i work at kinko's. (for those of you who don't know, Kinko's is a huge-ass chain of copy shops.) all the time, the sound of photocopiers fills the air, masked only slightly by the sound of fans. industrial paper cutters interrupt occasionaly with a scraping sound similar to drilling into wood. its noisy in a quiet way. and so, the other day, i get home from work at 1am, and realize that its too quiet. so i turned on my tap. and everything was cool. same quality of noise. kinda white-noise-ish, but different. anyone know of any other things similarily noisy? thanks, --- Jeremy Axon i like the snow HotBot - Search smarter. http://www.hotbot.com

Maybe not so off-topic, since much of idm (and ambient) blurs the distinction between noise and music. Always found the sound of the A/C to be soothing ambient noise, especially for sleep. However, this effect only occurs if the A/C runs continuously through the night. If the thermostat shuts it off from time to time, those SILENCES would inevitably awaken me. 3

Contrary to you, even in deepest hottest summer, the sound of a free-standing air conditioning unit drives me demented and I seriously cannot fall asleep until I've badgered Tully into reluctantly switching it off... oh, the joys of connubial bliss :-) I *

my girlfriend, before she's muffled out when i press the "disco" eq preset on my sony es cd player the TV, after i yanked the cable out of the input & threw the jerrold cable box off the balcony the dishwasher, when it was jammed on the hot rinse cycle, but all the paint on my pint glasses has burned off. and the rollers (rolling pins to ride on your bike indoors) but it takes so much damm effort. treadmills are just as bad/good. frequent sounds i get as a bonus when the windows are open b/c of where i live: rerouted air traffic right near the SFO airport skunks fighting raccoons and screeching like banchees in the middle of the night. screech owls that sound like someone sweeping the sidewalk all night long. what i miss from when i used to be in the east coast: millions of crickets peeper frogs Monolake's "Gobi the Desert" has fulfilled this fix for me lately. and since i have tinitus (probly was the Swans in '89) silence drives me crazy, so i just try to play new music all the time!

Having a sleeping disorder, I am graced with the ambience of both an in-room humidifier and a CPAP unit. I love the dual drone (I miss the humidifier noise when we travel - the CPAP goes wherever I do) and it also drowns out any noise (people being too loud in the next room when you're trying to sleep, etc.). It's better than Lustmord, even :-) jeff Irene McC wrote:
