Can someone please explain to me why UR and the other Detroit labels are referring to this as a "copyright infringement?" In the US, at least, it is not infringement to cover a song, even without the permission of the song's originator. I agree that it is a slimy, scummy thing to do, and that pressure should be applied to companies like Sony Germany and BMG when they try to pull crap like this (indeed, it caused Sony Germany to give up on the idea), but to call it "blatant copyright infringement" is false. I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, yadda yadda yadda. ObIDM: If you have any affinity for Coldcut and other sample-hackers, and you haven't picked up your copy of Ninja's "No Rights Given Or Implied" CD, I would highly recommend doing so. It looks like it's still available at http://www.ninjatune.com/diggin/ and while it's not cheap, it's a very worthwhile history lesson. -- Adam J Weitzman, NewsEdge Corp. I believe this refers to the initial round of promos Sony Germany sent out, which carried no songwriting credits. These were being sold at retail without royalty compensation to the songwriters, which is, as far as I know (IANAL) illegal, and is, in fact (once again, IANAL) copyright infringement. The substance of the post, though, is that there will be a (hopefully) widely distributed, _legitimate_ (both legally and morally) CD release of the _real_ "Knights of the Jaguar" single, along with some additional big-name remixes on record store shelves next to the piece of shit BMG distributes. The reason I forwarded the post along was so that consumers would be aware of this and hopefully do the right thing when they encounter the cheesy knockoff on the shelves at their local shops. -d.w. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
