I know that Air is not IDM and whatnot but the new album is *really* good from a musical and electronic standpoint. The analogues are delicious and the album is so concise and on point. Purists might balk but I like good music when I hear it. Counts __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! everything except Biological is good. i wish they'd just leave 6 minutes of silence instead of that song. the chorus sounds off key, and that banjo is horrible. the song Run, though, is the best song of the year so far. give me the shivers. ____________________ jason.clark http://www.krack.org ____________________ On Thu, 12 Feb 2004, John Counts wrote:

That synth chorus in Run is my new favorite sound. It's just incredibly gorgeous. Unfortunately, I don't like the rest of the album much. --- "jason.clark" <jason@krack.org> wrote:

I know that I'm behind on posts, but that chorus sound on "Run" is, indeed, badass. I've heard Brian Eno use something similar on his "Music for Airports" but I have no idea what synth is responsible for it. I also cannot tell if it is some kind of mix between live vocals and a choral pad. Either way, it's the shit and really takes my breath away. If any gearheads have an idea, it would be interesting to hear... Counts __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! i love momements in music like that when its so obvious that they were just loving it in the studio, not worrying about details or implications. makes me happy. John Counts wrote:

I have to second, "Run" is basically the shit as far as this record goes. A lot of the rest of this ablum isn't all that great but Run is quite appealing. "Moon Safari" was kind of the themesong to my 98 Burning Man experience though, so don't listen to a word I say ... Air rules ... and sucks. Which makes them perfect IDM list fodder! KABLAMMO. My friends say they're an incomparable live experience though. dominodigitaldave On Thu, 12 Feb 2004, jason.clark wrote:

I heard that the vocals were a bit... er... 'of an acquired taste'. That put me off exploring rather. Are they 'safe'...? Same happened to me with the Blue States 'Man Mountain' album. Interest was piqued by a previous (instrumental) album then inhibited by reports of vocal disfigurement. alan On Thu, 12 Feb 2004 11:06:55 -0800 (PST) John Counts <polycyclicism@yahoo.com> wrote:

Ha ha! The lyrics are not Mensa quality "deep" and the vocals are breathy Frenchy sexy and fit in perfectly with Air's floaty warmth. All in all this is a comforting, relaxing and lushly floaty album, more coherent than 10 000 Hertz and harking back to Moon Safari days. All in all - packaged with a half-hour DVD of 5 live tracks - this is a gorgeous release. Maybe not "IDM" and certainly a far cry from Venetian Snares, but enjoying lots of repeat plays in my house. Hmmm - 'Frenchy' eh? Well I don't know about that. I liked the vocals on Colder's album - slight Gallic inflections but essentially a distant and less psychotic cousin to Suicide's Alan Vega. I worry about the Charles Aznavour/ Sacha Distel connotations. If I could just think Gainsbourg...

Picking up, somewhat contrarily, on that Non-IDM for IDM-y People strand, I'm catching up on a release from last year - Manual's 'Isares' - which is similarly not "IDM" and a remote wail from VS, and similarly er... can we still say 'ambient' these days without a knowingly arched eyebrow?... and likewise gorgeous. alan ---------------------- Alan Lockett, (Senior Language Co-ordinator, EFL), Language Centre, University of Bristol, 30-32 Tyndall's Park Road, Bristol BS8 1PY, UK Alan.R.Lockett@bristol.ac.uk tel: +44 117 9741311 fax: +44 117 9741377 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
