned dntel's set yet really, so i will go ahead and say that it was only /alright/ as his sets go, but miles ahead of most idm shows as far as emotion goes. less sleak and smooth more heart and swoon! i must also agree with the seemingly unanimous endorsement of jamie lidell and his fantastic mic fuckery. talk about a show. prefuse was cool but the set had a bit of a 'push play' vibe. luke vibert, what i saw of his set anyway was pretty mellow. and dj ease played a bit of a disappointing set... when i saw him at the first coachella he played mostly dub music and he smoked the fattest spliff you've ever seen and it was CORRECT. too bad mark bell played a dj set. richard devine is not really my thing... impressive sound design unimpressive soul design (you know?) worst part of the evening was that omar from native instruments was an asshole. fuck you omar. gregory, human ape form __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
