Subject: [idm] anyone buy the squarepusher digital downloads?
Warp is selling two songs from "Do You Know Squarepusher?" on their
website. It's 1 pound (US$1.55) for both songs, in MP3, MP4 or WMA
formats (you can download all the formats if you want). I wanted to
hear the new songs and haven't heard much Squarepusher recently (haven't
bought much music in years unfortunately) so I figured that wasn't such
a bad price.
The two songs are F-Train and Anstromm Feck 4. F-Train is OK, IMO,
interesting vocals but doesn't hit me real well. Anstromm Feck 4 is
killer, though, I really like it. My favorite Squarepusher songs have
always made me feel like I wasn't twitching quite enough to keep up, and
this song does the same. Really great, I think. I don't have much new
Squarepusher beyond Music is Rotted, so I wasn't quite sure what to
expect. There are a few songs on Music that I enjoyed but never go back
to it again and again like Feed Me Weird Things or Hard Normal Daddy.
Since I've already mentioned what I like, how are Selection Sixteen and
Go Plastic? Those are the two big holes in my Sqpshr collection that I
hope to fill soon.
As far as the digital download thing, not bad.. price maybe is a little
high, especially for two tracks that I'll pay for again later, but I'd
pay about that much for some tracks that I can't buy elsewhere
(unreleased or bonus songs, or whatever.) I'm not going to be buying
preview tracks for every album I want, though, unless they're otherwise
unavailable tracks or wildly cheaper than CD/vinyl/etc. For now,
though, I'll put my money where my mouth is and support digital music
for the labels that try, and the price was reasonable enough.. I've paid
more for CD singles which sometimes don't have more than 2 tracks
anyway, so it's OK in that respect.
Quality (on the MP3s at least) was good, I think the site said 192k/s
VBR, it seems to hover around 220k/s for most of the song and sounds
fine to me.
Anyone else have comments about the songs or the digital download
execution?
James
