Did anyone who went to the Big Chill manage to tape Tom Middleton's slot on Big Chill FM at 3am on Saturday morning? I didn't due to a malfunctioning tape recorder, and a brain in a similar state. As for his DJ set on Sunday afternoon, Human League - Fascination..haha cheesy but we'll go with it... followed by Bowie's Lets Dance...oh dear, just ignore it and keep dancing....but oh no the Police - Every Little Thing ..... Tom, that is far too cheddary. (Didn't he play the same 3 records last year?) Does this herald the return of the New Romantic sound? Aphex Twin also plays Human League in his sets, and I heard Luke Vibert play a Visage 'b' side recently. Get those frills, cuffs and pixie boots out again, boys and girls. _____________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Aphex Twin has frequently acknowledged his love for Human League, particularly 'Dare.' If you're looking for context, all those guys were in their Wonder Years during the mid to late 80's. Those bands featured electronic sounds in a new context, and I can see how those synth sounds could make young boys fantasize about getting an SH101 and trying to make their own noises at home. The other huge influence you can hear in their music is the mid-80's electro and hip hop. Again this was stuff that was 'in the air' back then.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. you can take every piece of techno/and ambient that I own but don't even think about touching my synth pop collection. These were the days when people actually used synthesizers. Bryan onnow:spooky "found sound" onnext:anything box

Kelly, I didn't actually mean to knock Tom for playing this. He was just getting the crowd going by playing a few old favourites - just as he used to do when he played the Grange Hill theme (a kids TV program over here). I spose it's a reaction to the 'every record has got to be only known to the cognoscenti' approach sometimes prevalent at these events (tho not at the Big Chill). Incidentally, the highlight of his set was Kirsty Hawkshaw singing her Opus 3 hit (tho' she was jokingly cursing Mark and Tom for making her do it!). Its on Coalition records... it was released about 10/11 months ago, but only got a CD release... There have been a couple of singles. Leafy lane, which is one of the best tracks on the album. Its produced by Mark, and the 12" has remixes from Circulation and another track by Kirsty herself. The other 12" is Sci-Clone with remixes by Danny Breaks and Lemon D... Dan. -----Original Message----- From: idm-owner@hyperreal.org [mailto:idm-owner@hyperreal.org]On Behalf Of ae1650@wayne.edu Sent: 18 August 1999 17:48 To: drift wood Cc: Kelley Hackett; idm@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (idm) Global Comms....yet again speaking of kirsty.. did her solo album get officially released yet? I thought it was actually released about April this year. Unfortunately Coalition went under about a month afterwards - resulting in vast quantities of the CD appearing in every bargain bin in the UK... peter
