This new Metamatics album has rekindled my faith in Mr. Norris. As good if not better than the utterly underrated Neo Ouija album that came out unnoticed a few years back. Nice use of vocals. A bit more "clickity" too. Byeway (Clan) is my favorite track on the album thus far... The Curd Duca albums pretty much all use that "effect" and the 3 album series are called elevator 1-3, and I'd very highly recommend! The ultimate and defining track to be composed of just rhythmic speaking still remains largely unknown by Paul Lansky. His track "Idle Chatter" makes Autechre look like rubes- especially since it was composed in the 80's. My man Howard Shih wrote an article about him in the last grooves. Hearing Lansky's music makes you reconsider how "new" all this stuff is!!!

I'm glad somebody brought Dr. Lansky up. http://www.music.princeton.edu/~paul/ Actually, he has numerous "idle chatter" tracks out, and they are all very, very well done. hi, if you can track it down, get an album by a guy named nuno canavarro called 'plux quba.' came out way back in 88 or so, and flew under most people's radar at that point. way before it's time, it has a lot of treated vocals. it's a very strange work, but it seems to me an obvious precursor to all this glitchy laptop business. supposedly the prefuse track 'nuno' is named for him. it was rereleased on jim o'rourke's moikai label in 99, so you should still be able to find it on vinyl or cd with a little digging. well worth checking out for anyone interested in the roots/history behind idm and glitch. -alex

808 State've definitely sampled 'Mea Culpa' and another faster track from about half way into the album, which I can't remember off hand. The sample in 'Leo Leo' is of the fast talking guy from 'Mea Culpa' saying something like "I'm sorry I committed an offense" and so on. The other sample I'm thinking of is a conga loop from the start of a tune on 'My Life In the Bush of Ghosts', which 808 State sampled for a track on 'Gorgeous'. I can't remember the name of that one, but it really blatantly uses the bassline from Joy Division's 'She's Lost Control'. This is strictly from the trainspotter memory banks, I haven't listened to any of these tracks for maybe 2 or 3 years. There's a beautiful track on Curd Duca's elevator 2 that uses blendered vocals, can't recall the title off hand though. I think there's something similar on Nobukazu Takemura's "scope" too... these are both more "glitchy" though than cleanly re-ordered. I'm not aware of those tracks you reference, but I frequently cut up vocals when remixing other artists' works, often to demonstrate to others how I hear songs, which is usually as phonetic gibberish, and not as actual lyrics. Prefuse 73 do a fairly similar thing.. but with raps, mainly, so if that bothers you, be warned. He's on Warp... Some Slicker tracks also do it.
