Hi list. I've spent the weekend really getting into the Sutemos stuff. Excellent. Thanks to Sutemos and Walkman for making this available! However I'm having difficultly with IT2. I've downloaded the Sute7 zip on 2 different machines, a PC and a Mac, and the file will not expand properly on this Mac G4. I've succeeded in downloading individual tracks but they are in a .mpga format. Can anyone give me a clue as to how to convert this to a quicktime friendly format on a Mac/OSX/Quicktime Pro? Should be easy but I'm failing. Thanks guys! Hello, All of our files are 192 mp3 encoded with lame usually. I do not know what measures should be taken to make it mac friendly (I don't own Mac myself and I never did). It would be much appreciated to know how to solve this issue so there are no such problems in our future releases. As for this zip - archive.org makes it "on the fly" so there are some downloading problems associated with this. You should ask the artists to encode them to FLAC rather than MP3, then let the end user encode them how they like. FLAC is a lossless format, like WAV, but it's about 4 to 5x larger than an MP3 file. WAV is more like 8 to 9x larger than MP3. MP3 sucks, I can't believe it ever got standardized. A 56kbps ogg encoded track has better quality than a 128kbps mp3. Have a nice day now, sine@IntelligentDanceMusic.com On 14 Nov 2004 at 22:12, Walkman wrote:

I agree that FLAC is better than mp3 in the sense of quality and compatibility. On the other hand it is way bigger than mp3 - some people do not have an ability/wish to download such big files, others don't know how to use them (even if include all required software/instructions in the zip) and some artists don't have suitable connections to upload them. So I guess that's a bit of problem here. Btw, I was actually thinking about making Intelligent Toys 2 lossless... It would be super if people would spend the effort to familiarize themselves with FLAC and how to encode their music using it. Having two downloads would be awesome, one lossless and one which is compressed via ogg or mp3 or something. If everyone would view: http://flac.sourceforge.net/ and: http://flac.sourceforge.net/features.html and some of my personal bookmarks: http://www.bobulous.net/misc/audioFormats.html Here's a tag editor: http://easytag.sourceforge.net/ Winamp and xmms both have support for flac, either by default or plugin format depending on your version. When dealing with IDM we are using such a vast array of sound, that once encoded to lower quality (mp3, ogg, etc), the listener/consumer is missing out on so much of the original production. Reminder: My web station (IntelligentDanceMusic.com) supports flac audio, all artists please view: http://www.IntelligentDanceMusic.com/upload.shtml Have a nice day now, sine@IntelligentDanceMusic.com On 14 Nov 2004 at 22:50, Walkman wrote:

iTunes on both Mac and PC supports Apple Lossless, which is basically as good as FLAC/Monkey's Audio (Ape) files in file size and quality and best of all the end user doesn't have to do anything other than install iTunes. It's a lot easier than dicking with plug-ins and so on (imo). Sure it's not open source, but hey, we're talking about the vast majority of users who couldn't care less about open source and only want simplicity. mp3 got standardized over 10 years ago. Ogg is much more recent, thus the increased compression capabilities. Mp3 is actually quite good considering its age. -- Mr. Tangent [the binary police] www.mrtangent.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Thanks for your help and comments everyone. I can't explain my failure to download readable (non corrupted?) mp3s here on my Mac at home, but it worked fine on WinXP at work. So there IS a reason for going to work! So now I've got into Intelligent Toys 2 as well. Ace! Keep up the good work guys! Jon. On Sunday, November 14, 2004, at 08:03 PM, Jon Scordia wrote:

No conversion neccessary - "mpga" stands for MPEG audio, which happens to be MP3, so just rename the file. -- Kurt Bernhard Pruenner --- Haendelstrasse 17 --- 4020 Linz --- Austria .......It might be written "Mindfuck", but it''s spelt "L-A-I-N"....... np: nix --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I had the same problem. So instead of trying to let os x expand the file itself (which was never going to finish) I quit the process, opened stuffit expander and dragged the files into there, and it expanded it perfectly. I assume the zipping method was slightly altered since the last intelligent toys release as they all worked perfectly. I think that the zip format as many slight subtle differences in it's various implementations, but a good industrial strength application (stuffit expander for os x, winzip for windows) can usually deal with these.
