This question has been gestating for a while, but it got spurred recently when listening to the Third Eye Foundation remix of "For the Damaged" by Blonde Redhead (who, incidentally, were in my home town of Portland last night putting on the best god damn rock show I've seen this year). At any rate, at PopKomm in '98, I saw Third Eye Foundation (or something that was billed as Third Eye Foundation) late one night at a beautiful, slightly run-down club on the outskirts of K?ln. This consisted of one skinny, balding fellow punching cards into a synth and churning out piercingly lush MBV-ish washes of sound and texture that left me either transfixed or teetering a bit dangerously, and without the benefits of chemical...er... enhancement. I can't even remember if there were beats involved. This was the first I'd heard by them, so I naturally trotted over to ye olde local record shoppe, but although I appreciate Ghost, pretty much everything else I've heard by the Foundation has disappointingly fallen within the pubescent "I used to listen to industrial and goth and now I want to try my hand at being menacing and oh-so-fucked-up" camp. I see a place for that sort of thing, but I'm still looking for the sound I found that one Cologne spring. Have they released anything along those lines????? Thanks much, M. ----- Made with affection by distrustful lovers. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. If you just like the guitar wash aspects, perhaps you would be happier with his "other" project--Flying Saucer Attack. Good stuff. At 10:23 AM 12/8/2000 -0800, you wrote:

well, i love em all, but I think the sound you're looking for comes more from the very first full length, Semtex (not to be confused with the Semtex single, although that is probably TEF's finest moment)... much more mbvish (overloaded guitars) with the occasional dnb beat, but more tracks than not feature gentle toms or no drums at all... also might look into the In Version record, since that's remixes/redos of songs by amp, crescent, fsa, and other Bristolians who developed their own lo-fi version of the MBV aesthetic... to be honest, I would say that ghost is pretty singular in its gritty fuckedupness in the TEF catalog... nothing else is quite that far in there in quite that way, so you might want to check out you guys kill me too. ===== the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yes, and if ya like drum and bass with scuzzy guitar wash generally, I'd heartily recommend Narcotic Beats by Accelera Deck. It's a lot simpler than TEF, but it's really nice and feely. Anthony. np: Foehn -- Insideout Eyes. It's got a hand-painted cover... how sweet is that??? ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Wright To: idm@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, December 08, 2000 7:50 PM Subject: Re: [idm] Third Eye Foundation If you just like the guitar wash aspects, perhaps you would be happier with his "other" project--Flying Saucer Attack. stuff. huh? matt elliot has almost nothing to do with FSA. He was their live guitarist briefly and may or may not have played on one album. FSA = David Pierce. But yeah, good stuff. ===== the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Shopping - Thousands of Stores. FSA = David Pierce only for one release (and that was the versus Telefunken thing), FSA started as Jon, Dave and someone called Claire (i think). What FSA has in common with third eye foundation at the moment is the band AMP who on "Astralmoonbeamprojections", and "Stenorette" (both Kranky) feature the first 3 FSA members, Paul Gulati (a la Soundsmith, who was a member of FSA for a bit, and now plays live with Movietone and Hood, i *think*), various members of Hood and Movietone. Alongside the two core members of AMP. This Bristol tradition (except Hood, from Leeds) dates back to a band called Linda's Strange Vacation (the band founded the label of the same name) who featured Matt Elliot, Dave Pierce, both AMPs, a few Hoods, Empresses, Halkyns, Soundsmiths, Movietones!!!!!!!!!!!!! (this is true as far as I know - i infer the band was of arkestra-like proportions in terms of size) - interested in that Ghost/Semtex like stuff?? the two AMP albums, the first A.M.P. Studio album ("Syzygy" on Earworm, though mebbee reissue still available on Ochre alongside the second LP "Alien Employment Registration Office" (something like that) - come on keep up), the Soundsmith album would, i imagine, all appeal: - whilst the Movietone album "Day and Night" and "Rustic Houses, Forlorn Valleys" by Hood are quite a bit away from idm stuff: the former is quite unlike anything i've heard (except maybe a reverb-laiden Arvo Part! with ocassional krauty drumming) whilst the latter is sort of ambient/drone/"indie" (in the way the JAMC, Dead C and MBV are indie). I recommend them all. okaye - sorry for length - skt "donuts? i told you, i don't like ethnic foods!" - charles montgomery burns --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
