Hi Folks, Whilst I find talk of sample rates and hearing ranges pretty boring I am amused by non-quality-of-sound-reasons for preferences. For example, the pro-vinyl camp *always* mentions the joint-rolling issue whilst the pro-digital camp *always* mention the in-car issue. How about this: I've been burgled twice in the last 4 years. Each time I lost a sizeable CD collection. Each time the vinyl remained untouched. Therefore the seriously anal trainspotter should buy vinyl :-) Anything to add?! GRob ;-) NP: Howard Shore's soundtrack to 'Crash' which, despite being guitar based, is as rhythmic, involving and unnerving as any IDM release I've heard recently. The film is superb as well, by the way.

Completely off-topic, but I have to mention that I feel that the film was horrible. Have you read the book? The movie pales in comparison. The director, David Cronenberg, seems to have something about wanting to turn difficult books into movies (i.e. Naked Lunch). Just as with that novel, I think it's pretty impossible to get the full effect that the author intended unless you were to use the book as your shooting script. Crash the movie winds up being a film about people doing weird things for no apparent reason, whereas the book is about people doing wierd things for very definate reasons, however implausible they may seem to be. It's no wonder that Ted Turner didn't like it - it's unfortunate that he thinks this way because he was offended, and not because he realized it was a fairly poor piece of film-making. Perhaps you'd prefer a nice John Grisham novel instead? Obviously when something is translated from one medium to another it becomes an interpretation. Better (and always more interesting) to have a great work or a difficult work translated than ye old page turner (although stanley kubrick and cronenberg have also shown that interesting things can be done with these as well - but its the exception, not the rule).

Cronenberg is fond of responding to the nasayers that if he had made a literal film of naked lunch it would have been 8 hours long, cost 200 million, and would be banned in every country in the world. And you'd probably fall asleep about half way through. Haven't talked to anyone yet who's read naked lunch in one sitting.

Their motivation seems pretty apparent to me, and I have not read the book. Besides, isn't ambiguity a refreshing alternative that puts faith in an intelligent audience as opposed to having everything spelt out for like a moron (hello hollywood...)? When it comes to Ballard, I think I'd rather no attempt be made than a dissappointing one... Ballard, for me, is the reading equivelent of say Autechre, Black Dog, Tom J, etc... Its above and beyond... I've not seen the movie, so I have no idea if it fails to come close to whats presented in the book, but I imagine that quite a bit is lost... aside from using the voices overlays in movies like B.R. or Dune, I just think to much 'thought dialog' (hehehe... that make sense?) is lost... there's so much said in the book that just isn't SAID... Highly Recommended Reader Material : The Best Short Stories of J G Ballard Presented (at least my copy) in a colorful, oversized softcover format with the look and style of a book which is supposed to be hip and alternative... actually, its just plain FUCKED (this is the stuff that SHOULD give you nightmares...)
