Well it was an interesting night. I got there a few minutes before ten. DJ Lewis was spinning but he wasn't as good as I had previously remembered. I did like some of what he was playing but some of it sounded so "this is rave music" to me. I remembered him playing more obscure trippy stuff before and not such heavy driving trance. It all sounded very German to me. Oh well I wasn't there to hear Lewis spin anyway. I think it was a little after 11 when LX and crew came on stage. They started with that damn Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy thing. What a fucking JOKE! I thought it was pretty lame. It wasn't even a real recording of Ren & Stimpy which means that LX must've MADE it! HA! Anyway the real music got off soon enough. They started with a melow track off Terranum and then lead into an incredible version of Towers of Dub which sounded like it went into a bit of Earth(Gia). It was fantastic and got me rockin'. They played the Huge Evergrowing Remix and a very "live" version of Outlands. I say "live" because very often it got very progressive rock with the live drummer and bassist. I imagined Pink Floyd on ecstasy (I hadn't taken any though). When the backup guys got tired or whatever and left the stage to paint a crazy stick man with a tongue, buck teeth, glasses and a penis on this massive 15 foot baloon, LX and the guy on the mixing console (where Thrash always used to be _snif_) got into what sounded like that crazy version of Assassin that's on Live93. They played some bits of FFWD between songs but never totally got into a FFWD track (I don't think). They played Little Fluffy Clouds in the finale (if I remember correctly). I'm sorry about not being more complete about the play list but I was in no mood to train spot. I just wanted to focus on letting the music take me away which it did. I bounced and hooted and jacked all night long. It wasn't all uptempo. In fact it did not start pumpin and then wind down like others reported. It sort of slid all over the place with nice long beatless ambient bits in between. I even remember this wicked beat that came in for a few measures but then dropped out to ambience and never came back which made me feel as if there was a bit of improvisation in the play list. At times I wondered if I was at the wrong show, esp. when it got VERY prog rock and also when there was this crazy old 70's sounding commercial disco track with a male vocal (WHA?) All in all the music was intense and didn't back into a classified corner (being ambient techno) and the lights were pretty cool with kaleidascopic effects and morey patterns. The sound system was a HELL of a lot better than the UFOrb tour. I even got back stage to have Alex sign some of my WAU! Mr. Modo white label promo's. It was a nice night out. Well worth the $20. -robert --> __ _ _ _____ _____ _____ / _\ | || || _ \|_ _|/ _ \ / /_\\ | -- || |_) | _| |_ | (_) | ______________ /______\\____/|_____/|_____|\_____/ ( *electronic* )

throughout the whole show, i kept drawing comparisons between them and PF...so are they the next incarnation or what?

yup, reminded me a lot of the ozric tentacles shows i've been to, actually.

well, i remember it all pretty well (although not in the correct order): little fluffy clouds a huge ever growing pulsating brain (very hard & dancy) oobe (excellent reworking) blue room (again very dancy) towers of dub/earth (gaia) assassin (really hard) valley plateau oxbow lakes montagne d'or occidental (or maybe it was white river junction, i always get those two confused)

yes i thought it was a really nice mix of hard & soft, electronic & acoustic, programmed & live.

i have to rave (pardon the pun) about the lights: fucking genius. probably one of the top 3 light shows i've ever witnessed. one thing i really liked was how each song had its own set of lighting effects. it made it look like there was some real thought behind it. they had 16 dataflashes (really bitchin huge strobes) that they used to incredible effect. my brain was throbbing. however, i definitely think the orb are turning into ozric tentacles... robert mentioned the prog rock feel at times and he is right on the money. not that that's a bad thing - i love the ozrics - but you just might want to take that into consideration if you're some kind of techno snob purist... definitely worth the $20. best orb show i've seen yet (out of 3). -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://www.cyborganic.com/People/jsd

okay. i saw this show and i thought i'd just reply to jon's post to get my thoughts out in the open. this show wiped my brain, transformed me, lifed me to another state of conciousness, etc cue house/trance cliches etc..

me neither, i heard the original, and thought it was great. :)

i had a thought of this about halfway through the show - i've never been a big fan of prog rock but i enjoyed the extensive jamming...

this was the big one. the bomb. i took two hits off a friend's bowl three songs into the set, and this is the track that sent my mind ballistic. there are practically no words to describe it. i went home and listened to it on my copy of _terrarum_ and it's a shame the drums don't last that long on it. I WANT A BOOTLEG.

i thought it was more hard than soft, and i *loved* how fast and hard everything was. amazing, again.

yeah, cause it just creeped right into the mix....

mm-hmm. just ask me about the lights, go ahead. at one point, the overload of herb, music and lights was so overpowering that i couldn't open my eyes... this show was, again, simply amazing, and i am a fan again. mikebee

well i went to sf to go record shopping yesterday, and the orb just happened to be in town... actually i couldn't decide whether i wanted to go or not after all the negative or mixed reactions i've read. i kept remembering my first concert that relied heavily on synths & taped music:new order at the time that 'blue monday' was just released. it was in some dive bar in new jersey and i was bored stiff watching some brits standing relatively motionless in front of a few machines, at one point they left their machines and the music was still playing....i had vowed never to go to another synth concert..and hadn't until yesterday. so was it worth the $20? i guess so. even after having spent quite a lot that day shopping, it was good to finally see them after having missed them several times. on the good side: some of the particular lighting effects were pretty good (esp. those white-light sticks that kept bouncing all over the screen at a faster pace, the bouncing colored rings & the colored circles that moved in alternate directions and grew bigger, and when the single white or colored lights were spinning around in complete circles), the mixes were great (the long ambient intro to little fluffy clouds was my favorite version of this song-which i never liked much because i always found the sample to be annoying, probably because live 105 overplayed this song when it came out, - this version did not make much use of riki's voice & when it did it usually wasn't the complete sample; all the versions of tracks from orbvs t. were much better than the album versions; the warfield theater seemed to a have a fitting ambience for the theme of orbvs terrarvm; we got to hear "Theme from Shaft" by Isaac Hayes (this and Donna Summer's "love to love you baby" were the first records i ever bought) instead of Cameo's "word up," alex didn't get his hair caught in the console ( i was worried for a while that he might), on the bad side: i thought the quality of the sound system was not very good, it was too loud at times ( i was in the balcony for much of it, and during times everyone around me and myself had to hold our hands over our ears- esp.. during high pitch shrieking noises like the time that the women screamed. they had large speakers set up at the left and right edge of the stage, i was very disappointed with this because i was expecting more of a sensurround sound type of thing (with quadrophonic sound :) to get that bouncing back & forth between channels thing , but there was none of that it was completely mono because of how they positioned the speakers & that they had to then get the volume so loud to fill the place with sound; this problem with the sound system also obscured the subtleties in many of the mixes for me so that it did sound like a prog rock band. they also stopped after most songs (the light show ended for each song to) which made it seem more like a rock concert, i was expecting one long continuous mix. some of the lighting effects didn't work well or were just b oring (i liked many of the things projected on the back screen, but you had to sit and stare at them and with all of the equipment and stuff in the way it detracted from the effect. a few of the projection things were just plain boring: the spinning maps were a bore, "orb" spelled out in the insignia of orbvs t. was cheezy. & except for the spinning lights there wasn't much "interactive" lighting, it was all from the stage & projected on to the stage with the exception of the harsh white lights that they kept flashing at a different intervals at the audience (my eyes are still red from these). i was expecting to overwhelmed by the lighting (ie. different colors coming from every direction) rather than either assaulted by it or having to stare at it happen on the stage. also, the t-shirts sucked, they were the dullest looking concert t-shirts i've ever seen. and my final gripe was that a friend told me to go to the party after wards but couldn't get in w/out an invitation & the bouncer was a prick. overall i guess it was a mixed bag, i did enjoy myself. it was certainly much better than when i went to see new order in 1982. oh yeah in addition to the songs someone listed, they did play one of the FFWD tracks for a bit (the one that begins with the "and now it's time for that old familiar favorite.." or however the sample goes. they also played "beams of light" but without pato banton's vocals.

I took acid at the party, and the show was completely amazing, it was like they knew exactly which buttons i had, and how to push them. Those who saw the show sober came away with the same almost indifferent opinion as above, those who took psychedelics proclaimed The Orb as their new gods. When i came home from that show i made a few posts to these lists with this idea: The Orb are a drugs band, plain and simple. they make music to trip to, music to get completely baked to, music for your soul to dance to. It never was strictly just dance music, or electronic dub. maybe 'little fluffy clouds' was, but i think the music has deeper purposes, best enjoyed on drugs. well, i saw them again this weekend. the first three songs i saw sober were decent, nice dancey tracks....pretty groovy stuff. at this point, i took about three or so hits off a friend's pipe. a minimal amount, enough to keep it interesting, or so i thought [i had forgotten about my earlier proclamation]...at this point, the show supernova'd into a throbbing pulsing living entity of music and bass and life...."montagne d'or" was the bomb used to deliver this payload...the end of the song found me *screaming*, astounded at what had just happened, not wanting it to stop. each song was like this, bringing me close to actual *tears of joy* (quit laughing...). This show wiped my mind, and it was a combination of Herb and Orb that did me in. Discuss. mikebee

Mike, I'd have to disagree if what you are saying is that the show cannot be truly enjoyed unless you are on a consciousness-altering substance. To the extent that chemical use opens a door through which your perception is altered/enhanced, however, I do agree. But once this door has been opened, the initial stimuli is no longer precursory to a good mindfuck :) All imo of course. Sami
