i just want to get some opinions on the new prodigy video for 'smack my bitch up'. in case anyone hasn't seen it, it's basically shot from a first person perspective and is a series of shots of women being fondled and generally harrassed, with lots of clever vomiting footage. i'm just wondering what meaning, if any, people find behind this video/song. is it in fact mysogonist? i was a little unsettled by it, but i don't think there's much meaning (sexist or otherwise) in any prodigy track. i'm not really asking for prodigy bashing, or really even opinions on the song's merit as a track at all. i realize politics are not a popular topic on this list either, but i think this video requires a little discussion. any opinions/insight appreciated. - wells oliver : s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu "all these things we'll one day swallow whole and fade out again and fade out again"

Blah, blah, blah, misogynistic, blah, blah, blah, racy. Whatever. I had a friend of mine tape it for me last night as I figured that MTV would never show it again (and more importantly because I don't have a TV at school). Since I already knew what it was going to be like I wasn't too amazed by it. What my friend and his roommates thought was a little more of a litmus test than I could really be. They obviously loved the nudity and whatnot but the other thing that struck them was the way it portrayed getting really drunk. Some of them remarked that it was bringing up flashbacks of some wild nights. As far as violence toward women, they laughed at the part where the protagonist kicks the shit out of everyone in the nightclub. On the whole, they loved it, more for the nudity and portrayal of (especially) rollicking good times than for any message it may have been trying to put across (frankly, I doubt there was one). You want my take, I don't see a damn thing wrong with it. Mysogonist? Nah, it seams to me that everyone in the video gets abused, regardless of their sex, especially the dj (and the turntables)! My only problem is, day before last, sitting around getting stoned, a friend fresh in from london described the whole video, in graphic detail. Then last night, MTV finally premiered it (with a nasty disclaimer no less!) and it wasn't nearly as good as my his description! I was expecting lines of coke flying into the camera and stuff like that! They have some cool effects, like the shaking bits and what they did with the music (level, eq, effects, etc) to follow the environment being shown was tres dope. Overall, I though it was an ok video, but can see some problems arising from it. First off, it's hands down the raciest thing mtv's ever shown. Full frontal nudity, booze, drugs and that wierd techno stuff. It's going to scare a lot of people, especially parents. Fuck'em... word out, brock np: Bionic Harmonic - 'I'd love to turn you on'

Well, I haven't yet seen this but perhaps Keith was feeling a little misogynistic at the time, as one of my friends flatmates was going out with him at the time and dumped him, tellin him that as she's a bisexual, she was leaving to live with her girlfriend in Brazil who could give her multiorgasms that Keith couldn't! Maybe he wasn't feelin too fond of women that particular week! Travelling down to the Blue Note last week, I noticed some Prodigy flyposters on the walls which were black with just the word Prodigy in white and somebody had spraypainted underneath all of em, "Smack my Keith up!" and apparantly, when Chris Cunningham went round to the Prodg's to show them Aphex's Come to Daddy vid, they were all covering their faces saying it was toooo scary! awwww bless! i was a little unsettled by it, but i don't think
