yea when i saw the twin he really didnt do much. just came out and sat down in front of his laptop indian style and mixed mp3 for an hour. BUT, the mere presence of his genius made up for all of it. the music was gr8, therefore making it a gr8 performance to me. after all it is about the music. lights were cool when i was 16 now i could care less, just as long as the music is good. autechre stuck everyone in a small club in miami and turned off all the lights and performed with no show whatsoever, and it was damn incredible. even though it was just them standing there behind their laptops with all the lights off only able to catch a glimpse of the screen reflecting onto their face. The music was tight making it a great performance. just some ramblings of mine Dustin In a message dated 8/17/02 2:57:12 PM Eastern Daylight Time, cookie@mashup.org writes: << pay good money to HEAR artists because the music gives me PLEASURE, could care less if they act on stage for me too. Maybe you've missed my previous posts but I don't see an electronic performance as a rock concert. Many performers are trying to create an ambience and be the background music to people getting together and socialising, that's why they'd rather be out of the spot light and accompanying the visuals. Its a different GENRE why can't it have a different 'performance'? I don't see that as arrogance, maybe its something YOU don't like but an >> --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I would be pissed off if I paid $20 to see some guy sitting indian style on a stage mixing mp3s. I can do that in my bedroom for free. If I want to see RDJ in action, I'll download Windowlicker. I can deal with a musician not physically doing stuff on stage, but I'd like to hear something live that I couldn't hear at home if I'm paying a lot of money and going through the trouble of seeing someone play live. This is probably why I have never bothered to go to "idm" shows. I want to see Mouse On Mars play, but in the mean time, I'm stick to indie rock/metal shows. Anyone caught Dio on that scorpions tour yet? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Ok, let me ask you this... How can you tell if someone is dj'ing or playing "live" ...if you've never heard their music before? What's the point of labeling music as being better or worse based on the way its performed BEFORE YOU HEAR IT? (i.e. how can you assume that all dj's are worse than 'live' performer right off the bat?) Reality is, its a new medium...new instruments...new way to "perform" and there will always be people resisting it the way they resisted rock and roll and later digital music and photography. concrete cookie p.s. I've been to plenty of "rock" concerts where I paid $20, the artist was no bigger than a peanut...couldn't tell if the were LIVE if my life depended on it but still had a great time....

I heard most DJs get their start as plumbers. Uh, and I can DJ mp3s for myself at home, I think that was the point. With the right equipment you can also make laptop music for yourself at home. The nature of the PERFORMANCE is what you PAY MONEY to SEE. If I rented a big PA system, video mixer + projector, and paid two skinny guys with brown hair to sit behind a rack of gear with a computer, I could charge most of the people on this list $15 a pop to see any number of IDM acts. And rave about it later. Just load the laptop with the appropriate tracks and fade between a few screensavers for visual counterpoint. Maybe I shouldn't have told you all that.

Uh, digital photography? From the planet where? With what kind of cheese? Why does everybody on this list think that all they have to do to win an argument is label the opposition as reactionary? What does this have to do with anything I said? I'll answer it anyways. If I pay $15-$20 to stand up for hours in a smokey club to watch somebody perform, I had better be able to tell that they are playing live whether I've heard them or not.

I never said anything was better or worse, I spoke completely from my own perspective and made it obvious that I was stating my own preference. I'm not huge on live shows. but when I do go to them, I want to see a show. I want to see somebody who's main purpose for playing the show is to do something kind of unique and spectacular that only they can do. If you can't reproduce what you do in the studio live on stage, then DJ-ing isn't a bad thing to take up (just don't try to charge me $20 to see someone doing novice cross-fades from WinDJ or whatever)... or you could figure out an alternative way to present the material, such as a live reinterpretation of the music, like Mouse on Mars and Autechre seem to be known for doing.
