My roomate and I have been writing some odd idm music for the last year or two and we've been using an old synth that has been passed down to him through family (don't ask). It's a Juno 106. Any comments as to how good this synth is or how much it may be worth? We might sell it for other newer equipment. -mark --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It is a terrible synth and has a tendency to explode, killing users. You should mail it to me immediately as I am certified for proper disposal of it. :) Anyway, yea, it's a great synth... Check out machines.hyperreal.org for more info on it. -- :: atomly :: atomly@atomly.com | atomly@atdot.org | atomly@cyrus.net http://www.atomly.com | http://www.mp3.com/atomly [CELL|(888)522.3830] | [CELL|(701)729.1631] | [HOME|(651)748.8676] --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The juno 106 is one of those synths that are only popular because people like the chemical brothers and crystal method use them. i've seen people get $600 for them, but that's on a lucky day. personally i think they're shit. most general analog synths bore me with their lack of flexibility and user friendliness. i haven't had much experience with these things, but from the hour + that i played one i know that there's a lot of better synths out there for what you could get for that 106. if you like the analog sound, i'd go with an sh-101, or something along those lines. but that's just what i like. and maybe i suck a lot, and maybe people will send me bad messages because i don't like their synth. but that's the price i gotta pay. foambee@splink.com http://www.splink.com/punkrag/bzrec/ (my record label) http://www.splink.com/punkrag/crtrader/ (cdr/mp3 trading) -----Original Message----- From: Mark <mef@ecst.csuchico.edu> To: idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Date: Tuesday, February 01, 2000 11:39 PM Subject: (idm) A question about synths

Well... What do you guys think of it? It's quite a popular synth that's for sure. Most people who have one insist that there music would not be the same without it. I kind of have a hard time believing there is really that much difference between the older analog synths. They all seem to have that same parameters for sound construction. And, those perimeters weren't that interesting to began with. Mostly the Filters are the big distinguishing factor. If all you want to do is filter movements then you should be in really good hands. I try to look for synths that have other things besides that. Ring modulation, FM, Wave modulation... Stuff like that. On the other hand, Some people might point out that simplicity breeds ease of use and leaves you with more time to write music... So, I don't really have any recommendations. If you listen to Aphex, a lot of his stuff uses really simple 2 oscillator Subtractive synthesis (what you have) and not that much filter movement. At least on his latter stuff. All that rest off that crazy noise is just DSP effects and Computer manipulation. But, the base of it all is really just simple synthesis. Mark wrote:

The Juno-106 is a good solid polyphonic midi workhorse. Its strengths are its midi capabilites: you can record slider tweaks as sysex info. It's not good at strange FX. Decent pads if you have some good processing. I've always felt that the sounds its capable of are somewhat boring, and its modulation options are limited. Its filter sounds like a dog next to the SH-101. It's one of the more popular synths out there though. William Orbit, Autechre like theirs. (many others, just don't know them off the top of my head) Andrew -| Andrew Schrock | aschrock@cs.brandeis.edu |- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

These things are totally worthless (unless you're "the one and only dominator"), not to mention the digital osilators emit deadly radiation, and the whole thing is packed with asbestos that leaks out of the sliders every time you move them! I'll take it off your hands for $100 and dispose of it properly. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| |||||||||Honk if you're Aphex Twin||||||||| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| ||||||Erich C Ward?|||||||||||||||||||||||| |||||||||||||||||||www.mp3.com/dphlox|||||| ||||||ICQ# 55554875|||||||||||||||||||||||| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
