just back from seeing Autechre at Bowery Ballroom, NYC. Rob Hall, the tedious opener, chased the crowd downstairs for a few drinks. Then Autechre came out and played some pretty good (and occasionally great) music, but they never managed to electrify the crowd, which wound up talking loudly through most of the set (one could construe that to mean that the music wasn't loud enough, I suppose). After a couple of things with a surprisingly straightforward techno underpinning, they settled into their patented random time-signiture onslaught. there were too many songs of similar character and intensity -- drum heavy, uptempo. it was easy to glaze over. The few times the crowd roused to cheers happened at a couple of points where they finally switched to a slower groove. nonetheless, if one closed one's eyes, there was plenty going on, more riches than one could keep up with at times. no one does it quite like them, despite routine allegations to the contrary. would have been happier closing my eyes in a more comfortable and intimate space than Bowery Ballroom, but what the hell. k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Autechre is amazing, and I'm not just being a die hard fan. After hearing the show on Friday, I went back and listened to Amber- I find that it sounds simple now. I think there is a phenomenon that happens with their music- it can either sound orderd, wiht layers building upon layers, or they can sound very chatoic. I've been to shows that sounded chaotic to me, and very clear to other people. The show on Friday was very clear to me, and chaotic to some other people I was with. You have to pay attention and not miss the hook- if you are listening then you can fall into the fold and hear apparent and playful patterns. The show on Friday was dark, and moody, and tight as hell. Rob Hall is one of the smoothest dj's ever, and his label is amazing. Mad props. Russell Haswell's set on Friday was simply obnoxious, to the point of making me dizzy-his set today at Princton was a bit more ordered- but he managed to blow away the other cover bands playing on the neighboring lawns with brazen abstract noise. That was awesome- everyone from the neighboring show was turned around as if to say "what the fuck"- as their cover band struggled to compete fort heir attention. Everyone was riveted to the meteor shower of electronica. So funny! Autechre rules- if you can't hear it- then you are missing the point. You should just leave, and come back later. -----Original Message----- From: Kurt Hoffman [mailto:supine@bway.net] Sent: Saturday, May 05, 2001 12:33 AM To: IDM List Subject: [idm] Autechre at Bowery Ballroom just back from seeing Autechre at Bowery Ballroom, NYC. Yeah, this pretty much sums up night one. My biggest complaint with the venue was the sound system. The bass only existed as a diffuse thudding sound that obliterated a lot of the high end detail and made it almost impossible to enjoy with earplugs (think dinosaur stomping on Dixie cups). Between this and being continuously jostled/stepped on/poured beer upon made it sort of difficult to follow the boys once they cut the moorings loose and started to navigate through more oblique territory. The early part of the set did pretty much affirm their reputation as rhythmic virtuosoes & I imagine that the latter part was equally rewarding, especially to those who possess the Boulezesque ability to comprehend the most difficult music in one go. Unfortunately, I did not rank among their number that night. By the way, I couldn't help but notice that David Byrne (dressed in full-on suburban dad mode) checked out an hour into the set. This means that we're much smarter than him, right? -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm going to the ae show at the El Rey on May 19th and I had a couple of questions. Would you suggest a person who would actually like to listen to the music and not just hear the bass wear earplugs? I ask because they're kinda silly and uncomfortable. Also, does the El Rey have a bar? Can you smoke there(cigarettes)(And before you say anything, I only smoke when I drink)? I was thinking about dropping three hits a little while after ae came on stage, is there any place nice to trip around the El Rey? Perhaps a pleasant campus to explore? Being LA I don't suppose it would be wise to stroll about a park in the middle of the night. PEN EXPERS kicks ass!!!! quick review Meat Beat Manifesto - Actual Sounds and voices: I don't know if you could call this idm, but its kind of a fun cd. I'm not much for big beat which this is a little bit , but this is also kind of jazzy. I don't think there are enough quality tracks that are actual full blown tracks. They often feel unfinished. Quality, but not something that has enough to offer to distract me from Confield, and not fun enough to distract me from stuff like Clarence Park and Agony. It might sound like I'm dissing this cd, but I really apreciate the jazz on it. Side note: Its on Reznor's Nothing Label, which is nice, along with Autechre, Squarepusher, and overplaid. Oh, and anyone know where that acid again clip comes from? Orb also used it on the Little Fluffy Cloud track. 3/5 LENTIC CATACHRESIS kicks ass!!!! the el rey has a bar, but it's a fucking ripoff. $6 for a corona. fuck that. they cost 75 cents in TJ. mixed drinks are more expensive and come in a little dixie cup. your best bet is to get trashed in the parking lot, high school days style. no smoking allowed in california, buddy. -j --- "<Insert ubiquitous deep quote from dead guy here>" On Mon, 7 May 2001, Brian M. Yeah, they're silly until you get this sudden hellish ringing in your ears that comes and goes at random intervals a few years later. Not to mention having more trouble hearing your friends speak while walking down the street because of background noise. But seriously, it depends on the earplugs and how good the soundsystem is. I wore plugs for Ae's NYC and Princeton shows and things sounded fine to me. Yea, I guess I will go with earplugs, I don't suppose anyone can recommend a brand or anything like that. The last time I tried to wear them they really sucked ass. They were physically silly and uncomfortable. On Mon, 7 May 2001, Howard Shih wrote:

I'd heartily recommend Hearos. They make multiple variations, but the basic foam ones that look like pink bloated Goldfish crackers are really nice. They're more comfortable than wax or paper, and after having them in for about 15 minutes you don't even notice them, if you "installed them" correctly. I picked up a pack of 4 (two for my ears, two for my girlfriend's) and it was amazing being able to leave the venue, take out the earplugs, and hear everything just like you never went to a very very loud show. If you go to any music store in the area, you should be able to ask about earplugs and get some good recommendations. Most of the music store lackeys will rant on and on about their "custom made" ones which are, of course, the nicest kind, but are about 70 bucks and take a while to get made. They should have a couple styles of Hearos though, and they're pretty cheap (under $5) cheers, /derek At 05:36 PM 5/7/2001 -0600, Brian M. Cass wrote:

For about $250 you can get fitted with a professional set of earplugs. They cut out the frequencies that will fuck with your hearing, while still allowing you to hear what you're listening to pretty well. They don't have the same muffled effect that the store bought ones do. They basically make a mold of your ear so they fit really well, and if you're a DJ you can get them specially made to not protrude out of the ear (ie. so you can wear headphones over top without the headphones pressing the earplug into your ear). Well worth the investment in the long run. Jeff on 5/7/01 6:36 PM, Brian M. Cass at kingmob@nmt.edu wrote:

Go the bathroom, get a slice of toilet paper, separate the plies, crunch each up into a ball, and put into each ear... just not too far in.... (don't want to be responsible for anyone who gets artifacts stuck inside their ears)... Usually, this works me for me as something between wearing earplugs, and wearing nothing. I have no idea how safe it is. And sometimes it doesn't work that well, depending on where you're standing.. and if the sound job is bad anyway.

Yes. Nothing less than $5.00. Woohoo! Hope you have cash.

California is the proud state of the nation that bars smoking inside ALL "public" buildings, period. Maybe one day, Californicaters won't be allowed to smoke in their own living space, but the lawmakers have been a little slow getting to that. But there's a little area outside the El Rey where smokers (usually, half the attendees) cram, rub shoulders, etc. to get their fix. But I don't think they let you DRINK outside in the smoking pit.

Wilshire Blvd. at night is pretty unsubstantial, last I checked. Save it for the beach... or Canter's Jewish deli (open 24 hours a day, except on late night before the Sabbath, where they close for a few hours) while looking at the ceiling. Hey Brian, see you in the *pit*. I'll be the one crowd surfing and slam dancing during the show. If you can't take the heat, move the fuck away. :) (I'll be coming from out of state too, for a convention in L.A.) ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> ======================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

FYI, wadding up toilet paper and sticking it in your ears does more harm than good. It does not block enough sound on its own AND it keeps your ear canal from constricting to keep out excess volume. You might as well set off an air horn in your ear. --- Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> wrote:

As somebody already mentioned, this is not true. In fact, an otolaryngologist recommended this very measure to me if no alternatives were available. I mentioned the above rumor to him and he denied it, saying "[the paper] is better than nothing". I haven't read all the responses to this one, only the most innovative ones, but I dont know if anyone answered the actual question. I personally would not drop acid at the show, because its the El Rey theatre and it kind of sucks and you'll me smooshed next to a zillion people sweating and shifting and constantly trying to push you aside to go get their 7 dollar alcoholic beverage. And no, you can't smoke in there and it is guaranteed that if you do light up, you will be stricken with paranoia of one of those huge WWF wrestling body guards putting you in a headlock and throwing you out. If you do decide to do it anyway, you better have someone watching out for you and get there really early to pick the best spot. Don't do it alone... or else you will freak out. As far as after the show, I dont think there is much to do on acid besides cruise around Hollywood and muse in all the ugly flourescent lighting. Lots of luck, julia

You need to back this statement up. What do you mean by "naturally"? And yes, you can die from an LSD overdose, although the theraputic index is rather high, in the area of 3000 or so.
