Listened to Plastikmans "Afrika" the other day, and wondered what an african drummer would would think about that song -beatwise.So i went to the local african music importer and asked for the best african percussionist he knew. Choosing between a lot of different countries and styles, he picked out a Nyanyu Addo CD for me, in which sleeve it said he had earlier cooporated with house dj Ted Bowes. My question is, does anybody here have any knowledge about african percussionists? Im mostly into experimental electronic music, but sometimes i hear these amazing african beats on tv or radio, and i just dont know how to get some of that music - hopefully played with drums only. /Dwane. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

look for old records/repressed cds that contain recordings made by someone droppping a mic in the middle of a tribe and hitting record. you cant go wrong :) i always find this stuff used in world sections of local cd shops. sometimes the wire runs articles on this sort of stuff too, which i find nice, though i still have yet to hunt down anything that has been written up in that magazine -- but i find it groovy that they cover the music/field recordings. possible labels: folkways, jvc world of sound im sure someone could give you more. afrika is a pretty cool track. i recently pulled it to play in a set with a bunch of muslimgauze, t singh (the one song i like :), field recordings, aphex (that fun new almost tribalish track on the _or_ comp) .. and stuff like that. the african/mid east percussion sound really has kept my attention. good stuff. chris. Electronic music fans, with their insatiable apetite for hypnotic, repetitive beats, layered structures, and of course white noise, would love the African music style known as Mbira from Zimbabwe. The style involves an individual or an ensemble playing what we westerners call a "Thumb Piano", which is a small wooden box with tuned metal flaps that are plucked to play melodies. The piano itself is often mounted in a gourd bedecked with bottle caps or shells that, when the piano is resonating tones, vibrate to create a percussive kind of white noise which pervades the song. The music has a rigid but simple structure, consisting of four measures repeted, then iterated into the next four measures. Anyway, type in "Mbira" on Amazon or something and you'll find some good stuff. As far as ethnographic Mbira goes, I've had a lot of luck with the series of "world music" titles from WEA/ATLANTIC/NONESUCH. A westerner trained in Mbira, Erica Kundidzora Azim has an excellent album which is marketed as a new-agey 'relaxation' album, but is quite good. I suppose representing the African continent as I do, I should at least supply some kind of information toward this thread - Thus let me tell you to try to lay your hands and weave your ears around Amampondo - also known as Amampondo Drummers. They are a big group of musicians who play polyrhythmic beats on marimbas (big wooden "pianos" that are percussive instruments, like large scale xylophones) and a variety of drums. They bring a lot of energy to a live experience; to my mind this does not always translate quite so well to the recorded media but if you're unable to catch a show, the next best thing is a recording. If anybody's really keen, I can find out details of releases etc. I * --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Talking of African beats... The next District Six releases should be very African lead/influenced.. Ross has recently returned from African where he has been gathering material.... Sounds like there will be top notch remixes too..! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Who is Ross? Has he got any South African ties? Why did he name the label District 6? I have wondered about this since first seeing the label name ::: there's an area of Cape Town stigmatised by Apartheid history named District Six ... any connection at all?
