Sometimes the 'intelligent' adjective is used to describe music with a quality of "ambient" music. Try listening to intelligent jungle, "intelligent jungle." etc.. You will find a lot of them have light soundscapes of flowing synthpads and melodies. The house variant is "Chill House" and although being more jazz oriented than ambient (in all what i've heard) it still is basically similar.. There's some intelligent jungle which is very jazz oriented.. Either way, chill house rules :)

I don't think LTJ Bukem is technically superior to anything :) What I've heard from GLR/LTJ Bukem is not less dancefloor oriented, or it wouldn't have a bunch of loops and strong breaks, but it does have an ambientish/light quality to it. Ok sometimes it might be used to describe that, and sometimes intelligent might be used to describe something that is complex and sometimes the term might describe other qualities. It's still a very weak "adjective" because most people won't know exactly what you are talking about it. Especially when you say stuff like "this is more intelligent dub techno then...blah blah". It's vague, nondescriptive, and sounds rather pompous.

Yes but then drill n bass ala Squarepusher might be considered "intelligent" by many...or even Photek and Source Direct. And I hear a HUGE difference between all of them.

I guess some of this could be considered tech-house or jazzy house. So what is "chill house" intelligent? And do you consider it to be "intelligent" because you like it?

Great point there is some jazzy jungle. It makes more sense to actually describe it in REAL TERMS instead of just lumping everything under "intelligent".

Some would consider it too chilled out... that sort of stuff usually sucks the energy out of the floor...unless mixed real well. Last time I saw LTJ Bukem, I wasn't sure what to expect but he mixed thru the tracks pretty fast and did lots of dj tricks to keep it interesting. WAY BETTER than the mixed Logical Progression stuff. I personally have never said one type of music is more intelligent than another, nor ever would. but it does sound rather pompous.

Chill is the adjective put on house music to mean the same if not similar than that Intelligent means when you put it on jungle. I don't consider any of it intelligent in the meaning of the word intelligent, that is.. "smart.." it's just music.

I didn't coin the term. Chill house is more often jazzy than ambient like. but either way, whether it's ambient like, or jazz-like, it's good (imho) I also like detroit house, but I wouldn't call it jazzy or ambient like. that's not to mean that jazzy music is more 'intelligent' or better than detroit, it's just not jazzy.. although some might go in that direction (that chill-house is better than detroit :) I've actually never used intelligent to describe jungle or house at all.. I always refer to it as jazzy or ambientish.. ambientish being one of my favorite descriptors that I use, heh :) but I think I know what the ppl who call that stuff intelligent mean by it.

I dunno. :) If you mix stuff, or you've ever tried mixing, you realize that mixing without having trainwrecks or any kind of problems is intelligent mixing :) As for LTJ Bukem being too chilled out, try listening to Orchestral Jam.. It hits pretty hard on the beats.. one of those ambientish things with loud, deep, penetrating beats. tho true a lot of the Good Looking stuff is quite light.
