*sigh* That old gag. Anybody heard of YMMV? Nobody gets EPA rated mileage on their car, and if they say they do, they're probably lying. Few people pay attention to mileage on their cars at all. The hybrids just make you do it. The catch is, if you drive like a leadfoot and ignore the fact that the numbers suck, the numbers will continue to suck. That and the EPA testing is done under ideal weather, AC off, and does not reflect real driving conditions. Oh yeah, and then they get the mileage off the TAILPIPE EMISSIONS. Can we please not go in for the whole "oh no, hybrid backlash" meme propagation? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i totally agree... people who buy a vehicle, then complain that they're not getting the mileage stated on the window of the vehicle at the dealership must be morons. there is not ONE company number or yield in any product that is accurate. two examples: 1. when you buy a new fridge, it tells you how much money you'll save on your electrical bill by getting a fridge that uses less electricity. that's total bullshit. they get those numbers by putting the fridge on the lowest setting and never opening the door. which is great, if you never want to go inside your fridge and you live in alaska. 2. copiers. copy/print yields on toner cartridges. if a toner cart says you'll get 10,000 pages out of it, you'll probably get 6,500. how do they get those numbers you ask? it's tests they did by coping one letter sized piece of paper with 5% coverage on the page. that's a small paragraph in the middle of a white piece of paper. average coverage per page used in offices? 28% and remember, they tested the machine when it was new, as the machine ages and the optics get dusty toner yields can drop 20% to 35%. so yeah, if you believe miles per gallon, copies per cartridge, or electricity saved per month, you'll be in for a lot of disappointments. -kiya --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Exactly so. EPA ratings should be used as a basis for comparison, if anything, NOT as an expectation of your actual results. IOW, if a car says it gets 10mpg and another car says it gets 30, then you should expect the second car to get three times the mileage of the first. Another comparison that can be made is SEER ratings on air conditioners. A 12 might be 20% better than a 10, but if the 12 is underneath a cottonwood tree, or if you run at 68 degrees during a 100 degree summer... your bill might not go down.

Ah, the magic of duty cycles. You made me flash back to places of employment that used inkjet for business use. *twitch twitch* --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
