From the Uprising column in XLR8R mag. The Aphex Twin's album (has sold roughly) 10,000. (The columnist goes on to say, correctly, that for a MAJOR record label, 10,000 copies is shit). So what is a major label to do? Well, i'll tell you, they've issued a memorandumb to their "street smart" subsidiary labels to cancel any and all Trance/Techno/Ambient compilations... time...space...transmat@teleport.com bleep on!

Which album is this? Selected Ambient Works II, the most recent Aphex Twin album that I'm aware of, is on Warp, which is hardly a major label (unless it was bought by one at some point, but i don't think so.) Cosmic

That columnist was insane. Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works II is a two-CD album. I can tell you that for *any* domestic album that is priced over $16.99 to sell that many copies is good, even by Warner Brothers' book. I remember a few years ago reading that box sets (Stones, Springsteen, etc.) *rarely* sell over 60,000 copies, so compared to them, which only cost $20 more but have an extra CD and are *BIG NAME* artists, 10,000 copies of a double CD Aphex Twin is not so shoddy methinks! Besides, it hasn't been out *that* long, and it's not really getting typical *WEA* support, (record store promotions, sales incentives, developing artists programs like listening booth spotlights, etc.) Basically, I think that the problem is that ambient music has not found its audience yet, and I really doubt that WEA is going to give up on it already... gschmitz@luna.cas.usf.edu

Where does the Aphex Twin come into this? I take it it has something to do with some US licensing deal....? While were on this tangent of record labels, can someone tell me what the label WEA is? What's it's relationship to Warner, and to Eye-Q (if any). It always puzzles me the way some Eye-Q releases (like Accident in Paradise) have the WEA name (and I think the Warner name) on them as well.... Cosmic

In the States, _SAWII_ was licensed to Sire, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Records.

WEA is the huge evergrowing....well, suffice it to say that WEA stands for Warner-Elektra-Atlantic, and represents Warner Bros' international companies. If anything, Eye-Q has some sort of licensing agreement with WEA to produce and distribute its music. WEA *is* Warner-Elektra-Atlantic, a subsidiary of Time-Warner. Any label, no matter how small or *indie*, that is tied to those three labels is also part of Time Warner, the largest entertainment conglomerate in the world. (I think) Because of Wax Trax/TVT's deal with Interscope, Wax Trax can also then be seen as part of this big picture. (I'm honestly not sure how Aphex Twin is related to WEA) gschmitz@luna.cas.usf.edu

I guess the message to be learned is F#CK the majors, for they have tiny minds. Fortunately, there are hundreds of labels putting out electronic dance music worldwide. Something the majors have no clue about. time...space...transmat@teleport.com bleep on!

Yep! I can't believe they're going to cancel EVERYTHING...based on ONE thing. It could have been due to bad promotion or some fault of theirs that made it not sell... this is where the debate comes in about whether it's the demand of the consumers or the money/promotion/etc put behind stuff from the labels. I'd say this is an example of a major label setting an unjustified 'standard' by saying "techno/trance/ambient is dead." This is how the desire for profit kills creativity (i.e., the distribution of creativity)... Once the world is online, we can truly say "F#CK the majors.." BTW, Mixmaster Morris in NME (or MM?) mentioning distribution of music over computers.. yes! -djkc "Some of us live for the future..." "This is a shout going out! (into the future)"

The only affiliation TVT has with Interscope is Nine Inch Nails. After a prolonged netotiation with TVT, Interscope purchased NIN contract. In turn TVT must be receiving some nice points and their logo on Trent's records.

Evidently it is finally being released by Virgin (after much squabbling tween Virgin & Fontana) quite soon (don't remember exact date...) Should be interesting.......

I saw the video last night on MTV. I was surprised at how uninteresting the music was. They sure picked a very non-commercial track to promote the album. It was a bit of an anticlimax really. - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se
