Lately, I've been getting into Ricardo Villalobos' Alcachofa. I don't know if you can really call it disco... I guess people would call it "microhouse" or something, but its most certainly soulful and has some nice IDM nuances. Yeah, that's a great record. The single, "Easy Lee," is just a total jam. -- :: atomly :: [ atomly@atomly.com : www.atomly.com ... [ atomiq records : po box 805319 chicago il 60680 : 312.804.5389 ... Hey everyone, I usually tend to lurk on here rather than post, but I have to make some decisions and I thought I'd consult the listmembers for their opinions. I'm currently in Toronto, studying Musicology at U of T, and I've been accepted in a number of places in the states for my PhD work. I'm planning on doing my dissertation work on EDM communities and cultural/aesthetic value, so I'm very interested in finding a location that has a good school AND a few vibrant scenes. So do any of you have any opinions on NYC, Chicago and/or Philly? What sort of scenes are strong? How open are the scenes to new people? I spent a few years close to Chicago, but that was in 97-98 and I"m sure things have changed a lot since then... thanks! Luis-Manuel Garcia P.S. If anybody's interested, I have a yet-unpublished paper on The Soft Pink Truth available to download from my website. contact me and I'll give you the URL and the username/password. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hey Luis, I actually got my undergrad degree from U of T (in engineering though, not musicology). But anyway, I've heard the music scene in Philly is quite good (certainly better than Boston, where I am now). Talk to the guy that runs the SoundList mailing list (he has a lot of ties with the folks in the Philly scene). But in all reality, Toronto is an awesome city. I'd love to still be there, but I was forced to leave. :( Good luck! -- Adam "satyam, shivam, sundaram" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

hey there, being in philly and having been to toronto for a week this past summer, i'd say you'd be better off staying in toronto over coming to philly. unless you're like a superhuge Flowchart fan, or you're dead set on catching alot of Flyers, Phillies, Eagles, or Sixers games on tv, or you smoke alot of weed, or you like the dirty ghetto vibe. the scene prolly looks more vibrant from the outside, but honestly, the "idm" scene is kinda wank- you got one monthly for experimental and blip-pop and chillout stuff (ours), then you got your spacecase wacky west philly dark ambient and any weird shit goes type monthly for the lurker types, then a dropping of tech-house events, some deep house stuff, but for the most part philly is for indie rock hipsters who dye their hair black and i dunno what the hell else. oh yeah, hip-hop and thug life. not to mention the city's like a million years old and crumblin'. and south philly smells like fish and ass mixed together. in closing, i go to Hotlanta and i'm like, "damn we suck!". i go to Toronto and i'm like "damn we suck". i go to NYC and i'm like "damn we suck!". as for most of the rest of the dirty south, i'm like "damn this sucks!". so, you know, it's all relative. but yeah, philly is half as cheap as nyc rent-wise. but you get what you pay for i guess. if you like slumming it, and straight rudeness... philly might be the spot for you. there's a pretty large deep and tech house scene here, but its all during the week. weekenders bring more money, so places like soma and moda put on dj's who spin the humpty dance and michael jackson to please the out-of-towners. john schenk (or however its spelled) is supposed to be the new curator for some bar on east market, which will guarantee some decent stuff. are you part of the crowd that throws the monthly with sean? if not, that makes a whopping 2 idm monthlies. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

A fantastic CD... Can't stop listening to it... And I also want to add Metro Area in this thread, they are producing great disco/electro/house (?) music. You know what though, It seems as if no one in Philly puts alot of effort into it. Unfortunately I live in south jersey, but I used to play for a while in an electronic night called Slipping into Sublimnity, For quite a while we had great turnouts, and, while I guess the more ambient nature of our sound brought alot of indie types, we still had alot of support. I played with a table full of electronics, before I bought my powerbook. I have never been able to catch the Holgram events (thats you right?) but I know if really been going for a while now. Do you get a good crowd? It seems even 3 or 4 years ago there was more of a community. We had Funkstorung come through, Geom, Accelera Deck, Prefuse 73, Plaid, Autechre played Princeton, etc. Now I never hear of any one decent coming through. Now everyone skips philly and plays elsewhere. I think we need something to get more people out, like a laptop jam night or something like that. If philly electronic musicians knew of each other more, we'd be able to pull more off. jpb

I live in Philly. Although I am somewhat reclusive, I do seek out shows and events online. I rarely find anything worthwhile. Philly seems to have a very strong ebm/industrial/synthpop/electroclash scene, but nothing that I'm interested in. I was sorely disappointed upon moving here. Again, my view could be a bit skewed since I don't get out much...but please let me know if you happen to find anything! I'd go to that laptop battle but I'm 20, and the venue is 21+. That could be the problem, too. NYC seems to have a *lot* going on. The laptop battle sounds descent, but the performers are already set. I had more in mind something open ended, something for people to meet, play, discuss, enjoy each others work. There is an event like this in london I think, and its wildly successful. I'm sure there's quite a bit of experimental musicians in Philly who'd come out, besides those just there for the music. There are a million coffee house that host music, and also art galleries/spaces that could host such events, allowing those under 21 to attend. jpb

John Schenk's selections should be great. What bar is this at? I used to play in a live ensemble with him at the 700 club. He has great taste in music. Does anyone have a contact for John? I lost his number, and I don't think he has an email address, but if anyone thinks otherwise, let me know... jpb

i dont remember where it was. he told me about it at a funkshun function (i cant help but shake my head at that) a few months ago, saying it'd start some time in the earlier part of this year. these guys (http://www.galacticfunk.net/) should know how to get ahold of them. i saw him play with them in the middle of last year. check out their stuff or go see them play if you get a chance, too. they're not too shabby. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
