Oh it's true! I totally love the fact that someone again posts on Prog rock and people go through the roof with colorful posts, while the usual IDM drudgery yields almost zero results.. HA!! BUT ANYWAY- I'm a TRUE fan of Yes, owning about 90% of their records, and enjoy their music way more than say Autechre these days - but - I am totally into Pink Floyd right now!! I'm really into their sound, how it hooks you on this really human level. Like how certain musical idea repeat and change during the corse of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", or how "the wall" sets up these themes and changes them slightly each time.. all great stuff. But to answer the really important question: John Anderson would destroy Roger Gilmore, because he's whip out his magic powers and sick wood spirits on him! But Roger Waters would take them both - handily! Also, I'm a bit shocked no one has mentioned Mahivishnu Orchestra or Goblin with all this prog talk! What about Guru Guru?! Oh, and on the pop culture note as origionally posted- My bet for best prog-pop group would definately be Styx! LONG LIVE STYX!!! ROCK Donna Summer

mahavishnu prog rock? i always considered mahavishnu and a majority of what john mclaughlin did "acid fusion." that's pointless though. inner mountain flame is an incredible album, as is the trident sessions (i'm very thankful this was released). they play a huge influence in my work. fucking amazing compositions (sometimes a bit overboard). i'm not a fan of apocolypse at all, birds of fire is decent. i've a few other 12"s i can't remember the name of. visions of the emerald beyond is great, but some of the singing gets to me. anyone heard adventures in radioland or inner worlds? goblin!!! oh man, i can't say enough great things abour their work. zombi (soundtrack to dawn of the dead) is in my top ten all-time favorite albums. they create the greatest atmospheres and tones. love em. i think i'm so drawn to mahavishnu and goblin etc because they seem far more conceptual and obviously a lot more work goes into their compositions than most IDM artists. most IDM artists i talk to say "i just sit and write tracks" "drop in whatever sounds good" without any real goal or depth. i think this is a major shortcoming of any genre, but especially this one. the 70s had the most amazing music in my opinion, especially because of the above. i just wish more people would realize what they did and the importance of it so it can influence more of today's work. good call donna, jonathan canupp tenandtracer acre ----- Original Message ----- From: "donna summer" <donnasummerwfmu@hotmail.com> To: <j_stickel_otfp@hotmail.com>; <jpklein@telocity.com>; <cazeone@ramdis.com>; <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, December 19, 2002 3:43 PM Subject: RE: [idm] yes indeed NO NO NO- DS

Damn! I heard that one! But the thing that drew me to "IDM" anyway was the interest in experimental form. Too bad so many of the early practitioners- and so many of the newer practioners have lost interest in these new forms. Of course there are exceptions galore, but on the whole our little genere here has gotten downright dogmatic.

I've talked to so many people who all say that they feel such a huge musical debt to groups like Yes, Mahivishnu, and Pink Floyd. Certain their influence is widely felt! ...I agree with you to a certain point, however thats acctually one of the more obvious reasons why I enjoy IDM. I can enjoy well produced conceptual art just as much, but from my point of view it seems EXTREAMLY hard to do without coming off as pretentious or even ridiculous. IDM, to me, seems to rely more on an exploration of sound, technique, and expression rather than social-political ideals, and current event commentary. However, with rare exceptions I usually dislike a song if I can be over 80% certain of the message the author was trying to express..."if he has to come right out and say it, then he's missing the point of music in general"...so my tatse may be a bit sour in the area of art with 'meaning'. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 3 months FREE*. http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail&xAPID=42&PS=47575&PI=7324&DI=7474&SU= http://www.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/getmsg&HL=1216hotmailtaglines_advancedjmf_3mf --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
