OK, some of you eggheads who have to buy everything will probably disagree with me, but I just have to say that, despite the flood of new Warp releases, this summer seems otherwise bereft of new outstanding IDM releases. I mean, other than the just-released Marumari album, all the stuff I find myself continually listening to and loving is from the first part of the year or last year. So anyways, I'm wondering what things everyone is really really really looking forward to (besides Mr. A to the X)? I mean, the only things I'm really looking forward to at this point, in the Summer, are Bogdan's new EP (hopefully on its way to me now), md's Between Gaps, that headphone compilation, maybe the new Eardrum album, assuming Leaf manages to get it out, but I don't know about that. Definitely upcoming Proem, Machine Drum, and Freeform. Maybe the Solvent on Morr, but as much as I liked the last Solvent, I'm wary of Morr releases. Otherwise, looking forward to a nice end of the summer, with Bjork and Tori Amos both coming out with new material, though it promises to not be the best for either of them. I have to give props to the first 2-3 tracks on Funckarma's Solid State. Excellent start. Too bad the rest kinda shrivels back to the generic level of their first release. -Bitter Adam ;-) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have to agree with some qualifications here...when I wrote with glowing approval of Solid State, I was on track 3. Still, I don't think the rest of it is all that bad - better than what I'd previously heard by them. Those first tracks are QUITE nice, though. I think a show of them drifts through the remainder - and I think I need to spin it more before I can say much of substance on it. jeff

I'm looking forward to the next BoC release... whenever that will actually happen. Anyone heard anything definite? Also, anyone know if Arovane has anything new coming out? Lance, Thanks for the info and the site reference. I'll be sure to check it out. But I'm curious if you've heard these yet? I don't have access to a record player and don't have any sort of store that would carry these and/or would allow me to go in and listen. So what I'm wondering is, if you have in fact heard them, what is your opinion of these latest releases? How do they stack up to Atol Scrap or Tides? To me, the other two releases under the name Arovane are quite different from one another and I wonder where their sound is going. It seems to me that they are still trying to define their 'sound' in many ways.

It seems like all the things coming out this summer are just more albums from people we already know. At least, that's what seems to get discussed on the list most. Probably because such things lead to better arguments :D But as other people've stated, there are a few newer artists that have things out, but most of it is just more of the same from people we already know. So none of it's really groundbreaking - it's just better or worse than what came out earlier this year/last summer. cheeers, /derek At 08:12 AM 7/10/2001 -0700, you wrote:

Or because of the way memes work... a lot of good stuff I've enjoyed this summer, ontheotherhand, has been getting overlooked because of all the releases by people like Funckarma and Autechre and SQP + ilk and upcoming (maybe) releases from AFX, etc. As to what I'm looking forward to, it mostly consists of a bunch of stuff that's been out on vinyl finally coming out on CD, e.g. the Accelera Deck CD. What I've been listening to, over and over, since the summer began and a little bit beforehand: 1. Ural 13 Diktators: Total Destruction (Forte) 2. Bisk: Moonstruck Parade (Sub Rosa) 3. Fennesz: Endless Summer (Mego) 4. Takkyu Ishino: Karaokejack (Ki/oon) 5. Electric Company: Slow Food (Planet µ) 6. V/A: House Of Distraction (Schematic) 7. V/A: Quatermass versus Rather Interesting (Quatermass) 8. Wagon Christ: Musipal (Ninja Tune) 9. Mouse On Mars: Idiology (Thrill Jockey) And last but certainly not least, the Jollymusic self-titled CD has been in heavy rotation since it came out (on Nature). Personally I think it's kind of sad that SQP, AE, AFX & BOC etc. get so much attention, since it's really just a matter of opinion, everybody here knows who they are and with few exceptions everybody here buys there new stuff as soon as it comes out whether it gets the thumbs up on this list or not. I just try to bring attention, when I review things, to the side of IDM/electronics that I don't see represented much here. Being the side with less glitches/abstruse modal melodies and more, well, vocoders and such. I'll be hitting Amoeba Records on my way to see the Tigerbeat6 show in Oakland this weekend, hopefully that'll be a frutiful stopover and I can tell you all about more stuff you possibly haven't found in the Used/Discount bins yet. no! not memes!

hear hear. Many of the "established" idm artists really don't need much discussion - at this point, either you like their past output, or you don't. Much of the discussion on the list would be better suited to the "idm fanclub list" instead of the "idm discussion list" :D

Please allow me to jump in and do something a little out of character- say something about the latest release from toshoklabs: Caural "Initial Experiments in 3-D" If anyone is interested in hearing a very talented newcomer in the tweaked breakbeat sample collage style of Amon Tobin, Luke Vibert, Bogdan Raczynski or perhaps the Ninja camp, you very well may find Caural to your liking. It's an album that covers a lot of ground stylistically but manages to consistently convey Zak Mastoon's (aka Caural) quirky vision. Be on the lookout for Zak on upcoming releases on other labels (he's one to watch!) but in the meantime this debut full length is available from Skimo, Bent Crayon, Forced Exposure etc as well as the toshoklabs online store. ...ok back to the regualr scheduled programming, and sorry for the promo, I don't usually do that, but I just thought of recommending a great disc by a not so familiar name...it's a real juicy summer listen...RealAudio on the toshoklabs site... peace -nate On Tue, 10 Jul 2001, Thomas Millar wrote:
