Considering the 20 or so CD's I order a week I think it's well near impossible to narrow it down to 10 albums for all of 2004. Instead, here is a preliminary list of 20 albums that were streamed on StaticBeats during the past year that continue to get heavy playback in my car, at home, and at work. Much of this list has been culled from the archives: http://www.staticbeats.com/update/albums.php edIT - Crying Over Pros for No Reason (Planet Mu) Arovane - Lilies (City Centre Offices) Helios - Unomia (Merck) Stendec - A Study of 'And' (Expanding) Mr. Projectile - Sinking (Merck) Adam Johnson - Chigliak (Merck) Erast - Goodair + Minimissing (Laboratory Instinct) Claro Intelecto - Neurofibro (Ai) Ai Records - Station (Ai) Beans - Shock City Maverick (Warp) String Theory - Radiovalerian (Wobblyhead) Home Video - Citizen EP (Warp Records) Himuro - Clear Without Items (Couchblip!) Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (XL) Freeform - Wildcat (Skam) Marshall Watson - The Time Was Later Than He Expected (Highpoint Lowlife) Blockhead - Music by Cavelight (Ninja Tune) Wagon Christ - Sorry I Make You Lush (Ninja Tune) Shadow Huntaz - Corrupt Data (Rephlex) Headset - Space Settings (Plug Research) There's probably about a hundred more that'll come to mind over the next couple weeks but this is what I could come up with during the 30 minutes I've taken from my job to write it up ;-) Shimone/Justes http://www.staticbeats.com Electronic Music > Digital Culture http://www.boomboombap.com First Come > First Heard --- Greg <cameron69@comcast.net> wrote:

heres my top of 2005. autechre - untitled (warp) boards of canada - the campfire headphase (music70/warp) prefuse73 - surrounded by silence (warp) biosphere - dropsonde (touch) greg davis + sabastian roux - paquet surprise (carpark) these were pretty much the only 'idm' -ish type albums i was feeling this year, i had this tendency throughtout 2005 to regress to the idm/experimental electronic music of yesteryear, that said my list only consists of those 5 magnificant, enjoyable albums. ^_^ - junr.

Request to make this more interesting: as well as just listing records, can we get a 'why you liked them so much'? eg Ø - Kantamoinen (sounds like nothing I've heard recently, very synths but atmospheric and emotional) Unknown - Grim Dubs 1, half of 2, and 3 (dark, atmospheric, energetic, bass heavy awesomeness) Izu vs The Andies split 12" (particularly the Andies' extended stream of consciousness squelch oddessy, but basically for taking IDM back to the days when it was 95% inspiration and 5% polish rather than vice ve3rsa) Skream - Midnight Request Line (4 tha dubstep massive) Animal Collective - Feels (for sheer bounceyness!) Pendulum - Hold Your Colour (guilty pleasure time) Boris vs Merzbow - Sun Baked Snow Cave (NOISE!!!!!!) I think some of those might actually be from 2004, some of them definitely aren't IDM, but they're all things I've got into this year... Ahoy! Ditto on the Books! Not IDM per se, but of interest to all who ought to be interested and are, and more. Understated, under-rated, nary a whiff of trendy, just pure wild fun and love of sound - flat out genius. All their records. Along with Kallikak Family, Animal Collective, and Six Organs of Admittance, some of the brightest (as in opposite of "dim") music this, and last, and the year before, or several... IDM-wise, I'd have to tip the yarmulke to Monolake (again), Venetian Snares (again), Autechre (again), Amon Tobin (again), and on into the blurry pop fur lined automat of Dntel, Four Tet, Apparat, Solvent, Styrofoam, The Postal Service, Figurine, The Notwist, Hood, Lali Puna, Caribou, Minotaur Shock, Tarwater, etc, etc, etc. Lots of good, especially at the boundaries - hard to say "best" though. For people who like making recommendations and making lists of things they like... Have you seen http://bookswelike.net/ ? It's pretty neat, though it's pretty new and has some bugs here and there, and is mostly unrealized potential as of yet because there aren't tons of people using it yet. I've been enjoying recommending and making comments on some IDM albums, It'd be neat if a bunch of electronic music heads showed up and participated. Mind you, I got nothing to do with the site, it's just another way to waste time, so far. Have fun, or don't. Oh, and here's my favorites from 2005 (not all IDM): EPS AFX - Analords (most of them, downloaded, I'm bad) ...Not every track is wonderful, but enough is excellent enough to make you cry for the good old days Yard - Bloom [narita] ...Some of the best dance stuff I've heard in a while, give it a shot ALBUMS Freeform - Outside In [skam] ...funky and unique, musically diverse, Freeform's always a trip Lackluster - Slice [u-cover] ...Esa, you rock my world MIA - Arular [xl] ...making rap/hiphop different/electric enough for me to enjoy it Saint Etienne - Tales From Turnpike House [sanctuary] ...magic pop, perfect music, nostalgia for a life I'll never lead Broadcast - Tender Buttons [warp] ...better than all their previous work, simpler, more concentrated, reduced to essence Solvent - Elevators And Oscillators [ghostly intl] ...so good you don't notice it's practically the same song over and over Fischerspooner - Odyssey ...so shoot me, I thought it was good, simple synth-pop Secede - Tryshasla [sending orbs] ...I still want more non-ambient Secede, but this was outstanding ambient music Autechre - Untilted [warp] ...the one, the only, the classic, still the best The Devlins - Waves ...good solid songwriting, you don't get this much anymore. RUNNERS UP Fell - Between Octavia and Laguna [enpeg] ...keeping dub alive Yunx - In The Heat Of The Night [ai] ...Haven't had time to listen to it enough, but it's very polished and I like it so far Blamstrain - Remixed [merck] ...an enjoyable set of remixes, I want more Blamstrain! Quark Kent - Meschqui [enpeg] ...a surprising, inventive little glitch-IDM release -Adam Piontek damek.org

quoted 1 line Lots of good, especially at the boundaries - hard to say "best" though.>>Lots of good, especially at the boundaries - hard to say "best" though.
Perhaps this dearth of anything "best" reflects our collective listening habits nowadays. Time was when I'd have been delighted to have heard 3 or 4 favourite albums in a given year. Nowadays, as I've found my listening preferences broadening ever further into a so much less "tidy" mess, my willingness to feel compelled to tip my hat to a single release as my favourite has diminished. Add to this the amount of online content from yesteryears that I'm only hearing now for the first time and it's not too hard to become a little apathetic as to what's "favourite" round my ear lobes. I'm bobbing expectantly (or swooning narcosis-like) to far too much "good" material as to be unwilling (or unable) to put my finger on anything that's "best". The one pity however is how readily I've become willing to dismiss music that doesn't fit the criteria that it should engage my attention upon first listening. With so much music in the marketplace nowadays there's little or no time to indulge that which doesn't immediately sate the appetite but which could go a long way towards enriching your listening habits should it have been given a more thorough inspection. Which, in my case, accounts for why I listen to less and less "IDM". In a way I think it's interesting that my listening to IDM should suffer/stagnate as a result of the ability to test drive ahead of purchase, i.e. broadband technology + digital music providers = resurgence in hippy folk forms and post punk/hardcore nostalligators ! Is it (IDM) being bitten in the tail by that which it is (technology is killing technologically innovative music forms) ? Which all goes to make this word of mouth format (the list) of such importance in resuscitating my interest in the form and revealing its hidden secrets to me which it periodically still does... IF we could ever get past talking about the (yawn) Bored of Canada or Aphex Twin ?!? |---------+----------------------------> | | wobbly | | | <spacewalker@juno| | | .com> | | | | | | 20/12/2005 07:01 | | | | |---------+----------------------------> >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | | | To: Brian.Power@cso.ie | | cc: idm@hyperreal.org | | Subject: [Possible Spam] Re: [idm] top 2005 | >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| Ahoy!
