I have some questions. #1 I'm a DJ/producer/promoter trying to bring experimental "higher quality" music/art to a relatively culturally dry area. The lower Rio Grande Valley, TX. I'm basically building a scene from scratch. I know some of you out there must have experience in scene building and interest generating. I'm desperate for suggestions. Everything from creating the right atmosphere, to guerrilla marketing techniques. Any help is appreciated! #2 I've been DJing for around 5yrs or so. I'm pretty eclectic in my taste; spinning everything from Stan Getz to Squarepusher, from Blackalicious to Venitian Snares, From Danny Elfman to Nina Simone. My staple is DnB, Click Hop, and Industrial. First my statement; I still, after all these years, have the hardest time beat matching. Sometimes I get it. Most of the time it drives me insane. Am I the only one with this problem? Is it like being color blind? Is there any thing I can do about it? zach http://www.myspace.com/jazzadelic (collective) http://www.myspace.com/wwjimd (personal) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Fishhead: ***good luck... sometimes all the talent in the world can't help get that sort of enterprise off the ground.*** Zach: I hold the belief that anything that doesn?t violate physical laws is possible given the right technique, enough energy, and time. Then again even those physical laws are kinda warbly given the right drugs! *smile* Thanks for the other advice, it is appreciated. I'm writing it all down in a notebook! Fishead: ***concentrate more on developing techniques beyond simply beatmatching...a large part of DJing is adapting to suit the music... if you can incorporate cuts, juggles, scratches and such - then you're not as reliant on a single tool*** Zach: I completely agree, this is what I have done thus far, and I'm pretty darn good at all of the above if I may toot my own horn for a bit. I want to get good at beat matching for the sole sake of adding another tool to my inventory. I don't believe I can have too many. I'll check out your mix. BTW Amon Tobin's "Four Ton Mantis" goes superbly with Tool's "Sober." I love your name. Thanks again for the advice. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Ableton Live 5 will beatmatch for you. Some people use Ableton Live to DJ. You set warp markers and Live's granular timestretching does the rest (more or less). Live 5 apparently improves this facility by an order of magnitude, and throws in MP3 support (something it's never had) as well. cheers w --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hmm, I have not tried 5 yet, still using 3. 3 will not beat match everything, the loops need to be properly spliced, preferably a full bar or two, otherwise it won't sound right. On Jun 14, 2005, at 10:10 PM, wallace winfrey wrote:

I've heard DJ sets from peeps using Ableton 4 or earlier (I think), but after giving the demo version a try I wonder how they really do this. Do they sample & cut all the tracks to WAV to be able to play them in Ableton? That's the only way I saw it possible... -- "progress doesn't come from early risers progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things" http://n3wjack.blogspot.com http://www.jungletrain.net - 24/7 dnb radio station --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yeah, that's pretty much it. you have to prepare everything in advance, and cutting / converting to wav takes a lot of the improv away from your set. abelton 5 should hook it up something fierce. -xnlb On 6/15/05, n3wjack <n3wjack@gmail.com> wrote:

Well, I spent some time and wrote up my thoughts and and an actual tutorial last night but I was fairly baked and managed to overwrite the window by clicking on an external link. My last line was to say oh yeah, I've actually got this video I recorded of a set I mixed a few years back but when I clicked on the video I was prompted to install RealPlayer and it launched my browser :( So here it is --> 450K Real Video / 256MB http://www.staticbeats.com/breaks.rm Right-click to download as I don't imagine I encoded it for streaming. Pretty boring video but the mix is alright and you can scrub between tracks to skip to the mixing parts. We got our own scene we built from scratch in the unexpected locale, grand rapids michigan. The site is more towards the art market, but there is some stuff from events. have a look: http://www.idealcollective.com Beat matching advice, Try to mix a set within the same genre and similar tempo. Keep doing this until you get good doing specific sets, ie, a few industrial sets. record your mixes to hear your mistakes, erase them until you got something special to save. --maybe you should get a metronome >:D On Jun 14, 2005, at 12:39 AM, Z Moser wrote:
