It's nice that you've offered some ideas about where to find this stuff to
whomever asked, but do we really need the moral judgmentalism here?
As long as there has been 'stuff', stuff has been traded second-hand. Way
back to Greek times...maybe even cavemen traded stuff their brothers and
friends made. These musicians are artists, not businessmen. If they want to
argue the point, let's hear it. For my part, I like supporting artists when I
can, but if stuff is offered second-hand, I'm there...why the hell should I
spend more if I don't have to? If I want to support an artist, I will...I
don't need to be told. Perhaps a hundred years from now, we'll look back and
cringe at the fact that we actually asked people for money to hear our music
or read our books. Ugh, what an ugly concept.
It's nice that artists can actually GET MONEY for playing around with their
art, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking they DESERVE it just
because they want it. Don't think for a minute that the Ae boys are going to
lose sleep because we didn't buy their latest LP, but instead traded for it.
And if we're going to start arguing about the relative size of releases and
label-runs, let's at least realize that we're talking business and not art. I
don't need to be told to support an artist just because he's on a small label
that might go belly-up if we don't give them money. Maybe belly-up isn't
always such a bad thing.
The minute you commodify music (and, by association, art), you cheapen it and
change it forever...
I don't mean this as a personal attack. You (Drusca) may or may not think
this deep down and maybe I mistook your words, but your suggestion struck a
chord with me about this subject. Rereading now, my words may sound a bit
harsh in response to what was a generally unobtrusive suggestion, so if you
feel personally attacked, I apologize. I'm not judging you as evil or
socialist or stupid, but this is rather a rant at the way this list has gone
in the last few years. Your mail was just the catalyst.
There's been a lot of outrage recently about CDRs and, before that,
mixtapes...before that it was bootlegs, before that it was copies of tapes
for friends. This is to all those people who get upset because I have a CDR
instead of the 'official' copy of some rare release that they find valuable.
Give up. It's about the music, people, and if you don't understand that
because you see dollar signs...well, then you just don't understand that.
And to whomever sent the original email looking for music, keep it up. We
need more REAL musical content on here and less of the crap that this email
is indicitive of.
