Hello people out there. A few days ago I somehow put Joey Beltram "Aonox" into my player and caught myself realizing that probably 95% of all IDM that I got recently to listen to is rather positive (if not to say bright/good/happy). And as my mind at the moment is demanding something much less sweet, closer to the real taste of life, darker and not-positive or even negative, I started looking through my collection. Well (from what I know), so far I can name only Autechre DRAFT 7.30 which is just perfect, VSnares in some cases, Plastikman of course...And then I stop :-/ Is it true that most of IDM is reaching our ears in positive-mood format or I just wasn't lucky enough to know the dark side of idm? Any ideas? Peace, M. _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. my 2 cents, without reading the comments/responses of others (yet) is that the 'idm' genre, kind of by default, includes a lot of the more experimental electronic pop (such as the stuff put out by morr/city centre offices/darla & others) which is often a bit too non-conventional to fit into other genres (hip-hop, downtempo, house)... and is essentially happy (sometimes sad) poppy music - but very very electronic nonetheless. the best example I can think of is boards of canada, who do mostly straightforward downtempo instrumental hip-hop, but it's all a bit too tonal for the 'downtempo' set and certainly doesn't fit into the cafe-del-mar 'chillout' style that is (hopefully) on its way out. so we call it 'idm', which is as good as any other name, i guess. at the same time, there's still a great deal of dark, noisy, intellectually dense 'idm' out there - one only needs to look at artists like autechre, phoenica (practically everyone on the schematic label), black dice, venetian snares, push button objects (tho his new album is mellower), while, beta bodega, and probably a host of others (i'm not as well-versed in idm as i'd like to be) including, of course, aphex twin (his new ep is pretty aggro), squarepusher, etc etc etc... personally, i've been feeling the early pbo stuff lately, and the new caural ep... ./wil m. Get Chris Clark's new album "Empty the Bones of You." Very dense and mechanical. There are some brief "pastoral" melodies but the rest is rather ominous. Oh yeah? How is that caural ep? Zach was nice enough to send me a copy of his first album in exchange for a dub of "maxima" and I really dig it now that I gave it a chance to grow on me. I particularly like the guitary-bits, and the balloon sound, and, err, well that's just the one song, but there are other good songs on that album too. So how is it? And I'm changing the title because I *am* in a good mood and would love to find some modern happy music outside the normal circles. I've been busy encoding all of my CDs to OGG and I found my old cylobian sunset album (w/ diof '97 tacked on) and *really* get a kick out of "instant shrink." Quality stuff, but I don't have a lot that's like that. Simple and pretty without being too saccarine (like Plone). I have his remix album and The Wolves Hollow, although I recall the wolves hollow to be mixed rather annoyingly -- the highs were a bit piercing and loud, making it somewhat annoying to listen to. I don't know if I'm alone on that perception, though... For other marumari fans on the list (and feel free to change the topic accordingly), how do the other albums rate? do they have the same piercing highs that unfortunately ruin some stellar tracks? Or do I just need to bash my eardrums a bit more to really enjoy it ;D derek -- eggytoast.com -- eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

get digitalis on liquefaction empire if you can still find it. best up tempo sortahappy isan song ever is on there -- Zip Left, Zip Right. I love Lucky Cat too. It works really well as an album I think, but it's full of sad melodies. not exactly positive. also in the running for best isan song ever is their remix of Multiplex on the "Mixt" cd comp on senton recordings. a beautiful, sweetly melancholy tune. the rest of the comp is good too. I think he seems to want to revisit the 80s through his production. An attractive proposition at first glance, but on the whole rather worrisome. Biscuit tin drums battering their way through a stringy reverbmurk used to get me off fine, but that was when Simple Minds Rooled ;-) As I said, I do understand its compelling qualities (a bit like death by chocolate or sticky toffee pudding ;-)). Personally, I like to play two tracks off the album (starting with track 4) and then take it off. I feel less bloated that way. alan On Thu, 9 Oct 2003 07:09:17 -0700 (PDT) Anne Whillance <a_whillance@yahoo.com> wrote:

This sounds like an appropriate diet. The new one seems to be a bit more treacly than "far away trains" but maybe it's just longer. I have a hunch its mastered a bit strangely too, which might overemphasise the sweeps and sleigh bells. The effect I'm talking about is especially noticable on "Clear Day", about 4 minutes in. When I'm listening in my car, the midrange sounds like its overdriving my amps and fuzzing out, but other tracks and other CDs sound fine. -- Eric Sorenson - EXPLOSIVE Networking - http://explosive.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Schnauss!!! Schnauss, I say!! This man is restoring my faith in electronic music. DSP hackery be damned- finally, songwriting is back in electronics and I love to swim in those synthwashes. Anybody can run a gabba drumloop through Audiomulch but can they make a song rock like "In All The Wrong Place?" I'd go to war in defense of the Schnauzer. P.S. You can't tell me that those general-MIDI sleighbells didn't make your scrotum draw up and the hairs on your neck stand on end the first time you heard them. It's easy to make fun now.

While possessed of a strangely compelling quality, I trust John's post does not represent the Thin End Of The Wedge. Gratifyingly perhaps, the relative critically-oriented movements of listees' scrota at the moment of IDM-driven auditory impact have to date remained unscrutinised, or at least, if they have, they remain undocumented. Scrotally speaking, we are dealing with a lacuna. That said, the spirit of inquiry cries out for a female perspective (Anne? Irene?) on the SEM (scrotal evaluative mechanism) rating method. alan On Thu, 9 Oct 2003 10:22:24 -0700 (PDT) John Counts <polycyclicism@yahoo.com> wrote:

Hmmm, the scrutinised scrotum... (what exactly is the plural of Scrotum anyway? Scroti? Scrot~a~ looks wrong... a male thing shouldn't end on an 'a' ;-))

Since I'm being called on, I have to say that I do not have Ulrich Schnauss' latest output and am only familiar with Faraway Trains, which I thoroughly LOVE. Goosebumps and pleasant shivers? YES! I too hanker after the Golden Age of IDM circa 1994, where melodies reigned and balming synth washes were the order of the day. We had a rewarding thread going some years back regarding "Songs that Make You Cry" and there are certainly fewer coming out these days that grab me on such a strong emotive level as, say, Carl Craig's A Wonderful Life. Listening to Metamatics "Man-Q-Neons" off Midnight Sun Pig at the moment and that does have such sweet qualities. I suppose that makes sense. The few Toytronic albums tended to be that way when I listened to them, although I don't recall much yelling out to me at the time. That, of course, can change with time, so I should give those another listen.

Yeah, some 5 or so years ago I snagged a giant .zip of a bunch of his .mod tracks and a few of those have trickled on to his later albums (I have boku mo wakaran and samurai math beats).

I have his track "The Snowstorm _ Two Moods" off the Autumnature compilation on Greg Davis' label, and yeah, that is a good track (although a bit long in the tooth towards the end despite starting off really strongly). I find some of David Kristian's music positive. "Cumberform" on Music From The Mermaid Room is a good example, if you like Boards of Canada etc. His ambient music is much darker though. I also quite like Casino vs Japan, King of Woolworth and Ulrich Schnauss. I guess this is more melodic than "positive" IDM, but if it makes you happy... I have the old Metamatics "02" "03" and "04" on Clear, but haven't followed the more recent output. How does it compare to the older sound? Thanks for teh rest of your list and the links, though. Plenty of the names looked familiar from compilations and the like so I have some starting points. derek -- eggytoast.com -- eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Done. order being placed on forced exposure now (along with some other stuff mentioned). I'm a bit behind in the more recent stuff anyway). Looking through some of the other stuff I've gathered, there's a few tracks by colongib on a few compilations, notably the track "Move Bed Here." Again, how do the albums/eps compare? derek -- eggytoast.com -- eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I only have one of the releases on clear and I believe their sound has matured substantially since then. There's a lot more going on in their songs now - much deeper and more developed. I should point out that "their" sound is now "his" sound. Metamatics used to be Lee Norris and Claire from Clear/deFocus, if i remember correctly. but now, it's just Lee Norris. the best Metatmatics, far and away, is Midnight Sun Pig on Dot. Fantastic, tight, sparse drum programming combined with wickedly playful, sometimes goofy melodies. a VERY cheerful album. Death to Passwords... is good, but it can't touch the Pig. Death is also a bit more ambient, and frankly a bit more sad, in many respects. i don't really think of it as a cheerful album, so much. Hey, on that same link is mention of Octopus Inc. I recall getting a kick out of a few of their tracks. What's the rest of *that* like? octopus inc's CDs are both great, with a preference for his first one _mere things & mindless creatures_ which has a beautiful sonig-like vibe & an uncommonly sparse production... his follow-up _fluid freedom_ has great moments too. have a nice day ~ david --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
