Perhaps you'd prefer a nice John Grisham novel instead? Obviously when something is translated from one medium to another it becomes an interpretation. Better (and always more interesting) to have a great work or a difficult work translated than ye old page turner (although stanley kubrick and cronenberg have also shown that interesting things can be done with these as well - but its the exception, not the rule).

Cronenberg is fond of responding to the nasayers that if he had made a literal film of naked lunch it would have been 8 hours long, cost 200 million, and would be banned in every country in the world. And you'd probably fall asleep about half way through. Haven't talked to anyone yet who's read naked lunch in one sitting.

Their motivation seems pretty apparent to me, and I have not read the book. Besides, isn't ambiguity a refreshing alternative that puts faith in an intelligent audience as opposed to having everything spelt out for like a moron (hello hollywood...)?
