Isn't this typical that somebody with an idea for a business plans everything ("good distribution (25,000), and going full-color/glossy") except paying the people doing the work. If you reply to this you are a sucker. CT

You obviously have no writing experience. First off, she's looking for new writers with a little bit of experience, not professional writers. Professional writers don't get jack as it is, and the only way you start out as a writer is to write for magazines that are looking for voluenteers. I write for her said magazine, and I don't get paid. I've written for magazines that have paid me, and after dealing with all the bullshit that goes along with them, I prefer to write for a magazine that doesn't pay me yet publishes what I write instead of assigning it and then shelving it. The pay for writing is based on a per-word amount, and it's shit unless you write for spin or rolling stone. When I figure out an hourly amount for what I have been paid for writing, it's insulting. I do it because I like it, so it's far more important to me to see it published un-tampered than it is to get a rediculously small check. So if you want to write because you think it'd be a hoot, feel free to respond to her post. If you want to write to make money, heh, you're a fool. C Twomey <newpower@interlog.com> Wrote:

damn. aren't I a SUCKER for making no plans to make $$ off this gig anytime soon -- but rather to invest all the $$ we've got in making the leap to glossy and national distribution, so people all over the U.S. can read about good music. our first priority after the bills is for writers to get paid. then, maybe the editors can think about paying themselves for their hard work... we give our writers plenty of creative space and the chance to get their work exposed. I do this in my spare time because it's fun and i love music. that makes me the biggest SUCKER of them all!! -----Original Message----- From: C Twomey <newpower@interlog.com> To: idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Date: Sunday, November 22, 1998 9:33 PM Subject: (idm) suckers/ writers needed?

I suggest you quit while you're ahead. There are enough people in publishing who aren't doing it in their spare time. Why parallel the rip off of artists in the music production biz by doing it to writers? If you are not going to pay anyone anyway why not just sample the reviews on this list and credit yourself? Oh, and what's the name of this rag that I plan to avoid. Good Music And Martyrdom Monthly? LA Dreamers Review? CT

Time out! Chris has mistakenly suggested (amongst other things) that this said magazine is new. I think it best to clarify a few things before he digs a deeper hole for himself. Last thing I knew, we were talking about 'Fix,' but seeing as it's going through some changes, perhaps the name is going as well. Secondly, I've been contributing on and off for Fix for the last few years. By this point its an extremely well-established mag in the West Coast with a great reputation and a very readable format. Most of all, Fix has one of the slickest layouts I've ever seen. While the content leans more in the west coast breakbeat/techno area, I've been able to squeeze in features on Squarepusher, Taylor Deupree and Luke Slater. I'd definitely recommend checking the mag out in its present form, and I look forward to seeing the new format in the new year. And Chris? Lighten up a bit. Exclaim probably just pays you a token wage so you won't attempt to strangle them and steal their posters. Aaron Excerpts from mail: 23-Nov-98 Re: (idm) suckers/ writers .. by C Twomey@interlog.com

jesus christ, ct -- did your girlfriend dump you last nite or something? i haven't seen such an outpouring of bile on this list since trent reznor bought the us rights to the warp catalog. as someone who makes a living writing about music (and, incidentally, as a former card-carrying shop steward with the united auto workers of america), lemme just say that yeah, i expect to get fairly compensated when i write for a publication that's making money off my labor. but i'm also aware that plenty of publications i write for only got off the ground because there were a lot of eager writers willing to donate their work until the magazine/newspaper became a viable concern (at which point they had every right to demand remuneration). also, there are plenty of publications that _never_ make money, and only exist because the people who produce it are in love with the idea of communicating their enthusiasms to others. i wish i was still young and idealistic enough to pour my energies into something like that, but i sure don't resent those who are. why do you? go piss on someone else's parade. jeff
