hey, here are some brief reviews of stuff I picked up yesterday Arena: "Calor" HPFRecords, Brussel 1993 pseudo-italo-calypso house with overdubbing of spanish. the main riff is a synth-spanish guitar sound, not really jazzy. more programmed. but definitely a good-vibes groove. "check it out" Nu Yorikan Soul (Masters at Work): "The Nervous Track" Nervous Records NY 1993 definitely the best thing Masters at Work has done in ages. Hot latin house with a jazzy sax. definitely fierce. "get it" Ten City: "Only Time will Tell" eastWEST records US 1992 Actually, this is about a year old and I got it for the b-side "Deep Kiss" which is an intense vibraphone house track!!! Mega-intense! But the main track (of which there are four mixes) sucks butt without a dental dam. "get it if you see it around" The Beloved: "Outer Space Girl" 2ep promo only eastWEST records UK 1993 this double ep promo has some nice regurgitated 91 style house, but the mixes with lyrics suck (kinda baby-ford lyrics, whiney and annoying). I have a feeling the regular 12" would lack the good mixes. Pretty "housey" and commercial, but some nice grooves. Sounded better in the store. :( "might as well check out the promo if you see it" -tt

To: idm-owner@techno.Stanford.EDU From: Terre Thaemlitz <Terre_Thaemlitz@qmcumc.mail.cornell.edu> hi there! here are two reviews of comps that i recently did for Trip fanzine. i was emailing them to the editor and thought i might as well post'em to idm as well... -terre ----------------------------------------- EMIT0094 - Various (US: Instinct / UK: Time Recording) Contemporary ambient on the soulful side - this cd is the shit! All of the tracks have a very loose touch to them, and most use common jazz/funk instrument sounds such as piano, conga and jazz percs, organ, electric bass, etc., to lesser and greater degrees. The comp opens with Coco, Steel & Lovebomb's "Harlem," which is a warped revisiting of early urban soundscape tracks by EWF and Kool&TG. The mood is set. "Sweat," by Voodoo Warriors of Love, brings in a little more contemporary ambient feel, but doesn't let loose of the free groove. None of the tracks do - they just take you deeper and mellower, resting you up for the final beat drops in Woob's "Void, Part One." This comp is destined for many an afternoon of repeat play in my cd player, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for smoove contemporary ambient without that sharp cyber edge. (TT) Chill Out Phase Two (US: Instinct) This double cd set continues in the same encyclopedic vein as Instinct's first Chill Out comp, combining numerous facets of the contemporary ambient genre that you usually don't find all in one spot. The tracks range from the synth and string washes of Sad World's "Apadana" to the electro-experimentation of Prototype 909's "Understand." There are plenty of classics here, such as Air Liquide's "Sun Progress," (yeah, that groovy inner track from the blue vinyl), and a mix of The Irresistible Force's "Space is the Place." There's also recent stuff from big cheeses such as the Aphex Twin ("Blue Calx"), Dominic Woosey as Mysteries of Science ("Creatures Made of Light...), The Drum Club (" Spaced Out Locked In"), and Cabaret Voltaire ("Project 80"). But hey, you don' t have to be a music mogul to be fierce! Human Mesh Dance (Taylor808 from P909) definitely pulled it off with "Wet Moon," which will be dj-accessible on a limited edition ambient vinyl double album coming out on Instinct this summer ( it will also feature hand-picked tracks by Instinct comrades Omicron, Mysteries of Science and Terre Thaemlitz). Chill Out Phase Two is a high- quality comp that's well worth getting. (DJ S)

I've been meaning to review some records I bought recently, so here goes... Phylyps Trak II (Basic Channel - BC09) -------------------------------------------------- One side is hyper-minimal, too repetitive (even for a Basic Channel release), and almost deep-housey. Blech. Flip the record and turn that frown upside down, as the Basic Channel folks strike gold with a *dense* mutating techno number. The track totally typifies that brooding lo-fi Basic Channel "heavy machinery" sound, and develops more intelligently (arrgh, the "i" word) than almost anything else I've heard on the label. Nice. Orbital: Are We Here? [U.S. only remixes] (FFRR 697-120 047-1) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was wary when I read the sleeve ("fierce, guaranteed floor-filling"), but I bought it anyway. A seven-track 2x12" with four Orbital remixes and three Rabbit in the Moon remixes. Now I hadn't heard anything previously by Rabbit in the Moon, and from all the acclaim their _Phases of an Out-of-Body Experience_ 12" got, I was kind of excited to find out what they sounded like. What a disappointment. Their ideas are good (take snippets of sound from classic Orbital tracks and work them in to the "Are We Here" remix), but their three remixes just come off sounding like annoying, commercial club fodder. Orbital, on the other hand, don't disappoint. "Who Are They" is a 7:30 long masterpiece - mutated, layered female wailing over a slow breakbeat. "Industry Standard" is a 3:51 long edit of the same track, while their other two remixes are harder, acid-tinged 4/4 workouts. Neat stuff from the Hartnoll brothers, unsatisfying drivel from Rabbit in the Moon. Neuropolitique: Menage a' Trois LP (Irdial-Discs - 52IRDMAT4LP) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A big black-and-white picture of producer Mat Cogger's face stares out at you from the sleeve of this record underneath a huge block-letter "Neuropolitique" banner. Kinda' high profile packaging for faceless techno, eh? This was the first Irdial record I ever saw anywhere, so I snapped it up. Cogger mixes noisy, hard, kick-driven rhythms with boisterous repeating melodies, and the formula works brilliantly. Six tracks to move you, and the seventh calms you down with an ambient feel that wouldn't be out of place on Mad Mike's _Galaxy to Galaxy_ project. Eco Tourist: Magelonic/Penguins (Ifach 004) & Solcyc: Off the Man/Vision (Ifach 005) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Oh yes. File under: why I buy records in the first place. Baby Ford's Ifach label turns out two winners. I double-D M. Fat analogue basslines, wierd sounds, patient intros, excellent melodies and booty-shakin' drum programming characterize these four beauties. Good enough to make me want to print a run of 1000 "I luv Ifach" bumper-stickers (ok, I'm getting cheesy now). Just buy these records, it's really that simple. I also listened to, but didn't buy, Baird Remo's _Emojerk_ EP (Ifach 006). It's, shall we say, "wildly experimental." "Just plain wierd" also works. Totally dancefloor-unfriendly, but boundary-pushing nevertheless. Terrace: Back-flash (DJAX-UP-203) --------------------------------------------------- Taking a trip to Mr. Robbers' neighborhood we find the Dutchman in relatively fine form. Quite a laidback release for DJAX, too. I like the first track, "D-Inspired," the best, with its interesting snare drum patterns weaving themselves around a solid 4/4 kick, subtle 303 basslines, and sweet synthesised tinkling. Your mileage may vary on the other three tracks but, for the most part, this is just a really consistent, fairly melodic, IDM release. It's not mindblowing stuff, but it is well-crafted techno from a man who knows a thing or two about that sort of thing. Lida Husik/Beaumont Hannant: Evening at the Grange (Astralwerks - ASW 6135) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I picked this up at Tower before the recent spate of Beau Hannant-bashing hit the net. I like it though. If you can't stand vocals, don't buy, because all the tracks have them in good measure. But Husik's voice is quite beautiful, especially when she harmonizes with herself. She also plays a mean E-bow :) . Hannant is given writing and "keyboard" credits on three of the five tracks, but they all have keyboards, so I wonder if its him or not on the other two tracks. To me, the standouts are "Textured" and "Starburst 7" - all due to Hannant's slammin' hip-hop rhythms, of course. - Matthew Lehrer

Boy o Boy! Whoever send Generation Star Wars by Alec Empire was mindblowing was not pulling anyones chain....Holy Shit....I have it cranked in the headphones right now....Shit...This track is fucking wikked beyond belief it is the last one on the R2d2 side...this is the aural equivalant of being sodomized by an alien while captured on a enemy space ship, while on about hmmmm, ten grahams of magic mushrooms...A few of these tracks have sounds coming out from every possible dimension....many are almost too similar to the work of U-ziq and Aphex Twin, but if your are going to emulate someone that is an excellent place to start. Pretty Fucking Amazing. Black Knight-Moody Balance E.p.-Source Records 4 tracker written by Robert Gordon, the guy behind some of the best "bleep" records of the past (Xon, Forgemasters, Dj Mink....) this is sort of abstract techno with bleeps....not the sort of thing that jumps out at you at first listen but very good none the less...lots of low frequencies and lots of bass, one track has that repetitive sort of electro rythym that makes me like to move (think of Gak or Nightmares on Wax-Dexterous) Bam Bam-Best of Westbrook Classics-Tresor Bam Bam released a twelve inch called Space Trax about 10 months ago that proves this guy is still around, he just happened to have his prime back in the early days, Space Trax kinda sucked, this compilation is pretty killer. It is an 8 track compilation of rereleases of some classic Acid records from 1988-1990...Includes the highly sought after Where's Youre Child and Make You Scream....Good acid shit here, and harder than shit to find the original twelve inches nowdays. And by the way it sounds real nice, not like a lot of compilations, this has two tracks per side which could be mixed loud and still sound great. R-Zac 23-Base Support-Drop Bass Network New from the Spiral Tribe, who incidently are supposed to be in/going to Milwaukie Wisonsin for a couple of months...This is some really fast (can be pitched down thank you) LOOPY heady trippy hardcore tribal acid breakbeat (jungle) trance....4 songs all really long and really worth the whole length of the vinyl....with a lot of different rythyms going at once....If all "Harder Techno" was this good, I could very easily see myself doing something that a hardcore techno freak would do. Tusken Raiders-Bantha Trax-Clear Hey what can I say I like it! IMHO much better than Jedi Knights...much more original and inventive sounding....true as others said a few of the tracks are to damn short.....The human beatbox track has a good idea but the guy cant beatbox for shit...How about hiring the guy from the Fat Boys for the next attempt, I would love to hear some more human beatbox in techno tracks....A Rit-ta-tit-a-ritta-tita-tit Derek moses@teleport.com Inportland Techno Acid Ambient Mail Order DJ Rumpleforeskin Import Domestic Records-C.D.'s 0--\___/--\___/---0 phone/fax 503-620-3340 SUBMERGE TO THE DEEPEST DEPTHS IN ORDER THAT THE HIGHEST BE ELEVATED TO LIGHT *Alfred Rosenberg

Here is some new shit that I have picked up recently that gets me going.... Monster Music-Iridal Records 50th release comp-Iridal 50 ird com 2 this little number is a compilation of exclusive tracks taken from the "Monster Music" Pirate radio shows from the summer of 1992....1992 is a while ago but these stand the test of time real well motherfuckers....Highlights of the compilation include "Yes UFO's" by Beautyon which has a voice talking about space and the possibility of alien visitation, with some ambient noodling and then out of nowhere comes in the most wicked beat to move this track along real nicely....This is the beat to drive me beserk....I dig it to say the least....Other highlights include "Hold" by Ray Tracing which is a extremely up beat happy little techno number with a melody that could be played by an ice cream truck, but this just has an evil edge to it, I could imagine dressing up in a clown suit and then getting extremely violent, while this song plays in the background, this track reminds me of something the Aphex Twin or U-Ziq might make in their sinister but happy mood. And Lastly we have Aqua Regia -"Po-Lu-On" which is a dark Techno piece with a Detroit feel....The strings in this song are very powerful.....Nice compilation....Well worth the 13 pigskins I paid for it... Antihouse-Antihouse-Visible Records cd-1004 A new full length cd from Visible Records out of San Fransico, let me tell you I like this label, ok, I will admit there have been a few stinker releases...but there have been some shit hot ones as well (Beltram-Aonox comes to mind)....This cd falls in the shit hot category...Real deep heavy ambience and spacy bleepy shit with a lot of drones and synth washes and laser synth sounds....Imagine being dosed on 25 hits of acid, and then stripped of your clothes, surrounded by space-munchkins, and bright lasers and led's, while the space-munchkins feed the computer of the mothership bleeps and blips while huming an evll analogue work chant....this is what track number 2 sounds like....THis is some wacked out shit.....I lIke it...It credits a D. Rudolph as one of the musicians could this be the same D. Rudolph from Skinny Puppy? Or maybe it is Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer? Who knows. Well shit, I just blew another wad of cash on a lot of new releases. Here goes my spouting off: U.S. Domestics: Yippee!!! Looks like some more techno is coming out from the U.S., it seems like more than ever before. Trybet-Mood Setter E.P.- Me love this long time....A four tracker from some guys from Baltimore, all cuts pretty nice but one in paticular gets me nice and wet.. ."Rotation Curve" is the name and it sounds similar to something The Source might put out with a completely fat ass synth sound that pumps in and out that sonically slices right thru layers of skin, fat and back hair down to me spine where it tingles and tingles....nice drum programming as well....and top notch production...give me more now! V.A.-Neighbours-Sounds 003 Holy shit! I just found a killer cut on this release. It is the Freddy Fresh cut called 5 mouths. This guy is starting to put out some good material when he calms down and avoids the brutal hardcore techno style. The song is vary reminiscant of a song that was on his Tajhna 2*7 on Analog records...A throbbing 303 with a sort of electo stutter beat and some nice analog high pitched swirls that sound like a fly buzzing next to my ear....trust me this track kicks some serious booty....plus this comp has some other cuts that aren't to bad.....worth the price just for the Freddy Fresh cut..Also included is a fun Jungle type cut by Deadly Buddha with some heavy human beatbox action... Chito's Revenge-Oracion-Bomb Records 005 Two monster acid house tracks that hit hard but still could be considered house or techno...Meaning a guy like Junior Vasquez could plays this for all of the boys, or a guy like Adam X could play this at a hardcore rave (anyone could play it)...Oracion is a nice loopy acid track that pumps and throbs with a nice loopy tripped out voice type sound, sounds a lot like something Random Xs on D-Jax would do. The other side is a HARD house stormer that could be played on 45 and pass for a Gabber track, now that I think about it a lot of Hard House nowdays sounds like gabber on the wrong speed....It has the distorted Kick drum and all... Dj Trance and Darwin Chamber-Indians and Aliens-Bassex 005 Another good domestic....I wonder to myself I am getting lame or is the music getting better? A lot of the new stuff isn't blindingly original but they know how to get a good groove and work the sounds and the percussion....these tracks fall into that category nice percussion (a lot of it, Tribal mixed with electro and hard house beats) this shit will get you moving and keep you moving the length of the tune...there is a lot of 303 and spacy keyboards to give these tracks a 6 am outdoor in the desert watching the sun come up rave kind of feel.....Nice Pete Namlook/Jonah Sharpe-Wechselspannung-Reflective Records From the U.S. king of intelligent perverted freak techno and ambient: Reflective records. I Love this label! This record is no exception to my love....Nice record...the written side has an electronic bleep fest with a semi-electro beat, but this beat aint a total stormer, it is a little bit subdued but the keyboards go thru a conversation one keyboard will say something then the other one responds, and then they all speak at once....This sounds like an extraterrestial debate!! High motherfuckin Tech...The other side sounds sort of similar but without the beat....Plus those reflective labels are so fun to watch spin around...yippee Optic Nerve-Trilogy Waves 1,2 and 3-Direct Beat 3 separate records on the Direct Beat label from Detroit, produced by Aux 88 who have been disscussed here recently...This is some mature Detroit techno, very smooth in places with some nice classic string sounds and nice melodys, this will make you experience emotions, techno with feeling....Watch these guys get picked up by someone like Warp, I make a prediction, we shall see....Anyway very nice stuff, I like this stuff a lot, and I will resist flaming some of the more well known Detroit techno artists whose work pails in comparison in my opinion... Import Autocreation-Sauce/Gruff-Template records I was stoked to hear this as I rate Autocreation as some of my favorite shit...Being the trainspotting gonad I am, I noticed that Marc Van Hoen (the sonic pervert from Locust/Seefeel) name is not listed anymore in the credits, I figure he must have had a big impact on their sound....The results of his depature aint too bad: this record still kicks ass! Sauce would be my pick which is a electro distorted low end fest....I would love to hear this on a few Sound Systems (especially at a rave in Seattle that had 88 18" JBL's) the bass would surely make me loose bowel control, but it would be worth it! The other side has an electronic low beat hip hop experimental jam that sounds like something off of Gescom 2 only better. Astral Body--"Auroral Belt Slide" Xangadix--S/T Josh Wink--United DJs of America--V/A cont. mix A3000--Magnetic Gliding Comments/flames/suggestions to adivakaran@worldbank.org. Thx! -------------------------------------------------------------- X-Mix-3: Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva "Enter: Digital Reality!" (Studio K7, Germany) (TT 73:09) Given the legendary reputation of Richie Hawtin as DJ and that I've never been so fortunate as to see the man DJ live, I was quite pleased when I saw this. About 2/3 of the disc is taken by the Acquaviva set, which, while having a few tepid tracks, is beautifully paced and quite seamless. The track listing reads like a who's who in fine techno/trance/house: Speedy J, Laurent Garnier, Hardfloor, K. Hand, and yes, bloody Scanner who seems to be everyone's blue-eyed boy at the moment. Unlike Acquaviva, who builds his mood gradually, Hawtin goes straight for the meat and potatoes with Fred Giannelli's utterly flawless housey trancer "The Acid Didj Three". I only started to get bored when--(can anyone guess :-)--Hawtin somewhat self-indulgently rounds off with two of his own Plastikman tracks. A few days ago someone commented on how he was amused that Plastikman made it so big in the IDM community since Hawtin is really more an acid house pioneer than a classic IDM-er; the track selection on X-Mix-3 only confirms this. The soulless will dimiss this as just another "too danceable to be intelligent" record, but I'd rather look at it as an orgy of complex, subtly syncopated and fabulously funky grooves. (Hey, check out that alliteration :-). Thumbs up. Astral Body "Auroral Belt Slide" (Disturbance, Italy) (TT 68:42) (US distribution: rotten, pester Silent Records, SF) Disturbance, the intelli*ent techno arm of established ambient industrial label Minus Habens, is a relatively new label that seems to have found its stylistic feet surprisingly quickly. The last couple of years saw the release of the two "Outer Space Communications" comps. with strong tracks by, among others, Atom Heart, Lagowski, Exquisite Corpse, Polygon Window, Speedy J and an assortment of harder acid tracks from labels like Labworks and Pod Communications. Astral Body's debut album continues in the same "other side of IDM"/trancey tradition. The grooves are solid and mildly housey and show the dance-floor savvy of the best Detroit, and although I hate facile comparisons, I have to admit to being reminded in more than one place of the fluid grace of Dave Angel. Although the electronics are quite complex and layered, there aren't any "tunes" per se--things stay melodically dry for the most part (not a bad thing in this case). If you liked the more up-tempo moments of B12's "Electro-Soma" you'll dig this. Xangadix--Xangadix (Fax, Germany) (TT 59:03) Xangadix is apparently the dance side of Pino and Wildjammin, the gentlemen who brought you "The Whole Traffic" and "A Day in the Park". Since I didn't especially care for either of the above I wasn't expecting much out of this. Well, I was pleasantly surprised; Xangadix didn't exactly blow me off my feet but it's certainly well-crafted and fairly complex trance. Those familiar with the early Fax dance stuff and groups like Resistance D will know what to expect--intelligent but basically simple rhythms, rather dominant basslines, minor-key trancey melodies. Gripe: track #2, the rather hilariously-titled "Filter for Namlook". They might just as well have replaced the "t" in "Filter" with another "l"--twelve minutes of aimless noodling leaves a lot to be desired. Josh Wink--United DJs of America vol. 3 (Moonshine) (TT 68:29) I like! I like! Hey, I know that Moonshine has exhibited a pathological inability to release _any_ worthwhile music, but I forgive them all their sins just for having put this record out. I've yet to hear a DJ whose tastes run so close to mine as Mr. Wink, and I guess that's why I was so bowled over. From beginning to end the focus is on hard, stripped down house with an acid edge--sort of a Plus 8 meets Strictly Rhythm sound. The opener, "Bugged Out" by the fabulously talented Murk duo, is just wonderful--a smooth trancer, less poppy than their other songs, that moves into cruise control almost immediately. Did I say the whole album was stripped-down house? Try Wink's own "How's the Music" and tell me if house gets any more stripped-down than this! Not a _thread_ on its quivering body--just the drum machine hammering out the most basic and elegant of house beats, with a woman moaning "Concentrate!" and a guy saying "How's the Music"--obviously a play on "House Music". The Dan Bell and Acquaviva tracks were kinda disappointing, but the Rozzo and Soundcraft tracks are fab. The _real_ killer, though, is Tata Box Inhibitors' 10-minute "Plasmids". It starts out with a slow, grinding, lightly industrial, almost Aphex-y feel but slowly morphs into a funky monster, adding layer upon layer until...whew. Anyone know more about these guys? I _have_ to find more! The disc climaxes with another fine Wink track, Firefly's "Supernatural". Two thumbs, eight fingers and all eleven of my toes up. A3000--"Magnetic Gliding" (Disturbance, Italy) (TT 61:25) More minimal Detroit techno from two Italian (presumably) white boys. Things are even more minimal than on the Astral Body CD--here it's almost pure rhythm, with the percussion really dominating the mix. The programming's fine and fluid and reminded me, for some reason, of early A Guy called Gerald (high praise in my book), and the (heavy) syncopation is flawless--things truly glide along. If you want to scratch that Detroit itch but have been annoyed, like I have, by recent Juan Atkins and Eddie Fowlkes, this might just do the trick. All for now! Ashok

1? (Blanco Y Negro NEG80T 4509-99910-0) ----------------------------------------------------------- Well, as Ozy said in an earlier post: science fiction = techno. I couldn't agree more. Carl Craig only enhances his reputation as a master of electronic dance music with this (major label?) release, once again showing off his incredible diversity (the genre-crossing of Pritchard/Middleton is a good reference) and crystalline production skills. Here the theme is futuristic Detroit techno - updating and extending the sound. A tough task, but he pulls it off effortlessly. Complex yet uncluttered rhythm programming with large helpings of funkiness (electro-tinged, but *so* much fuller) work beneath a moody three-note melody that simply bleeds warmth. Four mixes: Paperclip, Psyche (both similarly excellent), Kenny Larkin's take on things (actually my least favorite - doesn't shine like the others), and a three-minute Bonus Beats kinda thing. The staggering richness of this record cannot truly be conveyed in words. Buy on sight. Oh yeah, this is intelligent DANCE music. Fill the floor, kid. :) Plaid (Clear CLR 409) ----------------------- Ed and Andy (the renegades :) ) doin' their own thing on Clair's label. Best record on Clear yet. Heck, best record I've bought in a while - the kind where *all* the tracks are fucking brilliant, not just one. When Black Doggists are involved you should know the drill - groovalicious skeletal rhythms + lilting melodies = yummy music (these reviews seem to be taking on an "equations" theme). Yes, more genre-crossing! Four tracks - electro, jungle, and...other stuff. The thing I love about these guys (and BDP in general) is their ability to reference so many different types of music while retaining their own feel. Makes an interesting comparison to _Science Fiction_ too. Both are great records, but Carl's complexity seems deceptively simple whereas Ed and Andy's is blatantly mind-boggling. Go figure. Bochum Welt - Scharlach Eingang (Rephlex CAT 030/P) -------------------------------------------------- If the soundtrack for the next Mad Max movie was composed by Afrika Bambatta, this is what it would sound like. Fast electro 808 hits, laser blasts, a kinetic acid line, and haunting strings make up the first track: "CH Riot On Proxima Centauri". Chris Jeffs gets to work on track two - a melodic, beatless synth composition that makes me feel like I'm drifting through space whithout my mommy. The flip side starts off all scary again, and the first track, "Phobos", sounds like a reworking of "CH Riot...", complete with hollowed-out, rapid-fire percussion. Finally, "Omicron" makes things all better with dreamy chords floating above slightly more laidback rhythms. Then the doomsday acid line comes in, and I'm distraught once again. All four tracks play at 45, and they don't last very long. This record was produced in Milan by an Italian named Gianluigi Di Costanzo. He should remix Robert Armani's "Circus Bells" and call it "Circus Hell" or something. Damn scary music. Get back to me when I stop shaking uncontrollably. :) Scan 7 - Undetectible EP (Underground Resistance UR-031) ------------------------------------------------- A three-track EP from UR's Trackmaster Lou, but the first cut, "Password Soul", is really the only one worth mentioning. Living up to its title, we're treated to a marathon jazz-techno session complete with twangy bassline and big, beautiful brass hits. This is what UR are best at, and the two cuts of repetitive noise-techno on the B-side are therefore quite a letdown. 4 Hero - Universal Love (Selector 12 SEL 4) --------------------------------- Anthemic jungle from the 4 Hero crew. The L Double and Nookie mixes on the B-side just aren't my cup of tea, but Metalheads and 4 Hero deliver with two gems on the A-side. Goldie uses delightful strings and low-key rhythms, while 4 Hero takes the emotion level even higher and throws in a brilliant saxophone solo. Carol Crosby's vocals on both mixes are the perfect remedy for the blues, and remind us that summer is on its way. The Memory Foundation (M-plant M-p303) ----------------------------------- I'm going on the assumption that this is a Rob Hood production, although it could just as well be some unknown Austrian with a well-developed sense of the Berlin/Detroit sound. If it is Hood, then this record definitely represents a departure from the clinical sparseness of most of his tracks to date. The first cut on the record is downright soulful, with warm synth pulses and some really nice Rhodes piano work. The next two are both less busy, but maintain that big, deep techno sound. Imagine Maurizio with cleaner production and some new noises, and you'll get the picture. Erik Van Den Broek - Subsonic Soundscape (Shiver SHOV3) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Erik Van Den Broek delivers five slices of cool, spacey techno on the third Shiver release. From breezy electro to harder acid-trancey stuff, that Dutch quality shines through. Plus there's the added bonus of Shiver's slammin' custom-designed graffiti labels. Tasty. Vulva - From The Cockpit (Rephlex CAT 021 LP) ------------------------------------- Whenever I listen to this LP I always get a good sense of where the Vulva boys were coming from when they titled this album. I'm on a spaceship - the Millenium Falcon let's say - and each of the eleven tracks is a taste of what I see, from the cockpit, as I make my way through the galaxy. All bases are covered, from really pretty ambience to mellow Detroit grooves, and everything is coated with the unmistakable sheen of space travel. An accomplished release that never fails to enthrall. ObAcidHouse: I bought a six-track acid sampler on Axodya records out of Swizerland with a Synectics track on it called "Acid Pounder". Having not heard their stuff on Rephlex, I was more than pleasantly surprised to hear a tough, mid-tempo acid workout that would do Woody McBride proud. I hope their Rephlex LP is more of the same... :) (fat chance, I know). - Matthew - Scharlach Eingang (Rephlex CAT 030/P) -------------------------------------------------- If the soundtrack ? ?; or something. Damn scary music. Get back to me when I stop shaking

Um I got the feeling it was played at 33&1/3... It feels way to "speedy" at 45 and as you said, the tracks play too short that way. It felt better as minimal electronic... Well the label says 45, and upon flipping through the tracks at 33 I would have to say that 45 is indeed the correct speed. The record just doesn't sound *right* at 33. Too sluggish. - Matthew "I grew up thinking that techno music is actually something that you can't imagine. That is techno at its best. Yeah. Sorry. I guess I wasn't paying attention and since the Purple Universe promo was slow and Weirs is slow I just figured... Actually after listening to it a couple of times at 45 I get the feeling of it better. I guess the 33 1/3 speed is a bit slow. It just seems a little too fast for no apparent reason besides being fast. It's not particularly hard to me and I can't think of many fast tracks that it'll go well with. It's still excellent though. -robert ______________________________________________*AudioElectronic*_____ Sampling the 808 is like shooting an animal sonic explorers \ and hanging its stuffed head \ in your livingroom! - (mw) __\

Nah, the 808 sounds tight n'right at 45. And one aspect I love about it is the fact that the tracks _are_ short; I hate ten minute techno tracks with about 2 minutes of sheer brilliance and 8 minutes of build up. Hard(er) to mix sure, but I love this gorgeous soundbites approach; this is one top EP.

I haven't seen much discussion out side of a brief mention for each of these so i thought i'd review each since i've been playing them for the past few weeks. The Deseo Remixes: Any excuse for new material from FSOL, Global Comm & Transglobal Underground is fine with me, even if it does have vocals by Jon Anderson on it. Although I liked "Spiritual High" a long time ago, jon's vocals are a bit annoying on this one. Is he trying to give this disc a world flavor by singing in his own contrived monosyllabic language (as well as english)? oh well, enough cynicism. Deep Forest remixes: Deep floresta- this one's kind a boring, too much Jon for my taste & the remix is rather unexceptional, no where near as good as Deep forest's remix of Apollo 440 or Youssou N'dour.Speed Deep- this one's a little better, standard house/trance mix, samples of Jon aren't as obtrusive on this one even though there's probably about just as many as the other mix. not quite as unexceptional as the other mix, but forgettable just the same. Transglobal Underground remixes: Intercity 125 mix-spacey dub house mix. makes minimal use of vocals (and the most palatable ones too, these might not be Jon's though, just the background singers). Variation in the song is slight & might wear on those who don't like a steady housebeat. Master Mute vs. The ToneE Programme mix-some of the same spacey synths as their first mix, but the beat is slowwed down, intro is nice, but then... AAAAHHHH! Jon's vocals start up. Not to worry, there's the Master Mute Instrumental mix which is very similar, but without the vocals. FSOL Deseo Reconstruction: This one's nice. starts off with some chirping bird noises and the world vocal sample. Slowly moves into a groove more similar to FSOL's Lifeform's single than the ISDN stuff. Too bad there's only one FSOL mix. Global communication remixes: Amor Real-nice ethereal synths with some booming background synths which provide the beat. song gradually builds and mixes in flute & string sounds & some of jon's voice (in echoe) which actually workds extremely well (no cringing during this one). Bless This- this one starts off with vocals (Jon's?) some of which sound like female vocals (perhaps background vocals). a heartbeat-like beat steps in & the vocals continue to echoe back and forth, another excellent remix. Overall: skip the deep forest & transglobal underground mixes put on either global comm or FSOL remix. Still haven't figured out exactly what's being remixed here, what jon anderson's part in this project is, whether this is an album, ep or single; and just exactly what "deseo" is; but i am happy to get more FSOL & GC. Going Global Series (UK) I saw this on vinyl but didn't check to see if the format was the same. This is also on 10XCD singles. However since most are 13-16 minutes, this all could have fit onto 3 CDs, though the fold out packaging with individual slots for each CD is quite interesting (though it takes up more space than i would like). Another not so wise move was to put all the remixes of the same song on the same CD-no chance of mixing dub's w/ vocal versions here. Tracks: Rachid Taha vs. Justin Robertson: while i didn't care much for the original release of this (in the US the original JR remixes were released on ffrr 12"). These 2 mixes are significantly better. The prankster guitar thud opens with vocals and mixes in bongos, then the thumping house beat and assorted other noises, much more variation than the original 12" makes it more interesting. lionrock orchestra dub is sans beat, just congos & JR's trademark horn sound with some minimal synth & guitar sound and some vocals from the original not on any of the other mixes. rachid taha vs. JR: I know that voila voila was released as a single, but i don't remember if this one (indie) was. the game is afoot mix is standard JR fare and gets monotonous after all the sounds have been put into the mix. flute is nice, including the vocals may have helped give it more variety. the next two mixes are even more monotous than the first. cheb kaled vs. development corp. (chebba): this was also released (in the US on Island). mixes here are man city mix, man city instr., overworld dub mix. standard dance floor fare here, ok for a while but gets boring after a few minutes. mory kante vs. oliver lieb, resistance d.: ambush vocal mix is harthouse trance (lite) with some funky guitar & bongos(?) over it. chunky. beat stops and vocals step in and the beat steps in again. Interesting dance floor fare. instrumental mix & ambush vocal edit are more of the same. resistance d. mixes (vocal/dub) are slower and distort the vocals more (actually the looping of vocals on this gets monotonous as the same 3 words are repeated throughout the mix). cheb khaled vs. dom. t, dmitri, al stone: al stone gives this a standard hip hop beat and keeps the full vocals intact. dom. t gives it an annoying house mix, very repetitive on the beat, vocals &synths. the casbah mixes (dmitri?) are the best, various drum noises and some guitar work gives it nice variety. cheb khaled vs. fluke (kebou): this is probably my favorite of the 10, the slow mix (92 bpm) is very dubby, much like fluke's remix of Little Axe, with nice spacey noises & enough vocals to give a feel for the original. the 132 bpm mix is very much like "Slid" w/ only a trace of the vocals in the background. the xpensive mix is fluke doing jungle w/ cheb's voice thrown in here and there. alex maden vs. dread zone (bakala): this one's nice to. first mix is dub house disco with an indian flavor. second mix is more dub, less disco and fewer vocals, last mix is a hip hop (lite?) mix with dark synths washing over the mix and a very familiar (musical) sample which escapes me at the moment (could be the orb). sakan (timefax):no one remixing here. too bad. this one's pretty much a throwaway. a droning synth, a house beat, no vocals. blaah. mory kante vs. hardfloor (yeke yeke): you've heard this one already. vocal mix is a ffloor-filling trance choon. rachid taha vs. atlas (d'abord d'abaord): nice hip hop ditty here, minimal on the vocals, nice guitar rhythm, though there could be more variation on a theme here.

went shopping and picked up a few things i'd recommend: Gentle People "Journey": I believe the CD single (which i bought) contains both 12"s. This is a blend of 50s mood music, an early 70s movie's cheesy soundtrack & some spacey sounds thrown in. Reminds me a little of Tuxedomoon's "Dancing under the moonlight" (?) e.p. for some reason. The only thing about this that I don't like is the cheesy vocals (some FR, GE (?) woman blathering about the gentle people and what they like & some male background vocals which are just there)- as this would work much better without them. I'm not an aphex fan, but the aphex remix is excellent (though i find the distortion -added-for-effect in the middle of the track to be a bit annoying). This single will definitely make many top ten lists for the year (including mine). Small fish with spine/Stickleback (sorry, can't tell which is the artist name & which is the title): This 6 track ep hosts a wide variety of styles "siolin" is a minimal tune w/ a slow hip hop beat, FSOL (ISDN) sounds and some Asian (Japanese ?) string samples. "I hate you" has a faster beat (somewhere between hip hop & break beat), "dark" noises sampled into the mix. also sounds very much like the latest FSOL. "junk food" has no beat, just a droning sound that repeats in the background w/ some lighter noises & samples mixed in. "meika" opens w/ some radio wave-sounding noises, a sample of a woman's laugh & a heartbeat thumping, quite nice. "hollwood" is a cross between FSOL & mad professor w/ a Tricky-soundalike on vocals. "anjuna..." has a slow beat, some sax, and a few interesting samples & synths mixed together. Richar H Kirk "The number of magic". yes it's been given a US release (TVT). (don't have any track listing info), Big improvement here from the last Cabaret Voltaire stuff (plasticity/intn'l...-after which i stopped paying attention to his stuff). Much more experimental than his latter CV stuff, while still very melodic & dubby. Samples & echo galore here. track 2 has a disco background to it (probably guitar samples from some 70s disco tune), the drum work on this one is rather nice, though repetitive. the album sound is quite hard to describe: a blend of 70s disco (guitar samples & slower beat) bleepy/blippy stuff & some of the repetitive stuff familiar from CVs latter efforts & some "natural" (sampled) sounds blended in (sax, middle eastern flutes, jazz bass). Overall it's more complicated than the latter CV stuff, but the stuff is worked into the mix in a somewhat mechanical manner that makes the 8 minute tracks become repetitive after a while.

I just got done listening to a three foot stack of records, here is what I found to tickle my fancy: U.S. Domestics: R.E.A.L.M.-Wrench ep-Sublime records This record is fucking awesome! Talk about some serious distorted electro rythyms, and a serious groove, this is out there in space but the beats are so killer....many changes and very complex shit going on! I love shit like this! Liscenced from Plug research, does anybody know who Plug research is? Freddie Fresh-Comatone 95-Electric Music Foundation records This 4 tracker on urine colored vinyl is excellent! Slow death is my favorite track, pretty slow stutter beat kind of electro beat with a 303 and a nice flow...then in comes this absolutely haunting U-ziq type of melody that is very very powerful, a very heavy synth sound that just rings and gets stuck in your head....powerful shit! Alienage-Abduction ep-Gargoyle records This is an interesting looking record, blue and white lava lamp type of effect. Another electro type of record kind of on the commercial tip, and somewhat housey but still pretty good. First cut on the written side is a RAC sounding electro cut, second cut is a tribal deep housey kind of classic detroit bleepy cut....the other side is a pretty comercial rave type of thing but still is pretty damn original sounding with the keyboard sound....the last 2 cuts are nothing special. Not the best thing in the world but pretty good, and it is a domestic in the U.S. Dj Pierre-Spank Spank Groove-Strictly Rythym Strictly Rythym? I don't usually like that label at all but it seems some of their newer releases are getting heavy on the 303 and mucho more underground. This cut falls into that category. Excellent acid house that pumps in and out, this has a 303 that throbs like a finger that has been hit with a sledgehammer. This ranks way up there on my list of all time favorite acid cuts. Imports Bhasmantam-Black Hills-Muzak records This song Black Hills clocks in at over nine minutes and is a very thick tribal trancer (THIS IS THICK) which again has an excellnet groove that would be well suited for a outdoor full moon pagan ceremony by a huge fire or something. The beats are very layered and textured and complex. Extemely psychedelic! The other tracks could be classified of some sort of Goa style hypno acid trance. With a song called "The Hawcks eat the Amphetamine Reptiles" you gotta know these guys aren't fucking around. ARTIST: Saint Germain TITLE: Boulevard - The Complete Series LABEL: F Communications FORMAT: 8 track DLP What can I say? This is a truly classy album - blending the deepest of house with cool improvised jazz. The tracks ooze soul and emotion, and the production is top-notch. 'Deep In It' kicks off the collection in fine style, electric piano chords and improvised jazz solos building into an infectious deep housey groove. 'Thank U Mum' is a long building track based around a cool bassline, while snatches of vocals and solos come in and out. 'Street Scene' is a downtempo funky affair, 'Easy To Remember' overlays the smoky feel with an American funeral speech. 'Sentimental Mood' ups the pace slightly with a cool piano riff which forms the basis of the track, 'What's New?' features a list of respected influential musicians, clubs and labels read out on top of an addictive hypnotic underground house track. 'Dub Experience II' and 'Forget It' close the album in fine downtempo style. If you appreciate jazz at all, or if you like mellow underground house, then this is an essential purchase if you don't already own the three 12"s. ARTIST: Spooky TITLE: Clank LABEL: Generic FORMAT: 4 track EP The long-awaited return from the progressive house pioneers is a very different release. Metallic percussive sounds are the order of the day - 'Clank' is a very apt title. Slightly reminiscent of LFO's 'Tied Up', but not as harsh, melodies, well, clank away on top of the beats. Of the remaining tracks, one is a remix of 'Clank', the other two are slightly more conventional intelligent techno that would easily be at home on Warp. ARTIST: Leftfield TITLE: Afro-Left LABEL: Hard Hands Format: 3 track 12" This is a limited release of one of the top tracks from 'Leftism'. The 12" features 3 brand new mixes: 'Afro Ride' is a banging techno version with a lot less of the vocals and a building frantic acid/techno feel - very energetic. The main breakdown cuts to a drone while the chanting vocals fade up before a kick drum roll and snare drum roll fade up, launching back into the track as effectively as Hardfloor's epic breakdowns. 'Afro Sol' is a more laid-back ambient version with little percussion, and 'Afro Central' is another techno version, but more sparse and percussive, with less of the frantic pumping vibe of the first mix. Get it while you can! IN BRIEF: Picked up Gentle People's 'Journey' which I've heard so much about. I think it's very good indeed. Also Tone Theory - 'Limbo of Vanished Possibilities' on Plink Plonk is pretty good, as are the Alex Reece, DJ Krust and Roni Size remixes of DJ Krush on Mo'Wax... you're not kidding, smooth jazz with a timeless feel to it, plus a little quality roots dub like the old school engineers(not this wack new robotic sounding dub > >

only gave this a brief listen myself, but can't say i was too impressed, more like boring idm. if you're going to drastically change up your style, you had better come correct

Fluke - Bullet Circa I could say this is up to usual Fluke standard, but that would be unfair. This is by far one of the best tunes these guys have done to date. The 12" contains 4 mixes, with 2 remixes by Empirion and Atlas respectively. My personal favourite is the aptly titled "Percussion Cap" with a build up of meandering hi-hats and snares etc. which kicks in like the Gestapo half way through. Kimball Deckard - Hardlife PositiVibes What can I say about this tune. About the best American import your going to hear this summer; and , if my memory serves me correctly, featured on the much revered Paul Oakenfold 'Goa' mix from Radio One. A stomping trance workout with a gorgeously melodic break on the A-side with a deeper, more involved mix on the B-side. Some extracts from the Zanzibar Record (Shop) page on "A Cyborg's Eye View". Hmmm... What about the 10" version with the Dust/Chemical Brother mixes? This is the funkiest danciest tribalish tune i've heard for a long while.

This is amazing! There is no other word for it! There is also an english white floating around with the guitars from U2's Streets Have No Name! If you see it - get! Wicked! :) Ummm what else... Beat Foundation is tops as well... fleep!

This is a mix by the original (ie. the American) Dust Brothers. I thought it might have been the Chemicals, but apparently not. Rob.

Kimball Deckard - Hardlife ... PositiVibes ========================================== What can I say about this tune. About the best American import your going to hear this summer; and , if my memory serves me correctly, featured on the much revered Paul Oakenfold 'Goa' mix from Radio One. A stomping trance workout with a gorgeously melodic break on the A-side with a deeper, more involved mix on the B-side. Virus - Sun ...Perfecto ======================= A spankingly good tune that featured on the Paul Oakenfold 'Goa Mix' on Radio One, and has only just decided to rear it's head in this format. The mix featured on radio was of course the Oakenfold / Osborne mix ( no self promoting nepotism there then ! ). Although the best is undoubtedly the Jam El Mar mix which rips along at an unrelenting pace with interwoven melodies and wild acid. a splendid buy for those intense moments. This also includes a deeper 'Man With No Name' mix. Nox Alba - Mambo White ...Slate =============================== Originally released from the continent early last year on 21st Century Records this whistled through our shop at a rate of knots. It makes a welcome return in it's new format and on a British label featuring a Baby Doc remix and a KGB Party mix, as well as the lovingly Balearic Ibiza Sunrise mix and the original ( which is still great ). Forgive my ignorance but I don't actually know who 'Baby Doc' is and would appreciate some enlightenment as I am rapidly becoming a BIG fan of his work. Anyone admiring the talents of the aforementioned artist could do a lot worse than obtaining this, as it is his inimitable style, grace, and a perfect blend of melody and power that is brought to this mix. The KGB mix has less urgency about it, and rolls along quite nicely in no hurry to get anywhere in particular. For this reason I find it quite refreshing. Though not as much so as the Ibiza Sunrise Mix. Typical Balearic beats washed with a Spanish guitar line designed to whisk you away and almost make you believe your drifting in the sea amongst the sea-weed at Playa Den Bossa after a particularly HARD morning in Space. Virtual Obsession - Before Dawn / SFX - Y Salem...Symbiosis ============================================================ An EP of 2 tracks taken from the double CD compilation on 'Smart' records called 'Trust In Trance'. This can only be described as hard ambient trance ( for want of a pigeon hole ). It really defies explanation; suffice it to say I wouldn't be expecting any better from the likes of Vangelis or Tangerine Dream. Have I said enough ? This is definitely a label to watch for as their other release that I am in possession of , "Placid" by Stanley Shanti And The Chillum Wallahs ( no drugs involved there ! ), is also approaching perfect trance and definitely intelligent dance. If you miss these it will end in tears. * Extract from our On-Line record store, Zanzibar Records, at * "A Cyborgs Eye View". Reviewed here: Third Electric Dj Fresh vs. Walker Analogical-Bubbles The Morning Glory Seeds Elements-Nuclear Winter Zulutronic Dusk Nurse City Nigel Richards-611 Groove Third Electric-1983-Electrechord records 100 I am pretty sure this is the first release on a new label out of Germany, this record being heavy on the electro tip. A side 1983 is a smooth electro acid trancer sounds like a early morning cut; nice. B side has 2 cuts first one being a minimal electro ditty with a lot of kicks and pings and some scratching, not too bad. My pick is the 2nd cut on the b-side which has a freaky noise and and some heavy flange while a monster beat keeps the cut moving, good shit. Dj Fresh vs. Walker-Stop-Analog records #16 On one of my favorite labels of late, Freddie Fresh is putting out some killer shit. When he is not delivering pizzas, this guy makes some excellent techno. The logo side has a monster electro number with some serious distortion and bass, sorta like those shark trax on djungle fever/rising high...Then there is a low beat electronic "trip hoppy" type of deal...the other side has a funky techno cut with what I believe is Mc Bain (the Schwartzeneger character) on the Simpsons saying "stop talking crazy", this side also has three other cuts, one which is sort of a remix of the "Stop talking crazy cut", very nice shit at a nice price. Analogical-Bubbles-Djax records If you like cold, souless, alien sounding music than this record is for you. Very headfuck material, i like it in small doses but too much and my head starts to hurt. Good one to scare the shit out of people. The morning glory seeds-Sightings-100% Pure records This is a low beat experimental four tracker that is real dark and out there, a few of the tracks are dead ringers for some of Aphex Twin's recent shit (distorted funky slow beat and the haunting keyboard). Beware of the bass on this shit. Elements-Nuclear Winter-Collective Recordings This is another weird record that will probably be ignored, the a side has a deep acid trancer that is pretty hard and dark, not really my cup of tea but not bad. Then the b-side has a tribally acid thing that is pretty good. 2nd cut on the b-side is my favorite "Acid Scooter" is the name and it is in the same style as Gak or NOW Dextourous, the choppy sort of electro bass heavy beat that you either love or hate. Zulutronic-Zulutronic-Pharma records 001 This is the first record on Biochip C's new electro label, great start! Pressed on green vinyl this six tracker, has some pretty wacked out wild ass electro type experimentation with some wacky scratching, and some outer space sound effects flying in and out of the mix. Nice. Dusk-Aquarian Project-Peacefrog records The a side "Shadow Boxer" is a fucking monster jam. Take a old school break beat chop it up with a lot of delay and effects and a distorted beat underneath and then add a beautiful melody that sounds like an 808, and you have one serious percussive overload that stands heads above the rest. Very well produced unlike a lot of that Peacefrog stuff. Nurse City and G 104-Kerosene and crucified (Bassphemic village)-Pharma records 002 The second release on what looks to be a very promising label. Pressed on white vinyl this has big hip hop beats with electronic wackiness, making a real nice combination. There is even a cut that samples Juan Atkins to pretty great effect. I don't understand why labels like Clear get so much hype when shit like this is just as good, and it is criminally ignored. Nigel Richards-611 groove-Stickman records This is an excellent domestic 12" by a one of the better (imho) dj producers in the us. The a side " I like It" is a funky acid ditty with "I like it" samples and nice melodys and production. The second side on th b-side is my favorite cut "Shu Dee Bop" which has a filtered sample that gets tweaked with (kinda like bang the box) which sounds like someone is saying "should we drop?" while a real nice low acid? line (you know the kind that sounds like a buffallo farting) pumps in the background. This is powerful shit. Feedback or flames welcomed. Derek 0--\___/--\___/---0 moses@teleport.com 0--\_______/--------0

Patrick Pulsinger - Porno (Disko B) ----------------------------------- This has been around for some weeks, but I've only just had a chance to listen to it properly. It's a comparitively short 8-track LP, and shows off the nastier, seedier side of Pulsinger's musical personality. With the exception of the spooky musique-concrete soundscape of 'District' (which calls to mind Aphex's track on TEX 1), the 11-minute 'Care', and the beautiful, downtempo closing track, 'Reflections' (which is the closest material to 'Claire' on the album) the rest of the tracks basically fall into the hard, pulsing techno camp - experimental analogue jams. It grew on me with repeated listening. Ifach Volume 1 (Ifach) ---------------------- Peter 'Baby' Ford's label has been quietly putting out top-notch intelligent techno for some time now, and this first compilation makes some of the best tracks available to a wider audience. The minimal packaging doesn't reveal who's responsible for each track, just the titles, but Ford and Mark Broom are invloved in the majority of them. I haven't listened enough to be able to pick favourites, but 'Space 4-2' and 'Invisible Companions' are excellent... See ya Tom Churchill E-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk Electronic DJ and musician

Picked up a whole lot of vinyl the last week or so, this is my cream of the crop. Aural Expansions-Remixes Vol 2-SSR records A three tracker containing remixes by Speedjack, G-Man, and U-Ziq. The U-ziq mix is a cool listening type of piece that retains the U-Ziq flavor but still has a taste of it's own. The Speedjack mix is not my cup of tea, but the G-Man mix is real nice. It is a dancefloor stormer with a repetitive hypnotic quality to it, and some thick tribal trance overtones. Good stuff. 4-5 Darren Price-Mechanize/The Attic-Nova Mute records This guy is also known as Centuras on Junior Boys Own who put out the Arcadia ep that i have been trying to track down for ages (if you have one to sell/trade let me know :) Anyhow this is some serious hard distorto techno made for the dancefloor with some top notch production. If you like the Planet Rythym/Vector, Source, or the Fawn ep you will surely love this, Mechanize being the choice cut. 4-5 Aphex Twin-Hangable Auto Bulb-Warp This has landed in the United States and is resting happily on my turntable as i type. You have seen the reviews, and let me say it lives up to the hype! Few musicians can touch Richard James, this is some pretty bizzare shit. My favorite cut would have to be the title cut. 4.5-5 DJ Hyperactive/Freddie Fresh-Delerium records USA One of my favorite techno artist lately (Freddie Fresh) puts out another couple of slamming tracks. I can't tell by the track listing who did what but I am assuming the two tracks I don't like are by Hyperactive due to the fact I have not liked much of his stuff in the past. The first is your basic trancy house acid kinda deal, sort like DJ ESP but a little funkier, I like it, but it aint going to change the world. The second cut won't change the world either but it is cool. It is definetly Acid House but more like 1988 type of style, with all the chopped up samples and funky little noises and sirens etc, not the stripped down 303 heavy type of acid that is so common now days. I have a soft spot for this sort of stuff, it may sound a little too housey/clubby to some of you. 3-5 Word Up-Human Beatbox-R+S records It seems a few have brought the human beatbox into 90's techno, but this takes the cake! Real hip hoppy with some funky beats, some scratching, rock your beat samples, and some incredible human beat box action. Also contains another hip hop instrumental and an ambient jungle cut, but "Human Beat Box" is the shit. 4-5 The Fuel-Chicago Ep-White Label A four tracker white label that is pretty fucking excellent. First side contains 2 Green Velvet style hard techno house cuts, both with excellent production, some serious breakdowns and build ups without being cheesey, the second cut containing some serious military style snare rolls. The other side contains 2 cuts. The second is a nice electro acid number that pumps it quite serious. 4-5 4E-Don't Fuck with Nails-Force Inc A three tracker by Khan, containing a ambient breakbeat acid type of deal, a trip hoppy number, and a funky techno psuedo electro acid breaky thing. My favorite is the funky techno " " , which really doesn't do to much until half way through with some nice chopped up voices and trippy effects. 3-5 Ken Ishi-Extra-R and S records A new one from the Japanese homeboy, with 4 mixes to choose from. There are the original, Luke Slater, Dave Angel, and the Wagon Christ mix. The Wagon Christ mix saves the day (and I ain't usually a fan) but this is Very interesting shit. Somewhat similar to the plug one and 2 Jungle style, but with some very interesting spacey effects. Pump in the mini-trucks on Mars. 4-5 Rainbow Bridge-The Rain-Rainbow Bridge records Orlando Florida A 4 tracker on slightly on the commercial tip, but still valuable none the less. The Rain is my pick of the litter, a sort of ambient Hardkiss meets Future Sound of London meets DJ Icee with some wee bit of Jungle ( It sounds better on the turntable than it does on the computer screen). 3.5-5 Sem-Phon-Electron Industries From J Saul Kanes label comes this new electro stormer. The a side sounds very similar to Electronome on Interferrence records if you have heard that one you know what to expect. Like if you put Hashim or The Egyptian Lover with a hit of e and a big fat analogue synth to go with their beats in a studio and locked them in there til they came up with something for 1995 4-5 Attica Blues-Blueprints remix-Mo Wax Contains remixes by Ritchie Hawtin, Photek, and Alex Reece. My pick is to the Slakked Plastik remix by Ritchie. A real slow hip hop bass beat kicks back and forth while the synth washes sweep by as the funky highs bounce between every beat, and the little tweaker sounds pop in every so often. Very Funky and alien sounding, this is the future now. 4.5-5 Derek 0--\___/--\___/---0 moses@teleport.com 0--\_______/--------0

Some of these may be old...but I'm just gettin em so lay off! 1. Plastic Sleeves- Messages from Machines- Downlow 003- Fucking OG synth lines, chattering electro riddims and that early 80s attitude that makes you want to sink into a burning subway car and just write Taki 183 over and over again... 2. The Locust- Flight of the Wounded Locust EP- San Diego screaming linear chaos band releases a new 7" EP, moving towards a more electronic sound, though still satisfying in that classic Locust style. Not as thrilling as their first two releases, but still a jarring outing. Second side is bizzarre wank, some sort of keyboard experiments...somebody get these guys some Herbie Hancock. 3. Solvent/Lowfish split- Suction001 the first record chronologically in the lowfish/solvent split series. Suction003 had a lot of trouble leaving my turntable, 001 is no exception, four out of the five tracks are utter hits...beautiful melodies, intricate percussion, snappy sounds. Another of my favorite electro labels in its prime. 4. Drexciya- Deep Sea Dweller- Shockwave 1007- Fucking solid booming techno release from the heads that I normally associate with electro, squelching synths etc...bangin all around. 5. Destroyer 666- Violence is the Prince of this World- Label Unknown- Truly powerful metal from Australia, successfully bringing the viscerality and beauty of black metal into the brutality of Death in some instances, a very strong album, never boring, always changing up, best guitar-based destruction I've heard in awhile. 6. Parasite/Electromeca- C'mon PunXXX !!! Counterattack !!! - Peace off Ltd. 002 - The first Peace off release that I've really been into, older breaks are thrown to the wayside on both artists, with electromeca taking a sort of warpbeat chargecore and Parasite veering more towards bass-heavy breakcore, very strong 12". 7. Dan Hekate- Live CD-R- Great roughish electro release from the free party pogofiend himself, though gawdamn I wish it was broken into more than one track....skipping ahead with the search button gets ritualistic...not as rough as earlier Newskin but still hectic and wonderful. 8. Noizecreator- Push it! remixes- Active Underground 03- Fuck...what to say, brilliant. Bassfucking hardcore with solid synths and that ever-present hanging violence of "push it!", shame it's only two tracks. 9. Cyanide- Uncivilized World 06- If you don't know what this is...you should. Some of the best hardcore ever put out, IMO. At turns melodic and rough... 10. Underground Resistance- Millenium to Millenium- UR51- More detroitness...odd kicks on one side, both are solid, ahhh beauty these synths... 11. Black Dice- Untitled?-Vermin Scum #22- Chaotic guitar hardcore, I love it...as great as their 10" and somewhat of a compliment to the Locust EP in its analog badness. One side is just run out grooves? Kinda whack, but still solid... 12. Addict 5- Doormouse- mama didn't raise no punk, i made myself one E.P- Charging hardcore, fave track is the one with the metal vocals, didn't like the second side so much, too amen heavy, but overall a good release, addict 4 and 5 both are quite good. 13. Daedelus- Her's is- Phthalo 31 (?)- Great new release on Phthalo label from a Los Angeles vet, Daedelus. New review for this week. Other new ones include: Blaubac, Fennesz, and F.S. Blumm, all at www.students.uiuc.edu/~rstanton Bjork Vespertine (Elektra/Warner) [7.8] My second semester in college I had one of those creative writing teachers they always make movies about. You know, the off-the-wall one that throws chairs across rooms, curses profusely, gets his students rip-roaringly drunk at all the least appropriate times, and inevitably teaches them a series of great lessons, only about a quarter of which have anything to do with the art of writing creatively. All semester long, this teacher would pull me aside at the bar after class, buy me a drink, and tell me ?You know that assignment I gave to the class? You don?t have to do it. But I need you to do this?? His personal assignments to me were varied but many came in the form of a seemingly endless string of rewrites on this one damned piece, a scene from an inadvertent Crime and Punishment rip-off wherein the narrator finds a dead body at a train station and becomes physically ill. Week after week, he?d toast Virginia Woolf and assign me three more rewrites. For a while the piece got better with each subsequent rewrite, but by the twelfth go-round, I was merely switching back and forth between equally-well-crafted turns of phrase with each consecutive edit. By semester?s end, I couldn?t look at that scene without feeling sick. Worst of all, the piece never even got finished. The whole time, I assumed he was trying to tell me not to give up, that if I worked at the piece hard enough, it was bound to get good. I was wrong. He was trying to make a point: I could rewrite a piece as many times as I want, perfecting every line, perfectly shaping every last turn of phrase, but unless the material meant something to me, unless there was some passion, it would never cross that line that separates the good from the great. Sure, endless rewrites had made my prose sparkle, but I was writing stupid suspense stuff, when I should?ve been writing about something that mattered. The most recent release from Icelandic siren Bj?rk Gudmundsd?ttir suffers from all the same difficulties as my early attempts at writing. Taking into account nothing but sheer sonics, Vespertine towers mightily above Bj?rk?s previous efforts. Never before have her densely orchestrated arrangements sounded so crisp and breathtaking, her vocals sounded so rich, her programmed beats baffled the mind so. Yet, for the first time in her career, it seems as though Bj?rk is at a loss for something to say. Over the last few years, we?ve seen Bj?rk move farther from the hard-dance backdrops of Debut with each effort. Homogenic saw her programmed beats grow up; more mature and subtle, but hardly boring. Last year?s Selmasongs EP saw her replace beats with found sound percussion; arranged samples of shoes squeaking on a recently glossed wood floor or machinery churning and cranking taking the place of synthesized drums. With Vespertine, Bj?rk returns to good ol?-fashioned electronics, but she?s hardly recycling Homogenic beats. This is current sounding stuff. Vespertine is filled with chopped up clicks, spliced gurgles and sonic farts. Current IDM golden boys Matmos help out on a few tracks, as do a slew of other electronic artists, but it never sounds like this album was pasted together after the fact. Great care has been taken to make Vespertine stand together as a whole. Just like Homogenic, there are string-sections-a-plenty here, but this time they?re accompanied by a slew of harps and an army of music boxes that make for breathtaking backdrops for beats that unravel slowly, twisting and curling, exploring the outer ranges of Bj?rk?s songs. These instruments bring an ethereal quality to songs like ?Frosti? and ?Aurora? that calls to mind fellow Icelandic musicians Mum, imbuing a sort of delicacy to the music. It?s fitting, as Vespertine is probably the most delicate collection of songs Bj?rk has ever released. Yet, the songs collected here lack some of the passion that made equally calm songs like Debut?s ?Like Somebody in Love? or Selmasongs? ?Scatterheart? gripping in spite of their pace. It seems important to note that a weak song from Bj?rk is hardly a bad song. Throw her in that group with Vladmir Nabokov and The Simpsons. Even her lesser work is worth your attention. Still, all the gorgeous production in the world cannot make a halfhearted song into, say, ?Human Behavior.? For all the time and effort that was put into its creation, Vespertine is an album that sinks far too easily into the background. Early on, I learned that all the care and attention in the world would not make my writing worth anyone?s attention unless I was writing about something that mattered. Listening to Vespertine, there isn?t a doubt in my mind that countless hours of work went into assembling the sounds present into something beautiful. Still, Bj?rk?s music has always been imbued with that special ability to grab you by the collar and demand your attention. This is missing on Vespertine. I can only hope that by her next release, Bj?rk will have recaptured the passion, which has always made her music so crucial. David M.
