Ummmm - yes... although this is surely an age related thing? I remember being TOTALLY bowled over by Larks Tongues in Aspic at the time it came out (yes, okay, I *am* that old), and played my cherished cassette till it fell apart. Recently a friend picked up the vinyl in a 2nd hand shop and I begged to borrow it. It was a nostalgic ride down memory lane and the music came floowing back to me as the opening chords struck out - but no, it's not what I'd sit down and listen to by choice these days : there's far too much new and enticing stuff around. That being said, the final track, Book of Saturdays, is still oh so beautiful :-) Yes it is and I won't brook any dissidence! Not me, mate. After 'Red' it was downhill all the way. Let's not forget that they featured amongst their line-ups John Wetton of the execrable Asia , the lyrics of Pete Sinfield whose poetry is on a par with Jon Anderson's and Greg Lake of ELP before we get all nostalgic about them. But I spose, when compared with other prog groups from the same period, they are on another level. But there was certainly nothing D (Dance) about them. I wasn't really alluding to KC being Dance Music, but to the way KC fans and IDM fans are both extremely microscopic in their scrutiny of the music/scene - which isn't a bad thing, I'm including myself as such after all! And, you must admit that not many other dinosaur prog bands from the 70's were using electronic gear to anywhere near the same extent as KC in the early 80's, whether you like the tunes or not. Thanks for what was most likely the first mention of Asia on the IDM list though! :) ******************************************* David Read - Label Manager Liquid Sky Music 245 West 29th Street, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10001 www.liquidskymusic.com -----Original Message----- From: drift wood [SMTP:sequential_circus@yahoo.co.uk] Sent: Tuesday, March 21, 2000 11:09 AM To: dave@liquidskymusic.com Cc: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (idm) re: Ae and King Crimson --- David Read <dave@liquidskymusic.com> wrote:

Not necessarily... I'm 15 (yes really). I listen to it in any windows of time between poking zits, procrastinating, thinking of obscure taglines and being insecure :-). The only snag is my compulsory teenage cynicism prevents me from enjoying the lyrics... Seriously (and on another topic), is there some kind of automatic filter which could be put into action over the list? i.e. one which blocks any email with the words (say) 'flying f***', 's***fit', the usual four-letter epithets? It would at least make endless arguments more civil (or drive them off the list). I suspect, however, that some kind of sophisticated insult code would evolve... (BTW, big up to Andy for possibly the longest non-trade post ever. 238 brilliant lines, 108 your own (I know, sadster alert). Genius.) Whew! Well, I'm pleased to see I stand corrected (there's hope for our youth, etc. etc. :-) ) Now what I'm curious about is how you came to this music : did you actively seek it out, or via your parents' record collection, or what? All of the artists you mentioned worked with them before Red, so what's your point? Saying that King Crimson was the "IDM of the 60's and 80's" is a little over the top, if not downright goofy, but I don't get this whole "so-and-so played with so-and-so after he left so-and-so, therefore he's a cheeseball" mentality. The only song I can think of by King Crimson that fits nicely onto IDM-related compilations I've made is 'The Sheltering Sky' from Discipline. Damn that song is nice.

The point I was trying to make was that King Crimson didn't exist in a vacuum apart from the other bands in the proggie world, they shared some of the drawbacks of the genre such as pomposity and over-elaboration. When they rose above the limitations of the genre they made some great music, but lets not place them on a pedestal because a lot of their LP's are quite patchy. Before we go any further, I must quote Pete Sinfield (KC's resident poet): The wall on which the prophets wrote Is cracking at the seams. Upon the instruments of death The sunlight brightly gleams. When every man is torn apart With nightmares and with dreams, Will no one lay the laurel wreath As silence drowns the screams. Enuff said, surely! Matt. PS. Can I just appeal here for no-one to continue this thread and start talking about Van Der Graaf Generator? ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
