thoughts can the flamewars people, please. it's unbecoming. jeff just picked up the Drexciya 4 "double aquapak" on underground resistance and i think it's a really wonderful record. some really fierce electro beats with the usual UR tweaky shit on top. intelligent? fuck if i know. it's electronic, it's futuristic, i like it. good enough for me. just a thought, but maybe idm should become edm... electronic dance music... that would end this petty squabbling once and for all. i wish i had the resources to run a mailing list, cos i'd do it. and mr ashdown, i did say i would join an FSOL list if you made one... i must've sent it when opcode's email was fucked... /jon

Here here! I was hoping someone would suggest this. The term "intelligent" never did appeal to me, as who is to say what is {i} and what aint? "electronic" is a little more cut and dry, and isn't as intimidating to new-comers (like I was in Sept.: "Intelligent Dance? what the f*** is that?"). I think the discussion would become more broad and encompass more genres if we ditched the {i}-word, and I wouldn't feel so bad talking about one of my favorite edm artists, CJ Bolland. Besides, if it weren't for this list (as it exists now), I wouldn't have a clue as to whether I should buy Biosphere or LaTour (gasp!) I, for one, hope that the discussion remains diverse and varied, and I will continue to talk about Bolland, Eat Static, Spooky, Meat Beat, etc; until someone creates the edm list (oh joy of joys!)

I agree we should consider renaming the list, but I have my qualms about edm.

And much too broad, IMO. Gabber and breaks are electronic dance music, aren't they? Why not just reroute all discussion from this list back to alt.music.techno then?

And we disagree as to whether this would be a benefit. If you ask me, the list is too noisy as it is.

Diversity and variety is one thing, losing any concept of what this list is about and why it was created is entirely another.

I have no argument with discussion of any of these artists on IDM. My suggestion for a new name: armchair-techno. The original mission of the list would be retained (and implied more clearly), and a side benefit would be that questions that just about all of us agree are off-topic (turntable cartridges, upcoming Toronto raves, etc.) would be less likely to pop up. As I stated in private email to a few folks, I hope no one took my comments as some sort of attack on this list, or its general content. This forum has turned me on to more great music than I could hope to list, my only regret is that I haven't given as much as I've received. I'm making a concerted effort to post more reviews, but right now my obligations to my employer and friends I owe lots of email to have to come first :) I do think we should consider a renaming, as the phrase "Intelligent Dance Music" grates a little more every time I have to type it... :) As far as the Great Renaming goes, do we want to make a formal proposal/vote thing about this (Fluid?) I'd have to agree that Electronic Dance Music is probably a bit overbroad as a name, but I worry that Armchair Techno would rule out things like the King Tubby stuff that's been brought up today... peace (_really_), ----------------------------------------------------------------- dave walker, detroit art services _ marmoset@msen.com play sim freeke

Um, do you mean it's MADE from the armchair, or LISTENED TO from the armchair? If it's the former, the Gabber is definitely armchair music, too! :) 'electronica' sounds neat. But haven't there been any terms mentioned in magazine articles/interviews of the artists that're discussed in this group? -djkc

On May 20, 6:35pm, you proclaimed: } I do think we should consider a renaming, as the phrase "Intelligent } Dance Music" grates a little more every time I have to type it... :) } } As far as the Great Renaming goes, do we want to make a formal } proposal/vote thing about this (Fluid?) } } I'd have to agree that Electronic Dance Music is probably a bit overbroad } as a name, but I worry that Armchair Techno would rule out things like the } King Tubby stuff that's been brought up today... I don't think Fluid or I ever intended the term "Intelligent" in the name to be anything other than satirical. I don't consider this music more inherently intellectual or "prescient" than specific examples in a lot of other musical genres. In my opinion worrying about the term "Intelligent" in IDM is akin to worrying about the word "Acid" in acid jazz. *It's just a name*. The reason the list was started and the reason it's been pretty darn successful over the past year was because "IDM" described a nice chunk of new dance music that had come out - not too limited as to get no traffic, not too broad as to become alt.music.techno, and rich enough to inspire discussions about where it came from and where it's going. What exact type of music does it describe? That's a very hard question to answer, and in my opinion one that's better left unanswered. We have reference bands - AFX, the AI series, Warp releases, etc. - and anything anyone feels that people who enjoy the above would also enjoy should be encouraged. If there is interest in starting a house music list, I'd be willing to open up techno.stanford to it. Send me mail if you are interested, and/or you'd be willing to maintain it, and I'll consider it.
