<<Is all their stuff this moody and jagged?>>
The first full track on Even (I guess technically it's the second
track--Bin?) really blows me away. While's tendency to use spooky minor
keys and vibraphonish timbres over steadily plodding rhythms always conjures
up an image of a trans-Saharan caravan for me, especially that track. I
swear, I'm suddenly on a camel in the middle of the desert. The Lock EP has
a few songs like that, I think B2, C2, D1 ("Trap" and "Shelf" maybe?), but
for some reason Even strikes me as a little more mature, at least in that
regard. The spooky melodies on Even tend to noodle around a bit more than
the more straightforward spooky melodies on Lock, which is a good thing. I
don't like the straight-up IDM drumtracks as much and he seems to have more
of those on earlier records (like Haze). Although I admit I'm still
breaking in Even (at least the second record) after several months and I
haven't gotten the new Slip LP yet-- For some reason I don't remember any
reviews of that... But for $10 for the CD you can't go wrong.
<<also an interview with him at my site,
http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~rstanton>>
I would like to read it, but the menu on that site doesn't work (for me).
Maybe I'm just computer lame, or if it's too cool for Netscape (and, ipso
facto, too cool for me) that would also explain it. I would also like to
browse the archives for reviews of Slip and stuff, because I know there's a
While thread here every month, but the older archives are zipped somehow and
my computer doesn't want to unzip them. What ever happened to plain text
files that everyone can access and enjoy? It's not like they're taking up
*that* much memory. Stupid archives.
