I guess you have to define idm first. If you mean the electronic music associated with warp/slam etc in the early 90s then probably. But you could argue some of the European techno from the 80s can fall into the idm category. Since this list was started EXPLICITLY to discuss the music of the Warp Artificial Intelligence series (and related music), and Warp is UK label with primarily a UK roster at the time, yes. Nothing is born ex nihilo; the Warp AI artists were heavily influenced by Chicago House and Detroit Techno sounds that were being imported into the UK in the late 80s, in addition to US hip hop. Yeah - There are a few of us OG's who have been on this list since the early days. I think I subscribed in 1992. This was in a sense largely pre-web and the mailing lists and usenet groups were our main source of info and were thus quite active (I don't think 100 posts / day was rare at peak?). People still physically bought music at a shop, we wore funny JNCO pants and went to parties in polluted abandoned factories like the Packard Plant and P2P didn't really exist. The sub-genres of the year and darling labels (RIP Markant, Musik Aus Strom) have ebbed and flowed but it's always been a source of good dialog with the occasional flamewar. i remember it back then, although i was subscribed using a different email address. a friend put me onto it, there was no web to speak of, i was dialing in through a weird BBS system run from someone's house. weird times indeed :) On 27 February 2015 at 17:11, Jeff Davis <jeff@jeffreyjdavis.com> wrote:
