dunno about the idm content here, but it's a brilliant film.. paul thomas anderson (director) has done 2 solid films previouis to this one. hard eight & boogie nights. while not being as good as boogie nights, magnolia is still very grand. - wells oliver / s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu " The ball is round. though it was no Fight Club the themes and ideas were pretty sweet, but was there supposed to be an explanations for the frogs. no one in the movie even asked why or how. however, the film having somewhat of and unrealistic base, i guess its all possible. still if theres no explaining, theres got to be some kind of reasoning............i think. over// ?-???-? [SPOILER...] If you watch the film closely, you'll see the numbers 8 and 2 appearing all over the place, and the specific bible reference "Exodus 8:2" appears on an ad in a bus shelter (and perhaps elsewhere - I didn't catch on to the 8 & 2 thing until halfway through the film). The bible quote being referenced is: "But if you refuse to release them, then I am going to plague all your borders with frogs" - God telling Moses to tell the Pharaoh to release the Jews or he would rain frogs upon them. Of course, why Anderson chose to include this plot point in the film isn't really explained. But taking the "subliminal" 8s and 2s into account, it makes a bit more sense. Greg obIDM - the new Pan American album is killer! Dubby, Pole-esque minimalism with splashes of jazz and drone-rock. Guest appearance by members of Low on one track. It's out at the end of the month on Kranky - highly recommended! -- Greg Clow - greg@stainedproductions.com - http://www.stainedproductions.com feedback monitor - electronic & experimental radio/reviews/interviews http://www.stainedproductions.com/feedback/ 158 Close Ave. 2nd Floor - Toronto, Ontario M6K 2V5 - Canada --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

exodus 8:2.. numerous references to it throughout the film (storefronts, street signs, etc). rather subtle, but there.. exodus 8 deals with moses and the rain of frogs; all of that good silly stuff in the bible. oops. but, wonderful film again. sort of a flowing, "operatic" experience with great performances from everyone, especially john c. reilly (who played the police officer) and tom cruise (wow). i even liked julianne moore a good deal; most reactions to her are of love or hate, but i feel she is a very solid actor (boogie nights, myth of fingerprints...). everyone ought to see it (again, even!). and, uhm, i like autechre (had to put some idm content in there). - wells oliver / s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu " The ball is round. re: the frogs in magnolia: saw the film last night. my girlfriend noticed the references to exodus 8:2, so we went to a bookstore after the movie and read that passage of the the bible. talks about the different things that will happen, the plague of gnats, of this and that. exodus 8:2 refers to the plague of frogs. you'd have to read the bible verse for more info.andrew duke Bell Ex-One wrote:
