Derogatory remarks about . . .music forms apply to the music forms that they are remarking about. Applying quotes that were intended for a specific subject onto a different subject just doesn't sit well with this writer. (Although, through-out history propagandist have worked wonders with the above tactic.) Your use of said tactic does not surprise me. Yes, trance and ambient are both forms of music. But, I feel that their differences are significant enough to dissallow such simple logic. (You have the right and responsibility to disagree with my opinion.) As for the (bogus) suggestion that you have a Selected *Trance* Works, I was not merely suggesting the label on your copy was different, rather I was (jokingly) suggesting that you have been listening to a different album comprised of TRANCE works, not an album of AMBIENT works. well i thought that the original quote basically threw out all (or at least most) of trance music because it was three notes repeated. it doesn't seem like he was saying 'bad trance music is overly repetitious', but 'trance music is bad because it is overly repetitious'. in which case, applying his quote to ambient music that has the same 'repetitious' character seems justified. surely he can't be saying that dance music needs to be more complex than 'listening' music, can he? later zach

I asked Rich about his influences for this album, and you can also read it in magazines. SAWII was mostly inspired by a lot of minimalist and avant-classical works which he had listened to the last year or so, these included Cage, Stockhausen, Reich, Riley, and Eno. To quote Rich himself, "Selected Ambient Works II is full of the simplest pieces I could make" As for the trance quote, I cannot find the "3 note" quote. WHat he has said is "Trance came out at this point where there was nothing happening, and then trance just made it even more boring. There's good trance, but only a very small percentage. It's weird, cos its hard to say why one track is good where the others are shit. You could make a great record or a shit record using the same riffs, it's all in the production and the mixing." _______ (__,-, \ / /\ \ f l u i d /,_) \ \ (/ \\ brit@chopin.udel.edu \) flu'id (floo'-)

when someone says that he doesn't like a certain type of music because it is simply '3 notes played over and over', that comment should apply to any music whatsoever, whether it be trance, ambient, classical, or punk rock. your logic just isn't, well, logical! by your logic, a 'new age' artist could say 'trance sucks becuz it's just the same 3 notes', and then turn around and copy what he's talking about note for note, call it 'new age', and then say that his previous comment doesn't apply to his music because it's new age, not trance, yet it's the _exact_ same music. (wow, what a run-on sentence). i think your logic is quite backwards, teep. ___ (:)====/__/\=(:)(:)===========================(:)=====================(:) |\| _\_ \ \|\||=| Tai Nguyen |\| official sponsor of |=| |=| /__/\_\ \=||\| resident wise-ass |=| SoNiC ToNiC(tm) |\| |\| / /\ __/\|(:)===========================(:)=====================(:) |=|/ / /\ \ |=||=| "Nature has been made possible by a grant from |=| |\/__/ \_\/ |\||\| the Corporation for Public Broadcasting." |\| |=\__\/\ \ |=||=| - PBS |=| (:)==\__\/===(:)(:)===================================================(:)

What this thread lacks is the context of the original quote. I believe that Mr. James complained that trance uses the same old boring synth sounds, and then it consists of three notes repeated, which fails to make it any more interesting. C. -- (Chris.Hilker) cspot@netcom.com
