these days, most people don't go to shows for the music. these are events, social gatherings. it's like going to a batman movie with your friends -- you're not there for the crisp cinematography, but rather the ritualistic throwing of popcorn and soda at the screen.

For better or for worse, most shows are booked at places where the live entertainment is only a part of the venue's social function. If it bothers everybody so much, bring along a bunch of fliers which say "Talking is not permitted. Latecomers will be seated between acts at the discretion of management". For the most part, I prefer it that way. Let's face it- live shows are not consistently entertaining enough to stand on their own merits if you go frequently enough.
