This sounds like the classic symptom in Windows of having too much
file buffering... check out

If you haven't been using your computer for hardcore recording, you probably
haven't tweaked it for solid recording... some of these suggestions
will seem to make normal computer operation a little more sluggish,
so it doesn't hurt to use the Windows 'configuration' system so you can
boot to different settings when you're doing audio work...
