Wind Up Bird Chronicle RULES! Murakami is my big "discovery" this year, his fiction is excellent. I just read South of the Boarder, West of the Sun, almost in one sitting actually (it's only 213 pages). Wind Up Bird Chronicle was stunning. Deliberately paced, very evocative. I can still picture what i thought his neighborhood looked like, what the well looked like... I've actually taken to naming my various tracks after his works too. On the max/msp list a few months ago someone was saying that max/msp is just a "lifestyle" that cycling74 is promoting. (rather than just coding in c, or whatever). In a joking reply, one of the cycling74 coders said that, in part, the lifestyle invovled buying Haruki Murakami books in hardback. So, Murakami seems popular among us then. No? I've been digging his stuff since I read The Elephant Vanishes about 5 or 6 years ago. He's great. BUT. What about the other Murakami (not related), Ryu Murakami? What about the other other Murakami, Takashi Murakami? His mushrooms with eyeballs and pointy teethy are freaky, no? Go see the Brooklyn Museum of Art exhibit featuring lots of his stuff if you are in the area! Its rad! -Aaron

Yeah Takashis piece at Site Santa Fe's Biennial was the one redeming part of that show, the rest bit pretty hard. (I would rather enjoy looking at art than have to "get" art.) And I liked The wind up Bird Chronicles and Hard Boiled Wonderland, but I kind of felt the latter was a bit of a blade runner rip-off. Or not rip off but uh, a heavy influence. Er, I'm gonna turn into that guy that never talks about music on this list. I'm listening to that Paul Lansky track and boy does it suck. I like enjoying listening to music not having to "get" music. Like Autechre but 30 years ago and less interesting. Same goes for most of that Peter Green Macbeth score on Rephlex. Although I guess you could mix it with another track that was interesting to create some neat "Atmospherics". Or just play another track that was interesting and skip the "atmospherics". I wholeheartedly recommend "Wind-up Bird Chronicle"... I'm so stoked to hear those two B. Fleischmann tracks. Interestingly, I got turned onto Murakami from Matthew Herbert's website... He lists that book on his reading recommendations. Anyone who digs David Foster Wallace, Pynchon et al should dig "Wind-up Bird Chronicle"... it plays out, in many ways, like a less patently absurd, but more dreamlike and surreal, "Crying of Lot 49"... Murakami's style varies greatly -- I went on to read "Norwegian Wood" and "South of the Border, West of the Sun," both of which are very different. Much more elegaic, "realistic." Also fantastic. Now I'm reading "Hard-boiled Wonderland at the End of the World," which is more like Vollmann's first novel in its sort of twisted sci-fi perversity. Definately with me... Read the Wild Sheep Chase, very odd. Sputnik Sweetheart is excellent too. If you like his stuff try Iain Banks, his blend of surreality and stuff(tm) is similar in feel and just as compelling. Battle Royale got some kind of US distribution in theaters? I have it in some semi-crappy, but still watchable computer format, and it is one of my favorite things this year. Lots of high school kids killing their friends and then confessing that they had crushes on each other as they lay bleeding all over the ground. It fucking rules! On a BR related note, another pleasing Japanese film I loved this summer was Dead or Alive. That was an amazing movie. I was lucky enough to get to see it twice in theaters. Two separate parts of the film, I laughed so hard that I cried. So chances are, if you like Battle Royale, you'll also like Dead or Alive. Great movie. -Aaron Sorry this has nothing to do with IDM.

Yeah, the record is Zealtronic Aubergine by B.Fleischmann. The tracks are: A1 - Toru Okada B1 - In the Well "Toru Okada" is the main character from "The Wind-up bird Chronicle" who spends a large amount of time "in the well". It almost makes sense if you read it... Its probably my favourite book ever, in equal amounts sad, beautiful, sexy, intriguing and confounding. Track 1 is quite nice ambient guitar/electronica fusion based stuff, somewhat like some of the TelefonTelAviv stuff, but with more harsh fuzz. It finally descends into overdrive snow at the end. Track 2 is much more electronic sounds similar to some early bluff limbo µ-ziq, electronic tweaking but slow and comfortable, again uber-distortion. there are two longer releases by b.fleischman currently available.
