That is so sad. I really enjoyed the new album, I was just starting to become a fan, I had no idea he was from Chicago, which makes this new hit even closer to home. These winters are killers.

Tower Records in Shibuya, Tokyo, has a fair bit of stock. HMV in Shibuya also has a surprisingly decent range Before I get lynched for mentioning those store names, I should say Shibuya is a kinda special place. If anyone knows anywhere in Tokyo that sells a better range of more "underground" stuff, let me know I've been keeping my eyes open since Cisco shut but it's so hard to find the more boutique shops in this city - a lot of the time they're not on ground floor -----Original Message----- From: Esa Ruoho [mailto:esaruoho@gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, January 28, 2009 11:03 PM To: idm Subject: Re: [idm] Best physical outlets/shop to buy IDM, Leftfield & Ambient wow what?? bentcrayon exists?? i wonder if they've changed their design.. ...thought it was dead years ago 2009/1/28 Jeremy Bible <experimedia@gmail.com>

Disc Union just north of the Shinjuku (yamanote) station had bunches and bunches. Its been a few years since I've been there. Its a great store for Prog/Kraut rock, hip-hop, indy, punk, etc. too. Seven (narrow) floors of wall to wall vinyl and CDs.....Also, in Daikanyama there were a few more boutique-y type spots that had a bunch of underground electronic music. The stores I saw were really close to the station, but the names elude my memory, sorry.-----Nate On Jan 28, 2009, at 6:14 PM, Sam Marginson (FORUM8) wrote:

here in NYC the best place i know of is 'etherea records'. friendly and knowledgeable staff, and they make sales by letting ppl listen in headphones, or playing stuff open in the store that just happens to be fucking great. that stuff is certainly stocked at the store 'other music', but it's harder to access, and their aesthetic is more eclectic overall. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I seem to have good luck digging up cool used shit at amoeba and rasputin's both in berkeley and sf. any good tips on getting used records in the bay area? I need to change it up a bit. I totally loved the Warszawa shop in Shibuya, which is also home to Com.a's Romz Records. It's at No.3 Tanaka Biru 3F 31-3 Udagawa (Shibuya), not far from the station. There I could find some Joseph Nothing and of course Kaada, but still no luck with World's End Girlfriend and Geinoh Yamashirogumi. They also had this big wooden cashiers desk full of signatures by artists passing by, like Kid606, Christopher Willits, Alva Noto, Shitmat and so on. - purusha 2009/1/29 Chris Taylor <christaylor415@gmail.com>:

Ah now that I think of it, if you're into electronic noise, there is this hidden noise spot-shop in West Shinjuku. You will find it in Daikan Plaza at the 7th floor, it is a big ugly and brown building with a KARAOKE sign on the outside, next to mosburger. Nishi-shinjuku 7-1-7. Even if you're not into noise I suggest to have a look at the place! - purusha 2009/1/29 Sam Marginson (FORUM8) <sam@forum8.co.jp>:

Hi, speaking of Tokyo: you might want to check out ONSA -- a small, one-man run shop with very good music and a friendly owner. This is the only place I know that has preview CDRs of almost every release (including records!). If you cannot find what you are looking for, simply ask the owner (he's Japanese but I think he speaks English too). The shop has moved a couple of times over the last seven or eight years, first from Shimokitazawa to Ebisu, and is now just five minutes walk from Shinjuku Station on a second floor. Here's how to get there: http://map.yahoo.co.jp/pl?p=%C5%EC%B5%FE%C5%D4%BD%C2%C3%AB%B6%E8%C2%E5%A1%B9%CC%DA2-13-3&lat=35.68387778&lon=139.69927389&type=&ei=euc-jp&sc=3&gov=13113.31.2.13.3 Just remember: the shop is open until 21:00 but closed on Wednesdays(!) Then there is 「スパイラル」 on Aoyama-Dori, B1 Exit of Omotesando Station. A CD-boutique shop with several listening posts! Disc Union in Shibuya too is a good address for electronic music: mainly used, but also some new CDs, as well as a lot of vinyl. HMV in Shibuya reduced the number of shelves for electronic stuff a couple of years ago and now the more 'experimental' stuff (i.e electronica) is one floor up. What used to be Cisco in Shibuya had changed to a DJ hardcore techno outlet. I haven't gone there for a while, so the shop might be closed down already :) Personally, I think that Tower in Shinjuku 9F has a better (broader: Avant-garde, Contemporary) selection of music than Tower Shibuya (where, if I remember correctly, they shelf Autechre and some other stuff on the Club Floor). I also like Tower Shinjuku, because some of the staff members really know their stuff well. Finally, there are a few tiny shops (CD and vinyl) in the back streets of Shibuya, some really strange places on upper floors accessible through hidden staircases. The names and owners of these shops, however, change too often for me to keep track :) Look for signs in upper-floor windows, saying: Nantoka-nantoka Records! There is also a tiny, interesting shop in Hachijoji, selling CDs and some really, really obscure underground CDR's -- but I cannot remember the shop's name right now. It's also a venue of some sort.
