I just saw Tricky this afternoon, at some filming for a PBS special. If you haven't seen Tricky live yet, phuckin' GO! There aren't many artists who can create a vibe at the most vibeless gig possible-a bright, white TV studio, with seated audience, men in suits, and intrusive cameras. It was nowhere as good as the show he put on in Februrary in a good dark club (2.5 hours....WOW). Still, a good 1.5 hours of music. Highlights included an intense 10+minute version of Vent (meant to close the show I think. they filmed the second half of his show first). Right during Vent some stuffed suit sat down next to me. He didn't know what the fuck to think, and he got up as soon as the song was over, after 12 minutes of squirming uncomfortably. Also, a reworked She Makes Me Wanna Die-without the soaring vocals, instead bluesy funky and very interesting. Plus the random Tricky live rant songs-about money and guns and other excuses for tricky to stand there and shake and scream. Definitely try to catch the PBS series (Philip Glass, david Byrne, plus other lesser lights are all gonna get their hour or half hour). But the tricky Kid takes his songs to a whole 'notha level live-it's just incredibly intense, what can i say? ObIDM???? Dirty Dancing is getting rereleased in thaters August 22, all due to the efforts of Conan O'Brien. 80,000 letters to the studio. Anyway, It's an Inane Dance Movie. Strange but true. Sam aka dj spooky (don't even ask) np: Enter the Wu-Tang-thanks Peter

I saw him a year and a half ago and he BLEW. He was so baked out of his head that he forgot the lyrics to two songs, stopped halfway through, blamed the (hastily formed, I imagine) backup band for his problems, then restarted the songs. He mumbled everything like he was trying to remember something (like maybe the lyrics). Martine was cool, but Tricky kept on messing her up and stepping on her lines, so to speak. It was a big disappointment. But maybe that's because Laika opened for him, and their set was fucking unbeleivable. They had three or four live percussionists onstage and two vibes players while Margaret and Guy played little white casios and some other electronic doodads and they had the whole joint jumping. Tricky's show, by comparison, looked like an unpracticed amateur band trying to figure out what kind of music they're going to play. Sloppy and shallow. It's nice to hear that he can in fact put on a good show. Maybe it just depends on how dusted he is before he steps on stage. When I saw him he probably couldn't remember what city he was in, much less his own songs. -CF

I had exactly the same experience at the Double Door in Chicago. I don't think I've ever been as disappointed with a live performance as I was with Tricky's. He even started a song and was so wasted, he was incapable of finishing it. He publicly humiliated Martine by spewing diatribes at he onstage. Very uncool to bring your personal issues in front of the audience. And he's supposedly a sensitive performer?

Damn. That sounds like a great show to me. Ever since Stiv Bators died I haven't had any wasted performers to look forward to. How many Ian McCullochs does it take to put on a show? One and a fifth.

Was that the NYC Nearly God show? I've heard that was terrible. Anyway, I've heard his record label gave him a talking to, warning him that if he didn't figure out a decent live show he'd alienate half of his fans. Then he shaped up for his next tour, channeling his energy into putting on what I thought was a great show (twice). Also, I'm sure Lollapalooza has taught him how to keep an audience's attention, especially a completely nonreceptive audience. Sam
