Hey Loving a lot the few tracks from krs one I know and some stuff like Dalek (DHR), I was wondering if there is a sub-genre of hip-hop involving these kinds of heavy or even distorted beats? something like ***industrial hip-hop***? I know there is something called crunk from the south of the usa, but I don't know yet if it is what I am looking for... cyrill. --------------------------------- New Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. Which KRS are you listening to? Recent or old? A lot of old school beats (Schooly D, "Smoke Some Kill") have some distorted beats, though that's all relative, considering how distortion has changed over the past 15 years. If you're talking the heavy sub-bass type stuff (Miami Bass), then crunk may be what youre looking for. -----Original Message----- From: ===> <cduneau@yahoo.com> To: idm@hyperreal.org Sent: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 03:31:00 -0800 (PST) Subject: [idm] hip-hop sub-genre? Oh it's an old one. and yes, with this kind of distortion often called vintage warmer or tape/tube when it comes to effects... (oops. talking like on the idm-making list...) But more contemporary stuff would fit me too, it is just that i do like some hip-hop tunes, but as i have no clue about this genre i often come up with crap when looking for some music. i am not into swimming-pool/benz commercials, nor r'n'b stupid choirs, if you see what i mean... ;-)) cyrill. doopeyduk@aol.com wrote: Which KRS are you listening to? thanks for the answer. second time in the day that this Lil Jon pops out, so i think i gonna head this way first... c doopeyduk@aol.com wrote: Well, then, Id suggest anything with marley marls name on it (producer extraordiare back in the day). Also Gangstarr. DJ Premier is the king of these grimy beats. They are also pretty consistent. Schooly's "Smoke Some Kill" is excellent for those insane soundiing beats (including a goofy remake of led zeppelin's "Kashimir"). If its modern crunk stuff, I'd suggest Lil Jon and the East Side Boys. TI, Pastor Troy,David Bannner the Yin Yang Twns, etc etc. All commercial stuff, but it bangs. As far as non-commerical stuff, i'd start with anything by OUTKAST. Their most recent album was okay, but the four before that were dumbfoundingly good, the best being "Stankonia" in 2000. Also, id try some stuff by Anti pop consortium. tony green -----Original Message----- From: ===> To: idm@hyperreal.org Sent: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 04:20:40 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: [idm] hip-hop sub-genre? The first Wu-Tang Album "Enter the 36 Chambers" is purely genius. The RZA's production on that album is often overlooked. The way he manipulated samples on that record back then is insane. In a way its still ahead of its time. Check it if you havent already. On 3/27/06, ===> <cduneau@yahoo.com> wrote:

As far as a whole genre of this type of music (as mentioned in the original post) try some grime/garage/dubstep/our sound (as described on the Destructive comp. LP of the same name). Virus Syndicate (with production work by Mark One) is a good jump off point. The Grime comp's put out by Rephlex are a good start (but don't have MCs). While I'm on this list - check out my radio show tomorrow/Wednesday at 11PM EST (-5:00 GMT) on www.wesufm.org. I'll be interviewing Drop the Lime and most likely this topic will come up. He has a video for his E Lock track that is somewhere on the tigerbeat6 site. It's fun and definitely grimey.
